Halo Salon

This salon is in a great location, and is very comfy and cozy inside. More than anything this review is a shout out to Lauren G. I was referred to her by a co-​worker, and am super happy to say I’ve found my Portland stylist! It was super easy to book with her online, and I was so pleased to get in so soon. Lauren is very warm and welcoming and listened to my concerns, and gave great advice. Not only did she give me a killer cut, but she took the time to tell my about my hair and shared a lot of useful info! I’m very happy with my cut Lauren, thanks again!

Got my hair highlighted and cut this afternoon by Sydney. She did an amazing job. I don’t go to salons often so I was fairly nervous. I was specific on what I was looking for and she gave great results. She was very professional and I plan to go back. The salon is adorable, great products, and great location.

I picked this spot since it was near my apartment and Joelle happened to be available but I ended up finding my salon home! Joelle is always punctual, neat and very pleasant but not overbearingly chatty like you sometimes have to experience.
She is patient and is amazing at translating new design ideas. I always leave here feeling like she tended to exactly what I needed without pressure to do or buy anything unnecessary. Perfect.

I love this place. The salon itself is clean, and has a classic look that i like. But more importantly I love Diane. When i first went to her i asked for something a little different. I wanted color that started dark brown and faded through to purple. She nailed it. The color is perfect and so is the cut. I love that the cut she gave me was something I could easily do on my own. I would recommend Diane with confidence. She’s professional without being stuffy, funny, and very talented.

I’m tempted to put 2 stars just because I liked my stylist’s personality a lot, but the final product is truly only worthy of 1 star. Or less.
I received the worst haircut and highlights of my life at this salon. The cut was a LOT shorter than I wanted, and it gave me oddly placed layers that I didn’t ask for. The highlights were oddly placed– all on the top of my head, and didn’t blend in at all with the rest of my hair. I’ve been getting highlights for over 10 years and trust me, this was oddly terrible-​looking. Even worse, I was specifically looking to have the roots touched up from my last highlighting job, and that did not happen at all. When I put my hair in a ponytail, all you could see is untouched, dark roots.
To their credit, the stylist attempted to fix it. The color ended up looking a little bit better, but the cut– oh, the cut. I didn’t want her to come near my head with scissors after I had seen what she did the first go-​round. So, I am just working on growing it out and some day I hope to somehow get rid of these awful layers.

If you are accustomed to a certain quality of skill, and a certain ambiance, maybe skip this place. It all felt well intentioned but the execution was sub par. I was given stripey highlights (hello early 2000s) after asking (and showing several photos) for blonde (basically touch up what I currently had). I’m not sure if she just didn’t know how to do blonde well, or what, but they are some of the worst highlights I’ve maybe ever had (not counting the horrid ones I gave myself in high school). I was really disappointed. The cut was strange and I have continued to find rogue layers coming from odd places ever since. I can see the line where the highlights begin – it’s harsh and abrupt. I decided to try this place on a whim, and will never go back. I don’t want to bash the stylist, because she was super sweet, but I have to say I felt confused by the result. I have easy hair to work with, and my vision was pretty basic. Looking forward to getting my hair done again next time I fly home. Just say no to tiger stripes!

I’ve seen her three times, and every time I get my hair done by her, people compliment me. They say stuff like «Wow, I’m not sure what it is but your hair looks really good today» or «Gosh, your hair looks lighter than usual,» but they don’t realize I’ve gotten a cut and color. So it’s both good-​looking AND subtle :)
Joelle is calm and she knows her stuff. I’m gonna keep going back.

OMG! I read Rika K.‘s review and she was totally right!
I have really thick coarse asian hair. I’m always so frustrated with how frizzy my hair is. I’ve tried every Aveda product and none of it works as well as Bumble and Bumble. (I’m a total convert now.)
I’m the type of person who used to go to Super Cuts or the Aveda Institute because I thought it’s just my hair and I’ll just pay less than $ 20 for a cut. But I always left disappointed. I can’t believe I lived like that! ;)
But the fact that I rarely get my hair cut throughout the year, I figure if I’m going to pay someone to do it, I want someone to do it right. You really do pay for what you get.
So I made an appointment with Diane and it was sooooo nice to have someone know what they’re doing. Then to have the hair come out awesome even after a couple months was the best feeling and such a great investment!
Diane has a ton of experience, she’s been in the biz for a while and really knows what she’s doing. She listened to what I wanted and knew how to get it done!
I can’t recommend her enough!
Oh and also the location is super convenient to get to and the remodeled space is so nice and pretty!

I went back, over six months later; I hadn’t cut my hair since my previous post and it had grown out very well. The second hair cut here was equally amazing! Still so happy with Diane and her scissor skills. Wish I lived in Portland so I could see her more often. Diane was also very accommodating when I was running late. Given my limited time in town, this was a lifesaver. Extra points for flexibility and understanding.

I just had a fabulous cut and color with Laurie Ann at Halo. She is an experienced stylist and a licensed massage therapist so she has great hands. The salon is conveniently located in NE Portland and has an open and relaxing atmosphere. I highly recommend Laurie Ann and Halo.

I hate writing less than favorable reviews. However; when a random stylist tells me that my hair needs fixing and that they are the one who should do it… then gives me a less than good haircut, I feel the need to say something.
I am one of those people who is used to paying $ 20 for a haircut so $ 40 to me is a lot of money. That being said, I expect a much better result for $ 40 than $ 20. Unfortunately, this wasn’t the case.
I have long hair with layers that frame my face. The stylist from Halo (that sold me on coming in to see him) said he could «clean up the mess» the last hairdresser had done. For starters, I thought my hair looked pretty good up until then.
Now, the right side of my face is completely choppy, whereas the left side is longer (virtually untouched by the stylists scissors). I said I wanted the layers smooth, so I can wear it straight. That won’t be happening any time soon.
I now have to wait half a year, for my right side to grow back out, so I can get it cleaned up — by someone else.
I didn’t express my concern or leave the salon unhappy, because I had the stylist cut my hair while it was dry and still had a little wave in it (versus paying to have my already clean hair washed) and couldn’t tell how bad off I was, until I got home and straightened my hair. I’m surprised the stylist didn’t wet my hair with a spray bottle, which could have been part of the problem.
The stylist was actually very personable, but shared a little too much information about their personal life. I didn’t mind, but now feel the story telling distracted them from giving the fabulous haircut they promised.
On the bright side. I still have the length in back and feel the layers he gave me were decently done. I’m just unhappy with how much I paid to be unhappy about my haircut.

Halo gets 2 stars for reasons completely unrelated to hair: their space is gorgeous and full of light, and the stylist was really nice.
As for my hair — I’m panicked by how bad the layers are. I’m rocking a Rachel Green number that makes me want to hack off about 5 – 6 inches of length that I desperately need (due to weight/​curl of my hair). I came to the salon with very nice, subtle layering that I just wanted trimmed up. I specifically said I wanted to keep my hair as long as possible. I left with hair that is embarrassing and difficult to remedy. I’ll sadly be incorporating far more pony tails into my hair styling.
Wish the execution of the cut would have matched the ambiance of the space and friendliness of the stylist. I won’t be back. :(

I recently made my second visit to Halo, and I’m sorry to say I won’t be returning
My first visit was for a cut and color, and I was pretty pleased. The staff was hospitable and offered me a beverage when I arrived, and both the cut and color were to my liking.
My second visit did not go so well. Fifteen minutes before my 4 p.m. appointment, my stylist called me to let me know she was running behind and would be about 15 or 20 minutes late. So I arrived at the salon around 4:15.
When I arrived, another stylist (working on a client) asked if I had an appointment. I said yes and gave her my stylist’s name. She said it would be a moment, so I sat down to wait. I waited until 4:40 — twenty minutes past the latest time my stylist had mentioned, forty minutes past my original appointment time. In that time, the THREE other stylists working at the salon said not one more word to me. No one offered me a beverage, apologized for the wait, explained the delay, or checked in on me.
My stylist called me around 5:15 to apologize and offer me 25% off my next service, which was nice and all, but not enough to get me to come back in this case.
It was unfortunate that the stylist missed our appointment, but these things can happen. What was inexcusable, however, was the three stylists completely ignoring me for the 25 minutes I waited.
I’m giving Halo three stars because I was happy with the work my stylist did on the first visit, and I’m giving her the benefit of the doubt that the missed appointment was an anomaly. That said, I just can’t justify returning after being ignored by three other stylists for 25 minutes.

Whole cut and color seemed rushed. The color turned out ok but I am not a huge fan of the cut I got. oh well

Josh is good. Really good. GUYS complement my hair now. I mean daily, if not more. It really feels good and is the perfect color for my skin tone, etc.
He insisted on a consultation before the appointment, which seemed unnecessary (its not), but I went. He played with my hair awhile, talked about what I like and determined the keratin treatment and color technique we would do. He explained in detail how it all would work.
On the day of the appointment, all went down as planned and I walked out with shiny strawberry blond hair. I’m so glad Groupon led me to him. In addition to the hair skills, he’s also got a great sense of humor. Looking forward to my next appointment with him.

I was in need of a new hair girl and boy did I come to the right place! Christina has done an amazing job listening to what I want and making it happen. I get complements on my hair left and right and I am extremely happy! If you want an amazing experience Christina is the girl to see!

I was looking for a new stylist and happen to see a Groupon for Halo Salon. I was lucky enough to be set up with Josh. He was incredible! I have never had someone take such good care of me, my hair and make me feel so wonderful and beautiful. I have very difficult hair so I was scared to go to someone new but, after seeing Josh I am SOLD for life! He used techniques I had never seen before that made my hair look vibrant, natural and healthy. I can’t wait to go back and see him! Thank you, Josh!

A friend of mine always had the best hair cut & color, finally she told me about Josh at Halo. He does the best color, bar none, that I have ever had! In addition to his amazing skills he is great at making you feel like you are an old friend with in minutes of meeting him.
Really, if you want a great cut, color or blow out, you need to see Josh!

Where do I begin? let’s see… about 4 yrs ago a friend of mine told me to go to Halo Salon and check out this lady name Diane. she happens to be the owner and the most amazing hairstylist I’ve ever known! n trust me I know a lot! I have been to soo many salons and gotten soo many bad haircuts that I was about to give up! but the moment I got to halo. this nice friendly lady sat me down n listened to what I wanted! It is soo hard to actually get a hairstylist who listened to what you want. so I watched her like a hawk when she was cutting my hair… to see if she was gonna mess it up or not.
then the most magical thing happened… she didn’t mess it up! instead she gave me the most gorgeous haircut with all the layers n pieces falling into place nicely and bangs that flatters my face including a thin honey colored highlights that warms up my complexion! I was stunned beyond words… I was soo happy to have found my hairstylist for life! and what’s even more great is that my haircut grew out nicely without me going back to the salon until 4 – 5 months later! now that is a talented hairstylist!
so ladies if you have thick coarse frizzy hair (I have the typical thick asian hair) u should definitely see DIANE! she is trained at Bumble & Bumble in NYC and let me tell you that she is a HAIRGOD! no one can cut layer pieces of hair like she does. the way she texturize n color hair its amazing! I have gotten soo many compliments when I went back home to San Francisco that I have to tell ppl to go to portland! n yes I do travel twice per yr to see my Diane in portland. n the last time I brought 3 of my cousins in to see her n they all love her! they were amazed to see that a caucasian lady could actually cut ASIAN HAIR better than Asian ppl! =) you won’t be disappointed… trust me. Now if only she would move to San Fran…
