Grateful Heads Hair & Curls

I’ve been seeing Courtney for a couple years now. We met one fateful day at Bishops after my former girl had quit and I was nervous to try someone new. (I loved Bishops but you get one or two unwanted mullets and lopsided haircuts, you start to get nervous trying someone new.)
From the beginning, and every visit since, she is SO PATIENT. I have short straight hair, so I think I’m a little different from her usual MO of curly hair. She listens well and is meticulous, and really wants to make sure I love my cut. Sometimes she edges on the side of caution (which I appreciate, I may say I’m ready to have my first mohawk, but am I really?), but if I want it shorter or thinned more or more texture even after a normal-​length haircut time, she is always ready to keep that cut going until I’m satisfied.
I wish I could tip her more, she’s wonderful!

I love Courtney! She is amazing with curly hair. She gave me a cut and wash and I left the salon with hair that would have rivaled Shirley Temple’s curls. Besides her magic touch, she’s got a great personality to go along with her talent. She’s down to earth, funny, and has such a kind heart. Her compassion is reflected in her business model that uses a sliding pay scale as well as in her love for her rescue dog. I’ve made her my new PCP, Primary Curl Physician.

Short version: Courtney cut my voluminous mass of 3c (tight, kinky curls) with expert skill and when I left the salon, I wanted to tour Portland, showing off her handiwork — I recommend Courtney with my whole heart. Go to her. Go now.
Long version: It took me a year to find Courtney after I moved to Oregon from Arizona. I’m 35 years old; I have several different hair types (3b/​c/​?) co-​existing on my head reflecting my diverse heritage; and, I have a tremendous amount of hair. By the time I went to see Courtney, I had been growing my hair out for over a year — there was a lot of hair for her to contend with and yet she did so with ease.
I’ve never, ever had such a positive hair experience.
In prior years, after getting a haircut, I’d run to my car and zoom home because I’d never want to be seen by the public.​But with Courtney, I wanted to parade around like a peacock — my hair looked amazing. That has just plum never happened to me before.
I have gone to stylists who claim to know curly hair but really have no clue at cutting anything beyond loose type curl patterns (2b/​c) — for lack of a better phrase «white-​girl curls».
Courtney asked all the right questions to assess my hair goals and explained thoroughly her approach before cutting my hair dry.
She was meticulous. It took two hours total to cut my hair, non-​stop. She was attentive to every single curl pattern on my head.
Then she colored my hair with delicious, caramel-​y highlights.
Then she styled my hair with DevaCurl products.
And now I’m a new woman.
I’m so grateful I found Courtney — I recommend her without hesitation.

I am not even sure how to begin this review — nothing I write here will truly do justice to the amazing work, expert knowledge, care, patience and HELP that Courtney was able to provide upon our very first visit. I have never written a Unilocal review before, this just goes to show how excited I am to have finally found the absolute best curly hair specialist I have ever known. Courtney is newer to Portland, which is honestly the ONLY reason why Unilocal is not flooded with reviews and five star ratings and excitement about her expertise. I promise you this! I have tried stylist after stylist after stylist, even at some of the most highly rated salons here in Portland… So many stylists who claim to know curls honest truly do not even NEARLY compare to what Courtney knows about this hair. Prior to some terrible outcomes at various salons, I did find an amazing stylist, Linsdey, through One Creativity and design, who unfortunately is moving away :(:(. Curly girls– jump on this bandwagon and follow me to Courtney (as much as I will miss and love Lindsey always!!).
