I needed alterations done on three pairs of pants. I had been putting this off for a long time because I had less than positive experiences at other alteration places in the past. Someone happened to mention to me that they heard great things about Earl, «The Sewing Man», at A Step Above. The store is located in my neighborhood, so I thought I would check it out. Earl was so nice & very helpful. He asked great questions about my alterations so that he knew exactly what my expectations were. He was also very clear about what he could do & what the finished alterations would look like. This was very helpful because I was asking for the waist to be taken in on two pairs of jeans; I knew in advance that the seams would not be invisible. I was okay with that. On the jeans that required hemming, he asked if I wanted matching white & gold stitching, or navy to match the color of the jeans. Navy was fine with me. He asked important questions, like, «are these the shoes you will be wearing with these pants?». That might seem like a no-​brainer, but no other tailor had asked me that in the past. I was very impressed with the cost of the alterations. Additionally, I was told that the pants would be ready in 3 – 5 business days, but they were actually done much sooner. The finished products were perfect! The hems were the right length & the waists were accurate. I am very pleased with The Sewing Man and I will be back again soon!

One of Portland’s gems! This place has the goods for men that you just can’t find anywhere else in town. Shoes… suits…shirts…hats…belts. If they don’t have it, order from great catalogs. It is a one-​stop-​shop. They have a great designer/​tailor (The SewingMan) available to men and women. This store is great!!!

This place has a great selection of stylish hats at good prices. The in house tailor is top notch at will take on ambitious projects. It’s a boutique– and unlike most boutiques the prices are affordable. Go here!
