All for Paws

Love, love love LOVE this store. The manager is a cat (Mr. Muttons) and he is super friendly and handsome. Lots of Portland made, hand-​stitched, soft leather collars. A few dog rain-​gear, some harnesses, and choice pet-​beds. There’s a table of different locally made treats you can play around with. Highly nutritious, grain-​free dog foods, both in cans and dry. If they’re not carrying your particular brand, just ask Kelly (or whomever is working) and I’m sure she’ll work with you. Fair prices and the staff are always friendly. Plus, Mr. Fancypants is a good catcher to see in action, if you know how to throw.

I went here for the first time when I was up in the Alphabet district. I was there to go to another store and noticed this place across the street and figured I would save myself another stop for dog food.
I walked in, the lady working was busy with another customer or friend (not sure)
SMALLEST selection of pet food, the place looked like they literally opened for business the first time that morning — Empty walls and shelves with only like 5 brands of food. None were my dogs normal brands so I tried to pick a new one. Once I thought I had settled on a bag of food– strictly based on the bag because I had no info about the brands they carried. I tried feeling inside how large the dog food is. The lady at the counter noticed me and said the food is very small pieces and asked what kind of dog I had. I proceeded to tell her I had chihuahuas and its important the food is small chunks. She assured me again they are very small pieces of food, So I bought the tiny bag of dog food for $ 13 – 14 or so. When I get home the pieces of dog food are German Shepard sized NOT chihuahua sized. Huge! One of my dogs has had dental surgery so eating big hard chunks of food is hard for her.
How can you not be informed when there is only like ⁴⁄₅ brands of food? Why would this lady tell me something so false just to get me to buy the bag and make a sale– waste of time and money.

Kelli is great! I just went in to her store today while traveling and had the greatest experience. She has a perfectly curated selection and great prices (even compared to the store down the street) and is well
Blow many others’ prices. Love her and the next time I’m in town I’ll be back!

Great store, knowledgable, friendly staff, and TASTY treats my dog loves! Grab a paper sack and fill it up to your hearts content! Only negative is that the selection of food, toys and misc items is pretty small compared to the other two pet stores I go to in the NW neighborhood. However, All for Paws is a fantastic place to grab the basics, as well as a few specialty things. Plus… you’ve got to appreciate a place where the pets bring their humans to work with them! ;-)

I honestly thought I had scared the ever-​loving out of poor Fancy Pants the border collie when I walked into the store and first saw him. I cooed very loudly at him («WHY HEL-​LOOOO~!») and he made a moaning-​crying sound and ducked behind the cashier’s counter. Boyfriend looked at me like, «wowwwww, woman» and I felt like I had just committed the worst social offense ever.
But Kelly, the owner, was quick to reassure me that, no, I hadn’t scared Fancy — he was upset because he couldn’t find the right toy for us to throw for him. And turns out she was right — he was looking for a specific chew toy that he needed Boyfriend to throw for him across the store. It was adorable. And I felt so much better.
Kelly is very knowledgeable — and not just about the products in her store and about dogs, but about the Portland area as well. When she realized that Boyfriend and I were from out of town and were just visiting, she offered us a local map and gave us advice and tips on where to go and what to look for as well. She is very sweet!
We were thinking about getting a coat for Boyfriend’s little Boston terrier, but ended up walking out of the store empty-​handed. The sweaters were a little pricey at All for Paws, but for a little local store I wouldn’t say they were horribly overpriced. Just more than I necessarily wanted to pay at that exact moment.
All the same, Kelly and Fancy (along with the new shopdog-​in-​training, Scout, I believe his name is) made us feel very welcome!

Cute store! The owner is very nice and friendly. I was able to find a small made in Oregon toy for my 4 lbs chihuahua… very difficult to find something she can actually play with!

There are two pet stores on NW 23^rd. The Hip Hound is a high end pet boutique that carries almost everything imaginable for your well-​heeled canine companion. But, I would rather throw All for Paws a bone and spend my money there. It is a much smaller store with scaled back merchandise. The focus is on food and treats with a small selection of accessories and toys. I always pick up some treats by the scoopful from the assorted bins in the front of the store. The price for those items is less than similar offerings by the Hip Hound. They each have their place and don’t have too much overlap. Well behaved dogs are welcome in the store and ours usually gets lots of attention from the owner.

All for Paws is in a great location. The gal behind the counter was so helpful when I was changing my dog food from a grocery store bought food to one with less fillers (better for your pet). My dog Floyd absolutely loves his new food and loves coming into the store sniffing all around. On our nightly walks if we go by he always goes to the door to go in even when it’s closed. Very helpful staff.

I like this store because they have super cute pets that live there. A pet store without pets is not as fun! The dog, Mr. Fancy Pants, is not one for pets but if you are willing to throw his frisbee, you will be his best friend. I don’t know the cat’s name but he’s a sleepy snuggle monster and so soft.
I rarely buy my cats toys because most of the time they won’t play with them if there is something as engaging as a Ziploc bag in the house (or the trash); but I have yet to disappoint my furbabies with a super strong-​smelling, locally-​made catnip soft toy from All for Paws.
I also like this store because they sponsor the First Thursday group runs, and are just generally nice people who love animals.

All for Paws is not your typical run of the mill pet shop. It is a shop that you go to when you care about animal testing and knowing where your product comes from and everything that is in it. Many of the leashes, collars, pet coats, bandana’s, slumber bags, etc are made locally which I love being as I am a local designer myself. I used to buy my animals food at another nameless pet shop for years. I happened to be at Let it Bead taking a class next door and was out of food so I popped by to grab a bag because it was easy. They did not carry Innova which shocked me as it was a common good brand. When I inquired about it I was informed that the brand that I had been so loyal to had actually been bought out by Procter & Gamble who are known for animal testing, they are horrible. I was mortified! I was then educated about every brand of food in the store and given multiple samples to bring home and see what my dogs palates preferred. I could not be more thankful. As luck would have it I stumbled upon a hidden gem and no longer blindly support cruelty. Support your local community, know what you buy.

Zoey and I continue to frequent AFP a couple of times a week. Fancy Pants is as endearing as ever. Kelli has become one of Zoey’s Very Favorite People. My pup always gets a treat and it’s obvious that these treats taste better from Kelli’s hand than from mine.
The reason for this update, though, is bully sticks. For the less informed, these are dried bull penises. My dog (all dogs?) LOVES them. Problem is, most of them STINK to high heaven! Even some I’ve purchased from another, high-​end, independent pet supply store in the area, billed as «free-​range» and «odor-​free» have nearly driven me out of the house once she starts chewing. Mind you, Zoey does not seem to mind. But I do. The BS’s I’ve been getting from AFP have been the least offensive (odor-​wise) I’ve found. Recently (read: today) Kelli got in a new line of BS’s. Bought a couple today. Zoey’s in seventh heaven. After she’d been chewing for a couple of hours, I picked the BS up and sniffed. Couldn’t believe my nose! No unpleasant odor at all! In fact, it smelled quite… enticing. I resisted the temptation to do more than sniff. I’ve gone through 60 years without — well, you know — so I thought I should keep my record pristine. Suffice to say, I have a happy puppy and a happy household (nose-​wise). If you (or your furry friend) are at all into bull penises, do yourself a favor and give Kelli a visit. Tell her Stanley (and Zoey) sent you.

This is the ONLY place to go for all your pet’s needs! My 14 year old Persian cat requires high quality, natural food for his particular digestive system and the owner of the shop «Kelli» knew exactly what food would be best for his special needs. My vet was delighted at how healthy my cat was after adjusting to his new food.
The cat toys are fantastic! From furry mice that make great noises to balls and feathers to chase… and of course the leopard print cozy bed that he sleeps in every night!!! I will say that his most favorite item is the all natural cat nip spray that I use on toys he has forgotten about.
To top it off, the shop dog «Fancy Pants» is a delightful Border Collie who gives amazing customer service… especially if you throw one of his favorite toys for him. The entire experience of the store is first class. Look no further for all your furry friends needs!!!

I was so excited the day we happened upon All for Paws. FINALLY! A pet store closer to home than Lexie Dog in the Pearl (and more reasonable prices!). When entering the small shop on 23^rd, me and my whippet Jack were greeted by Mr. Fancy Pants… the store dog (not the owner, thank goodness) who is super sweet and friendly. Jack and I were both happy to meet him. The selection of dog food is great with many different brands of locally made and all natural dog food… no sketchy food made in China here!
All for Paws is also super close to Wallace park and therefor is a great stop for any hungry (or thirsty) dog after racing around the dog park. Overall 5 stars rating from me and 5 paws from Jack.
