Case Study Coffee

My favorite right now for coffee.
The trend around town is these super bitter, bright beans and I can’t handle that much bitterness. It’s just gross.
But this place pulls espresso that’s not bitter at all. I usually get the seasonal drink specials here — peppermint mocha, the Mexican hot chocolate. Nothing is too sweet, or too bitter. I also like the toasted hazelnut flavor (actually tastes like hazelnuts, and again, doesn’t pull bitter).
Plus wifi, plus bathrooms, plus friendliness.
The only thing I don’t like are the pastries. I like Roman Candle in general, but the pastries seem to taste better at Roman Candle. I had a biscotti at Case Study once that had gone soft and stale. Perhaps some inventory issues.

So far during my trip, I’ve tried Stumptown and Case Study. This place is definitely my favorite of the two. Love the vibe to this place.
They were playing some Kanye and Tupac when I was here.
Highly recommend their hazelnut latte with soy!
Also tried their cappuccino which was super tasty as well.
Only pastry I had was their toasted ham and cheese croissant.
I don’t drink coffee on the daily but if I lived here I would probably stop by every day for a pick me up :)

Delicious hazelnut latte. I loved it. Best hazelnut latte of my life. Creamy and kinda tasted like Ferrero Rocher or a high-​quality Nutella.
I came back the next day to try the bourbon caramel latte since I read such favourable reviews about it but I didn’t like it as much as the hazelnut. I’m really into whiskey, mainly scotch and bourbon, and the flavour just tasted like they used a cheap bourbon. I guess you wouldn’t use the finest bourbon in America to boil down, reduce into a syrup, and put in a milk-​based espresso beverage, but I think if the shining flavour is bourbon maybe there could’ve been a bit more effort in choosing it.
Service is friendly and helpful.
It can get extremely busy here. I went early early morning when it was dark and it was calm and a great atmosphere. Closer to 9:45am on a Friday it was insanely busy and loud. So unbearable I was sad I didn’t try a different café instead. It’s hard to concentrate if you’re trying to work or plan your travels, especially if you sit at the bar where the traffic passes behind you. Also the occasional loud mouth standing beside you and yelling in your ear isn’t fun. It was a high stress situation and I preferred my first visit much more, with the hazelnut latte and sitting at a table. I’m glad I had the first visit otherwise I would have a terrible opinion of this place if the bourbon caramel latte and atmosphere of my second visit were my only opinion.
The ham and cheese croissant was also very good. I like how they warmed it up. In Toronto we need to improve our ham and cheese croissants sold at coffee shops. We shouldn’t just be importing Portland’s beans but also learning a thing or two about savoury croissants.
Overall, I would say this place is great and you should order the hazelnut latte, but you’re better off going super early before everyone wakes up and ruins the experience. Thankfully I’m still in EST so I wake up way before everything opens so this is easy for me while I’m here.

Case Study Coffee is a writer/​student paradise! One of the top cafes on Alberta/​North Portland.
Case Study was one of the first caffeinated watering holes i discovered, upon moving to North Portland, being right down the street from Collage, where H. works. I was initially attracted to the soothing lighting and stylish décor, but came to fall in love with the overall ambiance of the place. They always play good music, lots of classic classy jams like jazz, soul, and funk, sometimes spun straight off of vinyl, making it a great stop for the music lover. The crew is always super pleasant, without a trace of condescending attitude, which is refreshing to find on Alberta.
Case Study also roast their own coffee — a warm, medium-​blend, kind of nutty, a little peat-​y; that Earthy coffee flavor Portland roasters seem to specialize in. Case Study are some of the top when it comes to that particular style, so forget Portland Coffee Co. or Stumptown, and support some real independent business!

Little early for work and sleep deprived from late night assignment — perfect combination to treat myself for a latte! I always get latte and here it’s option of aged bourbon caramel, which I like to get as it isn’t too sweet and hint of liquor adds luxury taste for me. I’ve also had fleur noir vanilla, fleur del sel caramel, and toasted hazelnut. So take your pick on the mood! Coffee cup is plain white with logo stamped on, not as durable as some other coffee shops. I also bring my thermo so I try to be Eco conscious when I can.

This place was great, but the lack of enthusiasm amongst barista/​cashier was a little disappointing! I came one morning with my boyfriend and got the bourbon infused caramel latte. I know I didn’t specify when paying, but I don’t think it’s right to assume that every customers wants the largest size if you don’t ask the customer. So I ended up getting the 16 oz, which I don’t regret, but obviously I felt very full after it! The latte had a great fresh caramel taste and definitely kept me awake for all the fun we had in Portland!
I’d definitely be back here! I see the only downside to this eclectic coffee bars is how expensive it is to get a good latte, but I guess it’s a compromise because of the quality of the coffee!

Drinks: ⁴⁄₅ Pretty good. The only thing that has really made me sit up and take notice is their delicious drinking chocolate, which comes topped with a fat fresh-​roasted marshmallow.
Food: 3.5÷5 A small display case of pastries, bagels, and granola with yogurt. Their pastries are yummy, but there isn’t much if you want something savory or filling.
Interior: ⁵⁄₅ Clean, bright, and rather upper-​scale. Huge windows. Just about the right amount of seating for the constant flow of customers, with a good mix of tables and bar stools. Lots of power outlets.
Staff: 3.5÷5 Nice enough, but usually in too much of a rush to do much more than take your order and set out your drink.

The Case Study coffeehouse is undistinguished. It’s location is great, and its offerings have merit. The high price and high noise level lacks appeal for a place whose name otherwise suggests that students ought to be able to study here.
I’ve been to this place several times. They have good pastries. The coffee I had was good. But, there’s competition which must be taken into account in this plentiful neighborhood. There’s better pastries at those prices throughout wealthy places in the world.
They can do better.

Portland is known for it’s coffee and this place is no exception. Stopped in on a weekday morning and the place was quiet. We wanted to get a cup of coffee to warm up and get on with our day. After seeing the cuteness of the place we decided to stay there and drink our coffee. If I lived here I would definitely come to this place to study and grab a drink.

Okay, top 3. I can’t pick a favorite. Either way, in a city saturated with coffee shops, that’s a pretty high honor. I love their pour-​overs, their house, and their vibe. I also love sitting by the window with a view of the busy street and MAX stop — great for people watching!
Every time I’ve been here the cashier has been friendly, and it seems like a genuine friendliness too rather than some sort of trickled-​down obligation. I haven’t tried any of their pastries yet, the focus here is really about the coffee. Though, I must say, I feel a little tempted to get one every time.
The location is perfect for those of you without a car, too. It’s right off the A loop/​NS stop for the street car, and right across the street from Library/​SW 9^th red/​blue for the MAX.
Ps, last time they were playing Glass Animals on the speakers. Gotta love that

Completely charming coffee shop. Perfect for remote work, and even has a counter top for working too next to the baristas. The hazelnut hemp milk latte is warming my soul; just delicious and creamy.
Fun people watching. Super cozy atmosphere. Wood and golden lights galore. I feel like sitting here w a blanket, snuggled up with my work.

Love this café! Went two days in a row during my short trip to Portland. Was recommended by a friend of a friend and was glad we tried this place out!
This café is an ideal study spot as it has a warm, open feel with all the windows bringing in natural light. It’s not too loud and not too quiet. A perfect balance in my opinion. (Though with my attention span, I would probably just stare out the windows and look at the pretty trees outside lol)
The barista recommended the Toasted Hazelnut Latte and the Aged Bourbon Caramel Latte. He said we had to try the hazelnut because they make their own hazelnut purée. It is amazing! I had a sip and the first thing I said was that it tasted like a Ferrero Rocher. The hazelnut wasn’t too overpowering. Now the aged bourbon caramel… perfect! I had to grab another one the very next morning! The flavor of the bourbon, caramel, and espresso was so well balanced it’s insane. I am totally wishing I had a cup right now.
I highly recommend this place. Staff is very nice, and the environment is very chill. I will most definitely be back.

We stopped in at Case Study Coffee during yesterday’s downpour to get out of the rain and pick up a hot cuppa joe. Love the atmosphere for this shop — very cozy and inviting. Customer service was great and once we decided what we wanted and ordered, our coffee was ready quickly.
I ordered the bourbon caramel latte and holy bourbon, people. There’s a place in DFW that makes a killer bourbon vanilla latte, and it’s super smooth and heavier on the vanilla, using the bourbon as an accent flavor. This bourbon caramel is very heavy on the bourbon, very light on the caramel, so keep that in mind as you order. I look forward to trying to the caramel or vanilla syrup next time. DH had a drip with the caramel syrup and really enjoyed it. He said it was delicious and tasted like a Werther’s original.
Looking forward to coming back and trying out some other drinks!
:UPDATE: Hazelnut is on point. Seriously, I haaate hazelnut, or what people call «hazelnut» flavor in syrups. Usually its that sickeningly sweet faux hazelnut flavor, but not here. Here, hazelnut tastes like an actually freaking toasted hazelnut (genius!), with ground up hazelnuts to boot. Very delicious. The hazelnut and caramel have hands down been our favorite go-​to flavors. Customer service is always great — super friendly staff.

This is my third time at Case Study… Im in love with this place! Such a great cup of coffee. The place is beautiful with bright red wood and tarnished copper fixtures. The vibe is way cool.

Ok definitely my new coffee place! I got the Cluizel drinking chocolate and toasted hazelnut latte and they were both amazingly good. First of all the drinking chocolate comes with a toasted marshmallow on top and honestly who could resist that. I tasted some salt in the drinking chocolate which is good to cut the richness but it’s the best adult hot chocolate you’ll ever drink! So I suggest ordering the toasted hazelnut latte because it will literally change your life. I’m a big fan of hazelnut lattes and believe me when I say this latte tastes exactly like a hazelnut and not that yucky fake syrupy stuff. Presentation is beautiful and the staff is super friendly.

Possibly my favorite coffee shop when I visited Portland. This location has a great space and it’d definitely be a place I would frequent to study if I lived in Portland. The staff is friendly and very helpful to a first-​timer like me.
They do an excellent job with their flavored lattes. I tried the TOASTED HAZELNUT (their most popular) as well as the BOURBON CARAMEL (cause I’m an alchie and I like the taste of bourbon).
First off, that hazelnut is amazing. The don’t use hazelnut syrup or flavoring, rather, they use real hazelnuts for their flavor, and you can definitely tell. That fresh toasted hazlenut taste lingers, leaving a great nutty aftertaste.
Their bourbon caramel is also very delicious. I normally don’t drink lattes, but these two got me hooked. The bourbon caramel is a bit richer in flavor than the toasted hazelnut, but like the hazelnut, the flavor lingers in your mouth after that first sip. Delicious!

Espressos, good. Americanos, good. Regular brewed coffee, good. Lattes, meh. Lemon scone, yuuuuum!
I’ve suddenly become one of those people who love working in coffee shops and what I love about this place is the amount of seating there is. There are a bunch of tables all around the café however very few outlets.
The baristas were friendly & quick to make my order!
Just one complaint– people don’t seem to clean up after themselves here. Both times I’ve been here, I’ve had to bus my own tables. C’mon guys, it’s easy to just toss the dishes in a bucket after you’re done!

This establishment has a large open layout with the baristas located in the middle, bar-​like, so you can cozy right on up and order your poison of choice. Or coffee. That’s what I meant to say…
There are plenty of chairs on the perimeter where students, or workers, can park their laptops and hack away at their computers.
Found a little corner with a small platform. I sure hope that’s for live bands during weekend evenings because that would totally fit.
Ordered their Mocha and their coffee is not burnt and they put enough chocolate in it. In other words, it was great!!!
Also ordered the Cluziel Drinking Chocolate and the speared roasted marshmallow laid across the mug rim was a great touch and just made me love the melted chocolate drink more.
