As I sit here at the canton I will tell you this. Crab puffs. Amazing. Eggs rolls. Nothing to talk about. The egg flower soup– flavorful. The hot and sour soup– good. The bbq pork– same as most places. However the sweet and sour chicken– bland, lacking that wow factor. The pork chow mein– horrible The pork fried rice– dry, so dry I will not eat another bit. The pork egg foo young– please change your recipe. The Sesame chicken– are you sure you didn’t use pork??? The tea– very good but you’d have to fail at life to fail at tea. Service not bad but not good. I’ve seen better but I’ve also had worse. I would come here again when a Chinese craving hits as bad as my one did today, I’d rather pay for parking in china town for the republic café or house of Louie though if I was looking for amazing, take leftovers home Chinese but tonight when I didn’t want to go far and my need for the red sauce was so bad I could cry this will do. I might come back if the need hits again but other than that I’ll take the drive, pay for parking experience of downtown. Thank you but work on a wow factor with your food. I don’t go out to eat to pay for mediocre food I could make at home.

So it’s cold and windy on January 2nd and I’m trying to stay local and not go far from the house. I live a few blocks from the Jade District on 82nd which has every type of Asian cuisine imaginable. Japanese, Thai, Vietnamese, Chinese… well you get it . Chinese food in this town doesn’t have the best reputation. For one thing, very few places know what egg drop soup is. Canton Grill is no exception. Its close to home and I thought I’d check it out. Canton Grill has been serving it up since 1944 according to the menu and by the framed family and old customer photos, you can tell. It of course has the relief prints of pagodas and cats as well as the other usual things you’d see in a Chinese restaurant. Hot tea was served quickly and I took a look through a large menu which include American fare as well… odd. Canton Grill was hit and miss for me and I’ll list the misses first because they were small. I took a sip of water and it was all soap. Thankfully it was replaced quickly. The steamed pot stickers were large but they were all pasta dough. Disappointing. As for the hits? My server for one. She was on top of everything. The bad water, my requests for my entrée, chopsticks and even bagged up my leftovers at the table and gave me extra rice. I ordered Mongolian Beef(beef with scallions) and in Portland it doesn’t seem to ever come with bamboo shoots. So I asked for them and asked for the food to be spicy. The server informed me later on that the cook loves making spicy food because he so rarely ever gets the request for it. That might be due to the clientele being quite older than me. The beef was great and he actually got the spicy level correct. The only other place in this town that I have ever had spicy done correctly was Red Onion Thai up on NW23rd, and that place was amazing. It was a decent meal and made for great leftovers as Chinese food always does. Its a solid go to place and I can see returning there shortly especially for the service. Enjoy.

Cheap Chinese. Not the best I have but has one of the best egg rolls out there.

Ate lunch here yesterday. This used to be the only Chinese place I would eat. I ordered Low Mein and I will never order it again. 75% spaghetti noodles!!! A few snow peas, and yesterdays left over BBQ pork thrown in for todays dish. Also the Hot & Sour soup tasted like it was made with ketchup… and even looked kind of red. Everything tasted okay but not what I wanted or expected from this place.

I love Canton Grill… You would think after finding a roach crawling across my chopsticks years ago I would not have gone back, but I still do on occasion because the food is that good!

I’ve been looking for a Chinese restaurant closer to my house and this works. The décor is kitchy and the food is good. The salt and pepper tofu was particularly good as were the vegetarian spring rolls. I’ll be back.

Luke warm food on all 3 dishes. Fried shrimp wasn’t crispy, bbq pork seemed old on the combination plate. Canton chow mein came with fat doughy noodles, meats were unmarinated, and the sauce was bland and glutinous. Mongolian beef had a Styrofoam tasting extruded noodle lining the base. Restaurant atmosphere is dark. The only good thing is the food quantity which is very large for the price. I wouldn’t come back here. Lots of Americans like to come here I think it is because the location is good and they don’t have a refined picky taste for high quality chinese food.

Stopped by our favorite late night dinner spot after a night at the Bossanova. Expected to see our favorite waitress Junga(«young A») & found she had retired. «oh no» we all gasped. Then we met Brad. He turned out to be good fun & made our evening. The food of course was wonderful as usual and we look forward to seeing Brad again. You should stop by & meet Brad too. thanks Brad :-)

This place has great potential, but the location is terrible. 82nd is awful! The homeless and hookers walk up and down this area. You can tell it used to be a classy restaurant at one point. It gives the vibe of old Hollywood with the rounded archway and beautiful(though aged) Chinese details. The bar and chairs are outdated and a little cheap. With some work, it could again be a classy joint, instead of the local cheap Chinese takeout place. The food is pretty good, a nice comfort meal. Cheap drinks. I hear good things about the karaōke.

This is a really fun and cheap place to get drunk. The karaōke has been more than serviceable the couple times I went, and the food is surprisingly not vomit-inducing(the egg foo young is borderline legit). The drinks are also…$ 3? Come expecting a blue collar crowd that’s up for a party.

I went here after an article recommended I try it out as one of the«old Portland restaurants». Our appetizers were good — loved the crab puffs and like the egg rolls. The egg rolls are huge and a bit mushy on the inside but they were quite delicious(super crispy wrapper, love that). My dinner wasn’t my favorite. I ordered the pork egg fu yung. When the waitress… or maybe it was a manger noticed I hadn’t eaten all of it, they offered up what they prefer(chicken or oyster egg fu yung) and let me know why they order the other two. The other two are made fresh but the pork is made in batches as it’s more popular. I appreciate the recommendation. However, not sure I’d get either again. I didn’t love the sauce/gravy. It tasted like regular brown gravy, not what I’m used to for egg fu yung. My husband got the General Tso’s Chicken which I really enjoyed and would get again. The service was very friendly and they did offer to make right my dislike of the egg fu yung. I didn’t ask for that and truly appreciate their concern. I would return — this place was good, I will just get something else next time.

No so great. Any Chinese restaurant that also serves mediocre American fare must be avoided at all cost. The food I ordered was mushy and tasteless. But they have a killer Karaōke bar if you want to hang out on a Friday night for beers and be entertained.

The food was soooo blah — I mean extra blah. The sad thing about this review, is I absolutely adored our waitress and even tipped her more than normal, because she was so attentive and good with our table. One surprise for an establishment right in this area, is the it was very clean and comfortable inside. I thought it might even a little run down, but not at all

I only come here whenever my boyfriend is in SE and he’s craving for something easy and Chinese. I’ve always recommended other favorable spots(that’s just me), but he always coming back for more. I actually don’t blame him. It’s a pretty good Chinese-American joint. The bar side is fun with black lights to set a fun and jivey mood for some karaōke. The restaurant is very family-oriented with everyone participating in running a successful business. My boyfriend always get some sort of combination plate. Tonight it was #7, a plate of pork fried rice, fried shrimp, and sweet and sour chicken(I think). The portions were plentiful for my 6’5″ boyfriend, so that should be enough for anyone wanting to satisfy their Chinese food craving. They delivered the food quickly after ordering and service was spot on.

I’ve been coming here over 30 years. I haven’t been in as often over the last few years because their quality has really been hit or miss. Sometimes it’s incredible, sometimes it’s… edible.

I guess because I have been going here since I was a child is the reason it gets 5 stars. They have made some upgrades lately but it could still use some sprucing up. Maybe some fresh paint, idk. I always go with the number 7 and I am never upset with the portion size. Food is always hot. The hot tea always makes me happy. Their place mats are always cool. My parents and my grandmother have been coming here for years also. It also does big parties if you need a place. Good place to grab some americanized Chinese Food. Also does take out. Just call in and pick up. Make sure to rub the Buddha’s belly.
