Great family fun, but not for serious skating! We’ve skated at lots of places around the Bay Area, including the outdoor holiday rinks at the Embarcadero in SF, and downtown Walnut Creek, and this rink is typical of the temporary rinks set up for the holidays. The Contra Costa Times published an article back in November claiming this one would be 14,000 square feet, so I was looking forward to some real skating, but when we got there, it was more like 5,000 square feet. Nothing like hockey rinks, which are 17 – 20,000 square feet. And I thought the affiliation with the Sharks would somehow raise the bar on ice quality, but the part that was shaded was rough and full of ground-up ice, and the part that was in the sun had puddles of water. But the employees were friendly, they even gave us a break on the fee, charging us the Pleasanton resident fee, because San Ramon isn’t that far from Pleasanton. And it’s nice, wholesome family fun. It’s similar to the experience we’ve had in Walnut Creek, but less crowded and less expensive. For real skating, go to Dublin Iceland or the Oakland Ice Center.
