Floating World Comics

I only went inside of one retailer in Chinatown and it was here. The staff was welcoming coming in and going out.
They have ample inventory of new mainstream and indie comics, which makes this a cool LCS (local comic shop). I saw the dollar bins in the back too with old back issues at discounts, so there might be diamonds in the rough there, but it could be like finding a needle in a haystack too, but if you have the time to look through the inventory it could be fun and rewarding.
If they relocated to a better area, I’d imagine this place could really thrive, or rather, if the area they’re in, improved this place is representative of the type of good business that should reside in the area, as it’s well kept, organized and nice.

My go to comic shop when there is an indie comic to be read as well as art from local artist. Great customer services even though they are located in chinatown they still make it.

Nice, spacious comic store with a large selection of your standards and plenty of independent ink as well. The staff was talkative and helpful, had the expected knowledge of their chosen warez to help find something new. I’ll probably make this a regular stop for my fix here in PDX — unless I find a better store.

Great service!!! Walked in with 3 boys, 11, 12 & 13. Had exemplary service from Francois. Helped the boys with me find what they were looking for, and pointed out the $ 1 comics. Also very helpful looking for comics for my 8 year old girls. Will be back when I’m on this side of town.
Love to see girls eat customer service and prices alive and well at this business!

My favorite comic book store in the world.

Helpful, knowledgable, friendly staff. Diverse selection, lots of small/​indie/​self made.

A cool comic shop with a good selection of things, most impressive to me being an old guy… They had original Akira trading cards which I didn’t even know existed! The guy working was really nice and overall it’s a good place to check out, maybe go by Lan Su garden while you are in that part of town.

Floating World is a great comic book store. Here in Portland on vacation and noticed a real lack of graphic novels and anything comic book related in Powell’s City of books. While walking back to my hotel I came across this shop and was immediately impressed just by the creative name.
The attendants were very helpful. I had a few questions about what issues certain comics were on and the guy that works there was very helpful and answered every question I had patiently.
The girl that works there was also very attentive and nice, she rang up my copy of «Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #1» and even placed it in a plastic protector for me.
It’s somewhat of a small shop but they had everything I could possibly want and with extremely reasonable prices. Love this place. Highly recommended for comic book fans.

This place has everything! We went here two years ago and got so much Adventure Time stuff! They have a great selection of everything though. Definitely stop by and sift through their gems.

I am a nerd for all things comics. My son is my mini me in this respect. It doesn’t matter where we go. We have to find a good comic book store, we have to find a good bookstore, and we have to find a place to buy Pokemon cards if the first two places for some reason do not have them… I brought my son to explore downtown Portland during the Rose Festival. We started exploring really early in the morning. Stopping first at Voodoo for some doughnut lovin. Then off to explore China Town. We happened upon Floating World Comics because while exploring we noticed a shop with people waiting outside… Not just two people, but about 5 people waiting for this shop to open.
«What are you waiting for?» I ask. «The comic shop to open up…» says one guy as he points up at the sign. Must be good. Must be.
The shop is supposed to open at 11… But here was this group of patrons still waiting at 11:10. The minutes came and went. We all waited, chatting about our favorite comics, heroes, and cartoons. It was probably the best time I have ever had waiting for a store to open. Even though the store took a good 30 minutes to open I wasn’t angry. When we finally did get in the store I’d say the options were pretty typical of a comic store; great selection, knowledgeable staff, clean and well organized shop. My son spent the entirety of our time in this store in one section in the front seemingly designated for his age group. He finally decided on a few Pokemon, Adventure Time, and Ninja Turtle comics. I didn’t get anything for myself this time but I was super impressed with the selection. I particularly considered purchasing The Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Historia… We probably could have spent all day in this shop alone and been perfectly content.

Right after the Chinatown gates. Pretty roomy, with a very good selection of comics, especially for the indy/​graphic novel types, instead of just the usual superhero types.
The guy who greeted us was friendly and helpful.
The only negative was that it felt very very low key in terms of presentation/​decoration. No effort to create a personality or style. Just a bunch of bookcases and stands. Period.

Love this fun and classy store. We went here during our last visit to Portland.
It is clean, well lit with something from the casual shopaholic like me to the avid
cartoon/​manga fan.
I was instantly impressed by the friendly counter guy who made us feel so
welcome.
Son of Rinky was impressed too and found some titles that had been eluding him.
I found some interesting zines and wished I had tons of money so I could have bought tons more.
As mentioned by other Unilocalers, you can find local art, vinyls, knick knacks,
probably paddy whacks too, and many more items.
Definitely a stop for any vacation in Portland.

While visiting Portland, I noticed that this city has a lot of book stores. They have the world’s largest of course but they have small ones too. And it seems like they all make it. This comic book store was pretty cool. I enjoyed browsing the material as it brought me back to my childhood.

There is a pretty decent selection of comics here, as one should hope to find in a comic book shop. I’m not a huge fan of the presentation but I’ve got to admit that it works well to economize space and pack more comics on the floor.
As for selection, I found what I wanted and a few items I didn’t even know I wanted. Then again I tend to go for popular stuff so of course they had it what I was interested in. If I were an aficionado then I might be able to give a better appraisal of the shop but to the causal buyer it was just fine.
I want to mention that the staff was kind and didn’t push sales or bother me in any way. Also from over hearing their conversation, I think they’re also knowledgeable about their wares.

Came across Floating Wold Comics while I was wandering around Portland in search for food. So glad I came across it!
Lots of things to choose from — vinyls, comics, books, art work, figurines, and more! I love that there’s a whole section dedicated to zines and local art (support your local artists!). They put their newest comics in an area where you can easily find them too.
If I hadn’t been on a time crunch, I would have probably just stayed there for hours. I’m sure you can find many interesting things in this place. I’d definitely come back the next time I’m up in Portland!

The best thing about a comic shop is the sense of community it inspires. It feels like home when you walk in, and the chillest people are always willing to talk to you about the books, and they know their stuff, and even thought the shop is perhaps smaller or has less of an inventory than certain competitors, it has thrice the charm and then some.
This is that shop, so good in fact a lot of local or travelling artists and writers of both the mainstream and indie persuasion often stop here for the same reasons, whether they are signing or not. This place got Matt Wagner to come out of his shell! Yeah man, Floating world is the bomb.

Great selection of comic books, super friendly staff and they showcase artists’ work (so you can buy prints and support them!). Great selection of books for the serious book collectors without the burden of sifting through too many of the popular /​trendy things that are a mainstay in other stores that just take up space and nobody actually picks up.
