Yes, it’s closed. But the day before it closed I had an amazing cup of hot cocoa. Here’s hoping that something moves in there that’s just as good, because I was looking forward to a place near home where I could warm my bones and get a nice cup of coffee or cocoa.

Tried again. No service. Coffee, one choice and it is just ridiculously awful. Tried to talk to peeps behind counter(there were 4, but they were all busy talking…) explained I go over to Noah’s Bagels two doors down because they’ve got 5 coffees out there and always something good. Autogrill peeps had nothing to say. I’ve tried 6 times, now. Between the food servings being appropriate for a Sparrow and the simply atrocious coffee, this place will die a much quicker death than their restaurant did. By-the way, that«panini» in the picture on this page? It’s 2 ¾″ in diameter. Best to eat before you come in…

This place has gone downhill since my original review. They are constantly«out» of menu items, the beers in the fridge are now sparse and infrequently restocked, the tables/floors are often covered in crumbs and used plates, and they are now using the location for storage or something since Alba Osteria closed! Upstairs there is a random broken-looking stereo system and a pile of crap haphazardly covered by a screen. I’m really disappointed this place has gone down in quality. No one seems to take pride in their drinks/food except for Joe and Brent. I’m just waiting for the closed indefinitely sign to pop up one of these days. Oh — and what happened to the pickled items that used to come with the sandwiches?!

We’ve been to Caffe Autogrill a handful of times-it’s a nice little spot, and near our house. Loved it for post-run weekend breakfasts(The promise of a Nutella Pannini and a cup of Stumptown can get my husband out of bed and lacing up his shoes far better than any other bribe I’ve found) We went there for dinner recently and loved it-amazing sandwiches, friendly staff, good times. Great prices on beer and wine as well. They’re also selling handmade pasta, which seems to be pretty popular. My complaints: Hours aren’t on their website(I think winter hours are until 6?), they’ve been out of little things from time to time, and on our last visit a good chunk of the wine was lacking prices(it was stock moved over from Alba, so I can understand, but still a small annoyance…)

This is my local coffee shop and I love it. Everyone there is very friendly and most of the time my dog gets his own treat. I love the outdoor seating and the big open garage door so it will be interesting to see how it works during the cold rainy winter. I’ve only eaten here once, but it was the olive and tomato sandwich. It was petite but perfect. And the seeded cornettis(sp?) made by Baker and Spice are great too. You should go here. It’s a great neighborhood coffee place. They make a mean iced Americano.

I’ve been twice to Caffe Autogrill, and though I had mixed results from ick to yum — I have high hopes that they will improve to a four or five star café. The first visit was strange. It was a breakfast visit, and the selection was sparse and the service slow and awkward. The coffee drinks were fair, and the small slices of quiche were reasonably priced and looked lovely. Unfortunately the quiche was served very cold, and our quick visit did not allow for a return to the counter and a reheat. We were out the door with hopes for more next time. The second visit was this week for a lunch stop. The prices, again, very reasonable, but the sandwiches are small. I first tried ½ of the tuna sandwich: flavor was decent, but the texture of the tuna filling was very strange: mashed, mushy, and not appealing. I am unsure if this was due to low quality of fish, or a blending technique that squished all texture out of the meat. My lunch mate and I agreed the mush tuna had a high“ick” factor. A half of the olive and tomato, crustless«Tramezzini» fared better. A piquant olive tapanade paired with a bit of greens and almost impossibly thin slices of a delicious Italian cheese produced an audible, mmmm from me as I devoured the tiny half. I actually had a hard time finding tomato, but I don’t think more tomato would have added, but rather would have detracted from the balance of taste and texture in the sandwich. Still this was supposed to be crustless? Those were definitely four sides of white bread crust on that sandwich, so that was a disappointment. I also left hungry after sharing two sandwiches and a brownie with my lunch-mate, so if you go in starved, plan on adding a side salad. The neighborhood needs more quality small restaurants, so again, have high hopes the so far spotty café will improve.

I still dream of those best tomatoes in the world dripping olive oil

My friend and I kept hearing about Caffe Autogrill so we stopped in for a panini this morning. The staff was very rude — not friendly at all. The ingredients on the sandwich were delicious but the cheese wasn’t melted all of the way. When we entered we received no greeting/or hello. As we were leaving 3 people were staring at us as we bussed our own table. They noticed we were leaving and didn’t give us a thank you or goodbye. We were extremely disappointed. If they want this business to be successful they need friendlier, outgoing staff. They also need to make some changes to their organization. The deli counter in the front was sparse and it seemed very unorganized/a little dingy.

I’ve been twice this week and I’m a fan. I had the spinach panini earlier this week and it was fantastic. Today I had an asparagus quiche($ 3!), my daughter had a cold salami sandwich and her friend had a cold ham sandwich. I had a bite of both. High quality meats, delicious cheeses, excellent bread. Beer in a bottle only, but a nice selection. I’d love to see them get some draughts. A friend was there and she had a gorgeous looking latte. I will be a regular for coffee drinks and an occasional lunch. They did have some pastas for sale to cook at home. Their breakfast pastries and sandwiches look very good. They even have a nutella panini on the menu!

My office is very close to what was the Capitol Coffee House and I’ve seen way too much of the inside politics of that place as it slowly spiraled into a quagmire of less than mediocrity. The new owners are actual business people who know what they’re doing in the restaurant business. They’ve practically gutted the place and really cleaned it up. They’re training their staff properly, so you’re going to get someone who knows how to make a decent cup of coffee make it and the food is great. Beer and wine is in, cash resister is in, credit cards are working, and the menu continues to expand including hot and cold sandwiches, salads and soup. Definitely worth checking out and then checking in on again later to see how they evolve(looking forward to when they figure out how to include Alba’s pasta on the menu)

I went to Caffe Autogrill this past weekend. It is true that the cash register was not operational yet, but I was told that it will be soon. They had a very soft opening I was told by one of the baristas and therefore are still working out their menu and such. I did sample the soup du jour, which was a perfectly balanced minestrone. I also had a mocha, which was made with stumptown beans and a rich housemade chocolate gananche. It was so good I went back for another the following day. I have not tried the sandwiches yet, but they are sourcing all of their products very well and only using high end purveyors of artisanal cheese and cured meats, so I plan to go back soon to try one. They also use local, seasonal, organic vegetables in their soups, salads, and sandwiches. This is a fantastic new addition to the Hillsdale community!

The folks that own Alba Osteria have opened this spot in the former Capitol Coffee House two doors down from their restaurant. I was sad when Capitol closed and I’m glad that Autogrill’s taken its place. They seem to not be at 100% as they don’t have salads or pasta available yet, and their credit card machine’s not operating. However, they do have sandwiches and coffee. I got a panini with two types of salami, a cheese I don’t remember the name of, and pickled onions. Good stuff. They have Stumptown Coffee, Baker & Spice desserts, and plan on selling fresh pasta for home cooking. It’s a good addition to the neighborhood and I’ll have to get a coffee next time.
