The Hip Hound

Love this local store for my pup. They have great products and many variety of things. Kiko and the staff are amazing in helping answer questions and concerns! I always like to support local neighborhood stores like this one. They host many events, including adoption events in partnership with rescue shelters. This is one of my favs! Thx Hip Hound.

If I had a dog and lived in Portland I’d so be here all the time. This is a mecca for pet parents and their «children» alike.
My friends needed to get their oh so wonderful Beagle «child» Dash his special food which upon analyzing it further, he eats better than me! In all fairness the Dashing Dash has digestive issues and this food (real meat and none of that artificial chemically stuff y’all) fits the bill.
You can find other wares like toys and you can even dress your dog to the K-​Nines (see what I did there?)! A good place all around!

I absolutely love this shop! I bought my dog a fleece her for the winter, and it fit her like a glove. They had a variety of colors and I was happy with the purple plaid one I got her. I can easily throw it in the washer and dryer when need be and it kept her cozy and warm. I’ve washed it so many times and it’s never fallen apart, I know that I got what I paid for and I’m so happy I got it. I’m moving back to Chicago soon and am hoping to stock up on some more before I leave.

Updating my review, since the last time I wrote it was 2011. I’ve been coming in here since then and I must say the atmosphere have changed.
The store itself is still great. Lots of selection, on everything dog and cat. Bags, dog beds, clothes, carriers, toys, treats, dog and cat key chains, different kinds of leashes, harnesses, dog and cat food, even socks and shirt for people. Also, lots of sales.
What I miss the most are the greyhounds. There used to be two greyhounds in here with a very nice young lady, that used to work here. She’s not here anymore, and I don’t know why, but the atmosphere has definitely changed.
There’s an older, blonde lady that is almost always here. She has that air of «I’m the owner of this store», with her head held high. I don’t actually know if that’s true or not. I don’t know what it is about her but when she’s here, it makes me want to leave. Her aura makes me feel like I’m not welcome here.
That’s my own personal feeling though. And it’s just unfortunate.
But if you are on 23^rd Ave, definitely take a peek. You will find something you like.

I came here after going to another store that had fairly snooty and unhelpful staff. The staff at Hip Hound are incredibly nice and helpful. They had a large selection of merchandise and staff gladly assisted me in finding the right size harness and collar for my dog. They were also very good interacting with him, which is a big plus. Plus, the quality and prices were great. I had expected to pay a lot more given the trendy location but that was not the case at all. I definitely will be going back and recommending this store to all the dog owners I know in Portland.

We absolutely love this place and so does our pup! They are extremely helpful and fun, not to mention knowledgeable about their products. They even have good coffee.

I wish I lived in Portland just so I could bring my bully, Bruce Wayne, into this store more often. The staff all fawned over him and I’m pretty sure he’s never received so many cute-​girl cuddles in his entire life before… One woman in particular, I wish I caught her name, went above and beyond to give me advice about helping his dermatitis condition (Apple Cider Vinegar baths, who knew?), continually dirty ears, food allergies, and suggested local blogs I should follow for advice. She even shared pictures of her rescued pittie and we’re pretty certain that she would make the cutest doggy couple with Bruce.

This would be more fun if I owned a pet. It seems like a pretty fun pet store to go to. I just grabbed coffee and water here because it was pretty open and not busy. I would stop in again for a latte. They had a really big fluffy amazing dog there. Pretty fun.

Very nice pet store. Had adorable crocheted toys for dogs.

Have shopped almost exclusively here for my dog’s food/​treats, and they have a nice selection of collars/​harnesses (particularly the wonder walker harness). I like that they have a punch card system, where after you buy 12 bags of food the 13^th is free. We purchase Orijen from them, but I know they have lots of other selections. I always appreciate when they help me out to my car with the large bag of food (while i’m juggling my dog/​bag of treats etc).
Only hesitation for giving them a 5^th star is that a lot of their accessories/​toys are super expensive. I did purchase two gorgeous food/​water bowls from them, but other than that the markup on some of these things is too much to justify a purchase.
Would (and do!) recommend!

My boyfriend and I were road-​tripping from San Diego, so we needed some warmer clothes by the time we got to Portland… And our dog needed insulated threads, too!
We stopped into this shop and got a large-​dog sized reversible cloak for our pit bull/​English bulldog mix. Before he had the cloak, he had actually been shaking because of how cold he was! For the rest of our trip, he was never freezing and shaking like that again.
The shop seems upscale and well-​stocked with quality products. The employees greet you when you come in and are helpful and friendly throughout your visit.
We didn’t get drinks from their café, but they sell coffee drinks for humans and a variety of fresh bakery items for dogs.

love this place! they have great dog food selections, and really cute products. It took all my energy to NOT buy this really cute sockpuppet-​like sweater. It was not that expensive either, for being in the alphabet district. I hope to come back and buy some cute dog clothes or other cool and unique dog toys!

Caveat Emptor! (Let the buyer beware!) I truly dislike writing «bad» reviews and luckily thanks to review sites like Unilocal I can usually avoid bad experiences.
The good about this store is they have a large quantity of high quality food and chews for dogs. They also seemed to have a good selection of toys. They have nice staff.
Sadly, that is where the good ends. Last weekend was one those amazing spring days in Portland. I took a friend’s dog for a walk on NW 23^rd. He had a blast. He got lots of attention which he loves. I was smiling and laughing at him because he kept wanting to go into the stores, I guess he is not a window shopper like me. We finally reached a store he could go into, The Hip Hound.

The young hipster who was near the entrance as we walked in was friendly and welcomed us. We wandered around and I was super happy to see that they carry a few line of dog toys that are rated for durability. My friend’s dog is quite strong and I know not to get him toys that are not durable. We looked through the toys for a few minutes, he was being of no help whatsoever because the only toy he kept returning to was a lot more expensive than most of the others. I approached the counter for some assistance, there were two staff, both behind the counter. I explained that I wanted to select one of the durable toys and would like to spend about $ 30. I had found the $ 40 plus options as well as the $ 15 options and was curious if there were any that I was missing. She took me over to the rack where I had just been perusing and showed me one of the ones I had just been looking at that was $ 15, she then waved her hand towards the rest of the store and said that there might be some more, then she turned and walked away. I continued my search. Eventually I selected a toy that was similar to one that I knew he liked. I was kinda sad that I hadn’t found something closer to my goal but it was sunny outside so I wanted us to get out of there and over to the park. This toy ended up ringing up at $ 12.
My dog friend and I headed over to the park where we met up with another dog friend. He had brought a toy too. My human pal and I took random turns throwing our toys for the canines to capture. After about 30 minutes the new toy was thrown and retrieved once again, only this time it had a pretty big hole in it upon return. I thought to myself, no big deal, it might be defective. I immediately picked up the pieces of the toy that were no longer attached and placed everything into a bag. I returned to the store a few days later and met the store hound, a lovely large fellow, I believe his name was Bentley. The woman at the counter struck me as the owner, she had that aura of «this is my place and I’m proud of it, glad you think it is pretty nifty too.»
After she wrapped up a sale I approached the counter to explain that I had brought in a dog over the weekend and we had shopped for a toy, the toy had broken within 30 minutes of use. She was quite kind and explained that she could give me a discount off another toy (translation: give me more money) and she pointed out that toys break. I know toys break, but $ 12 for 30 minutes seemed outside the norm of reasonable expectations. I asked her if she was the owner, and she confirmed. With that knowledge I suggested that a sign might be helpful and that I had specifically requested assistance in selecting a toy, that the dog was present at the time, plus I had requested a durable toy. She responded that I could contact the manufacturer but she had no recourse. I thanked her for her time, once again suggested that signs might be appropriate and that her staff, although very, very nice were not helpful. The entire conversation was calm and non-​adversarial.
As a former business owner and manager of both large and small retail businesses, my first concern is repeat business and helpful service. The owner of The Hip Hound runs her business differently. This is not necessarily a bad thing. It’s just not a good thing for me or people like me. I will end this review the same way I began. Caveat Emptor!

My favorite little boutique! I bring my puppy, KJ, in sometimes to choose a new toy or pick up some food. The staff fawn over him and other pups in the store, they’re always super helpful when it comes to choosing products and I really like the selection of foods /​treats /​toys.
The above and beyond for me is in the events they throw, «yappy hours,» for pet owners. Also, when KJ was just a few months old, I brought him in and they gave me a whole bag of puppy samples, so we could figure out what works best for him. I’ve been loyal ever since!

A really cool pet store in the trendy 23^rd street neighborhood. The supplies range from collars to food to everything between. The staff is very friendly and helpful and can help with recommendations or things like harness fittings. Be on the lookout for other, less friendly pooches though as controlling dogs in the right store can be tricky.

There’s so much going on in this store that I was a little overwhelmed.
There’s a wider variety in terms of selection here than compared to All for Paws, but the pricing didn’t seem too different to me. There just happened to be a lot more of everything. Staff never spoke to Boyfriend or I at all — no greeting, no asking us if we found everything okay, no «have a good day» or «thank you» as we left. Not a very personable lot if you ask me. Good thing the store is for pets and not people, I guess?

I don’t have dog. I have a cat.
What the hell am I doing here?
Like most boutique pet supply stores in town, their cat section is pretty small compared to the dog section. But, not as small or as dull as other pet shops in town. It’s actually a decent little cat section.
I can always count on finding unique, awesome stuff for my kitty and any other kitties I might want to spoil (um, all of the kitties!!!).

You’ll feel like you died and went to high-​end doggy heaven. The Hip Hound is nestled right in the centre of 23^rd’s busy section and replaced Ziva Hair Salon. Because of that, it retains this fresh, open air feel while still being filled to the brim with as many dog accessories as you can handle.
It might feel like an overload walking in, but I think they do a good job with keeping the inventory organized and uncluttered. I went in on my own, but couldn’t imagine bringing in my «hip hound» — with all the toys, smells, and edibles I think he’d be wayyy overstimulated.
I should note that i’s a little pricey, but nothing is too good for your fluffy little snookums, right?

Did you know the Hip Hound ain’t just for pups? If you have feline companions, you may enjoy their adorable and extensive kitty selection. We got our kitten her Christmas toys and treats here. She loves their squeaky cat-​nip filled mice and birds. Also their wet food is a nice treat for her and healthy to boot.
We definitely see a puppy in our future, and apparently you can adopt one here on the first Saturday of every month. Oh man, and the cute puppy bakery is enough to make you wish you had a dog by your side.
I’ll be returning many a time, Hip Hound!
