Alberta Park

This is a super nice park. My friend thought it was a bit too small, but for me it’s just the right size! Not too big and not too small. There’s a tennis court, a nice big pavillion with a basketball court (shouldnt those 2 be seperate?). Swings (none for big people really), a street hocky court where hey were playing bike polo, tennis courts and more.
Kids and hipsters in larger groups, families, couples and everything you could want in a park. It was a beautiful April day and the place was a hoppin’! But you could still always find a place for a talk, a bowl, or a little privacy. Looking forward to hanging here again!

Some of the previous reviews for this park are outdated and incorrect now. I went today and found several great play equipment options, including slides, swings, climbing structures, & a merry go round. And all appear to be in great working condition. Some of it even appears to be quite new. This park has a large open space with lots of trees and grass. I imagine it would be a perfect place for the kids (and our dogs) to play on a hot summer day. It also has a huge covered basketball court with 6 hoops. I wish I lived closer!

Not sure what’s with all the below average reviews. This park is fantastic. Big beautiful trees, not overcrowded and clean. Portland, don’t take what you have for granted. The rest of America doesn’t have beautiful parks every 15 blocks like you do. I moved here from the shit hole that is NYC and you’d never see a neighborhood park like this there. Stop and smell the roses. This is a nice park. Why all the park snobbery? Try visiting a 3^rd world country occasionally.

Big dog park that’s not fenced in. Tennis courts for tennis and tennis courts for bike polo or whatever the cool kids call it. Nice bark laden running track all the way around the park. Baseball and football fields and covered basketball hoops. Play structures for the brats. I love it!

I dont really do anything but drink in the field here. Maybe I should play a sport. Dodgeball looks fun.

This is one of my favorite parks in Portland. The fact that it’s extremely close to my house helps, of course, but I also like how big it is. It literally takes up an entire city block. There are many trees, basketball courts, tennis courts, and a field for baseball and football. In a word: perfect.

Nice little park that I made home for my morning dog walks. It is large, quite and relatively empty if you go early in the morning. It also has a large, unfenced off leash dog area for my pup to play, so big bonus there.
Truthfully, this park was part of my daily routine mainly because of its close proximity to my old house, and it could easily be replaced by any other park in Portland.

It’s a neighborhood park, not a destination. I go everyday to run or take my dog or both. I can’t imagine life without it. It’s like my car or my kitchen or my computer.
Could it be improved? I guess. but besides new playground equipment, really, how?

Another early morning visit with the camera. Albera park is pretty run down, with little grass beneath the trees, and kind of an opressed air about it.
There was plenty of playground equipment, most of it old-​school and pretty interesting looking. However, it wasn’t quite as photogenic as I might like. There were the usual pieces, swings and slide and jungle gym. There was also a merry-​go-​round, which is a good thing. However, the idea that this is where old equipment goes to die isn’t so far off… it was mismatched and all sort of seemed just plopped about at random around the park.
There didn’t seem to be much else, other than the open space. It was quiet and had a number of dog walkers and joggers come through, but if I was in the area I’d head over to Peninsula park instead.

I agree with Wendy, although I haven’t used the playground equipment…
Why is it called Alberta park when it’s not on Alberta?
You might respond with «Well Trav, it’s in the Alberta arts district».
From what I know, «Alberta arts» is a new name made up by realtors and the Alberta street business association. The hood is Concordia.
Either way, can we get this park a little TLC? (I’m sure the city reads Unilocal on their lunch breaks)
Afterwards, we can talk about a name change :)

Un-​amenities:
*Saddest, most run-​down, squeakiest, rustiest mismatched playground equipment I’ve seen in Portland
*Shaded completely by tall trees — gloomy, gloomy.
*Nightly Alberta Park police cruise. (Maybe this is actually an amenity, but it’s kind of depressing.)
Alberta Park doesn’t have a lot going for it, other than that it’s within walking distance. In the vicinity, Peninsula Park is more attractive and has more and better amenities. Wilshire Park is more kid and dog friendly. I wish I could meet more neighbors here, other than the ones sleeping it off on a bench or the ones hanging out near the playground yelling about f*cking each other up.
One more plus: in the summer, on those two days where it breaks 100 degrees, this place is a cool, shady oasis. It always has some crazy wind tunnel blowing through, which is more appealing in July than in March.

When I first started driving around Portland, I often found myself irritated by how few through streets there are — you can’t drive five blocks around here without running into another PARK or SCHOOL. Jeez. It’s like liveability is way more important than driveability or something! Or maybe it’s a conspiracy to get your lazy ass out of the car and onto your feets or your bike.
Chief advantage of Alberta Park over other nearby Portland parks? Treeees. So many treeeees all clustered together. Also has nice paved and unpaved paths, basketball and tennis courts aaaand a leashless area for doggies. A pretty place for an afternoon stroll or a game.
