I usually just have my buddy Tims wife cut my hair for a six pack of coors since she does an okay job, but one week she hurt her wrist at the ladies bowling league and couldn’t cut my hair so I went to Bens. Nice guy and he does a great job, reminds me of the old barber in Saco I used to go to back in the early 70s. I hope Carol starts bowling more so I can come back to Bens. Best barber I’ve been to in my 60+ years. William B.

Ben’s is right by my work, so it’s very convenient for me to hop over there and get a cut. It’s a one-chair shop, and Ben owns it and is the sole barber. It’s got a nice old-timey feel to it(brick and leather), but not in a forced way. His hours and days he works are somewhat erratic, and as a rule it’s best to call ahead and see if he’s there. This can be seen as a flaw, but I respect it, and apparently it works for him because he’s been there for a while. Ben likes to have the radio tuned into rock stations and often sing along and chats with you as he cuts your hair. He’s easy-going and nice to talk to. The quality of his haircuts is great. I get my hair cut very short, but I’ve seen him do all sorts of men’s cuts while I’ve been waiting. He doesn’t have the attention to detail that some barbers do, and I’m not sure if he does straight razor work or shaves and such, but the upside of that is that he’s pretty quick. Besides everything else, it’s just one of those places that I’m glad is there. A little one-man shop right in the heart of Old Port.

Good barber, reasonable price. Problem is that Ben doesn’t appreciate his most loyal patrons and can tell you he’s closing early as you show up. His hours seem to change all the time when he is not open at all for days, I can’t remember how many times I have been there and found it closed. I’ve been going elsewhere.

Ben is a great barber, gives good haircuts at a reasonable price. Unfortunately his inability to stick to his hours is a real problem. Knowing his tendency to be closed even when his sign says he will be open, I called one day to double-check for the next morning. He told me in person he would be there at 9. To be safe I went in at 9:30 and the place was closed. I’m all for supporting independent businesses, but you have to respect your customers. If you need a haircut and see his OPEN sign out, pop in. But don’t make him your barber that you plan on.

Good music indeed.(I second comment by another reviewer.) And a good cut. Not amazing, but decent. I’m still on the hunt for«my» Portland barber…

I am a big fan of Ben’s. Quick and priced right hair cuts… only wish is that he would stay open when his sign says that he’s open…

Got a great cut there once. Tiny little room with a traditional barber shop atmosphere. Ben’s very friendly and professional. Went there earlier today for a cut however to find he had closed a solid 2 hours before the listed closing time of 3pm, which was a huge bummer! I believe businesses should stick to their hours regardless of the weather or other factors.

Ben gives a very good haircut, does it quickly, and he’s got good music playing. What more could you want?
