The owners of Fez are incredibly kind and helpful — they checked in on us throughout the meal to ensure that we were happy with the food(which we were!). Although the menu is a bit confusing because there are a lot of different kinds of foods represented on it, I was more than happy with my Ethiopian injera — it tasted great, wonderfully spongy, and was accompanied with a wonderfully spicy stew of onions, beef and carrots. We shared the Somalian platter, which had hummus, a salad and sambusas — all of which were wonderfully delicious. The mango lassi was delicious — not too sweet with a great consistency. Everything was pretty well-priced(the sandwiches were in the five-dollar range), and my Ethiopian meal was about ten dollars. The platter was maybe five dollars. Definitely check this place out!

Wow, out of the way much? It’s a good thing we were in exploration mode or we would have never come across this gem. I love ethnic food and don’t care much about ambiance, but I will say I was definitely contemplative about eating here after entering through the uninviting, still-under-construction grocery store. Regardless, the good was good. The owner eventually came outside, welcomed us, and gave us a passionate description of his menu. He’s Moroccan and his female business partner is from Somalia. Our eggplant appetizer was delicious, as was my falafel platter. Authentic fare at rock-bottom prices.

I went here tonight after reading many positive reviews about the food here. I was not disappointed! If I’m rating just on the food, this place deserves an easy 5 stars. I ordered a falafel wrap and a side of hummus(neither of which were actually on the menu). The woman was extremely welcoming and as I looked over the menu deciding what to order, she asked what I liked to eat. I told her falafel and hummus and she suggested she make me a falafel wrap and side of hummus. Let me tell you, the falafel was so moist and some of the best I’ve had. The hummus was also freshly made to order with a touch of olive oil and seasoning. The 4 stars is solely on décor and menu. I initially drove by and all the lights were off so I assumed it was closed. I decided to stop anyway and I’m glad I did because the door was unlocked and I was welcomed in. It’s very basic in terms of atmosphere. In my opinion, better for take-out. The menu isn’t very extensive but I appreciate that they’ll make anything you want. Overall, this is one of those hidden gem hole-in-the-wall places that Anthony Bourdain would visit on No Reservations — just because the food is so damn good.

The hubs and I stopped by after looking for a quick food fix… We had driven by a couple times and thought«Hey, they’re new to the hood, let’s give em a shot.» The décor — oof — that’s bad. But the owner told us they are shutting down for a couple weeks soon to renovate and build an outdoor patio. Sweet! We ordered some kufta, which is a ground meat with seasonings. It was different than what I was expecting, but really flavorful and tasty. It was made infinitely more tasty when the owner came out and showed us the freshly used meat grinder(yes, ground as he was making it!) that he was about to wash. Then he showed us the leftover in a bowl and said — «Here’s my dinner!» We also got offered some falafel after being encouraged to try it… I thought we were just going to get a sample but we got a whole plate(which ended up being on the bill… eh, no big deal, but it was a huge portion that i wasn’t planning for, so I was really really really full). This seems like it could be really successful and they are a welcome addition to the hood… and they do take out AND(soon?) delivery! BONUS!

Fez is a great example of a small neighborhood ethnic restaurant that offers authenticity, great food and friendly service. The exuberant proprietor Abraham and his kind wife Hana greet everyone with a smile and the energy of a great friend. On our visit, we enjoyed the complex flavors of the Herrera Soup(kind of a Moroccan minestrone), a massive Mediterranean Salad(with veggies from local farmers markets) and Chicken Sukhar, a colorful combination of vegetables and pulled chicken in a well-spiced sauce. The meal was served with a nice saffron rice, and to top it all off, Abraham brought us samples of their delicious falafels. The total bill was a very reasonable $ 22. It will be fun to watch them grow as the neighborhood learns about this gem.
