Heidi does not have good customer service. I was trying to show her a pic on my phone for the cut I want and she just screamed at me to sit down as if she was talking to a child. Her place and tools she use to cut hair look filthy too! I would rather pay a good chunk of money to a hairdresser with good customer service, listens to customers and takes time cutting and styling my hair. Definitely not going back to that place!

I came in 30 minutes before close and needed a lil more then a trim and she did exactly what I wanted in about 20 minutes. It was only $ 13! It was great. Looks perfect :)

She did a nice quick job I’m really glad I stopped by there. Very affordable for what you get! I have to go by my next visit to Portland.

I’ve been going to Heidi since I was in high school over 7 years ago! I have gone other places due to necessity (out of town) and have always been disappointed. Heidi is quick and efficient and super flexible with what you ask for. What amazes me about her cuts are how they grow out. Most haircuts look good the first day but not many look good after 3 months.
I recently went to her to have her do highlights for the first time in my life. All I asked was for her to make it look more «natural» (I had originally wanted ombré but she doesn’t do ombré or balayage) so she did her highlights and also cut my layers in such a way that it looked more like balayage and a bit more natural.
I plan on staying with her as long as she does hair!

Getting my hair cut is something that I hate spending a lot of money on, particularly for how fast my hair grows, so I love coming here for a $ 13 hair cut. I live in Seattle now so all my friends and colleagues who shell out $ 70+ for haircuts are in disbelief that I can get a haircut so nice for so little money.
I’ve been coming to Heidi for years now and she’s always been really helpful with giving suggestions. I don’t even bring pictures now because she knows exactly what I’m talking about after a few words. I’ve been loving short hair for the past 2 years so every time I go, she masters the lob with slight layers. When I ask her to thin my hair out, it’s never too much to the point that my thick hair seems like a tiny rat tail if I put it in a ponytail (it has happened at other places. trust me). It’s always the perfect amount so that my hair feels nice and light, perfect for hot summer weather.
Call her beforehand because she’s often busy on weekends and it’s your best bet to schedule an appointment so that you’re not waiting around. Cash or check only.

All I got was a shampoo, blow dry and a really bad curling job. And she charged me 25 dollars… waste of money.
They don’t take time on your hair and they overcharge you if you’re not Vietnamese. How do I know this? Because I am Vietnamese and I can understand everything they’re saying. I just didn’t speak the language and over heard their conversation of charging me extra.

True that I could say something but would that changed the fact that they overcharged and their service was not well? Overall, won’t be coming back. If you want a place that actually take time and do a good job, it’s definitely not here.

Heidi is the most helpful hair design i have ever work with.
Her place is simple small, but her quality is beyond.
She took her time and cut your hair to make sure it look good. If you have no idea like i was and went there for the first time she would talk to you and try to help you figure out what would be best for your face, head, and current fashion world. After she finish cutting my hair, she spent sometime more time to help and teach me how to stylish my hair than the time it took her to cut my hair. She is extremely helpful and even on a regular day and you have something special to attend, she would happily style your hair if you stop by at the time that she is free.
When you there, make sure to be specific on what you want. She will make it right.
If you have no idea then you are in a good hand.

Walked in for a haircut. Her appointment was running late so she squeezed me in. I found a photo of a cut that I liked in the wait area for her to replicate. LIttle peeved that it took her only 7 minutes to cut my hair but for the price and the fabulous result, I can’t complain! I will definitely be coming back.

Heidi isn’t very nice. but her hair cuts are cheap an she cuts your hair in 10 minutes or less… which contributes to the 3 star review. She doesn’t even ask what kind of cut you are looking for before starting to cut your hair! If you are just looking for a quick cut and don’t care much for what happens to your hair this is the place for you!

We (my partner and I) had been struggling with two different hair stylists over the past three years. They seem to all be lunatics when you have a personal stylist, no matter how firmly you advertise that you need somebody who is professional.
We got to a point where we finally had to cut our current stylist, and were in desperate need of trims, and I popped onto Unilocal to see who in our area would be a good match for us for the right price and quality. Heidi’s name popped up.
We are Anti-​salon. We absolutely hate going into salons. But Heidi’s little shop is laid back, quiet, accomodating, and friendly. It’s just her, except on the weekends. We made an appointment.
We came in early because we were in the area, and beween the time we sat down in the waiting area (where cable tv is provided to keep you entertained, plus there’s also a couch to relax on), there were six different walk-​ins who came in hoping for an appointent. She scheduled them several hours past our appointment, and she was busy, running back and forth answering phones, scheduling walk-​ins, and cutting/​styling the entire time we were waiting. The customer she was working on while we were there waiting was very apparently a regular, who was going to New York for the first time ever and was ecstatic about having Heidi prepare her for the trip. She promised Heidi photos of the trip upon her return. Yes, this has little to do with the salon and Heidi, but what I’m trying to get across here is that she has a very good rapport with her customers, and five of those six walk-​in appointments seemed very familiar with her and the fact that she’s consistently very solidly booked.
When my partner (who is incredibly antsy about having her hair trimmed and styled) sat down, she told Heidi what she wanted, and Heidi did exactly as asked. If she sees you heading into a dangerous direction with your choice, she’ll make a helpful suggestion, but it remains only a suggestion if you’re insistant about your idea. My partner has had a hard time consistently liking any hair stylist’s work. Heidi has the magic touch. It’s perfect every single time.
We have since been back three times, and recommended a friend who was also super pleased with Heidi’s work, and has now been back twice. We will always come back. The second ime we called to tell her we wanted an appointment, she knew exactly who we were and, despite a busy schedule made time for us.
Cannot recommend her enough. We have short, complicated razor cuts that take a lot of precision for the right styling. She’s perfect for us.

So over the years, Heidi’s popularity has soared and that’s fantastic. However, I’m not sure if that has something to do with her lack of effort lately.
Between 2010 – 2011, Heidi took her time with my hair, asking me how I would like each section to be and measuring the lengths on both sides after her work is complete to make sure both sides are of equal length. She would take her shears and make precision cuts and would also pay close attention to my facial expression (if I liked it or not) throughout the process.
Not anymore. She is now chit chatting with other people while doing my hair, there’s nothing wrong with that, except that she is cutting my hair while NOT looking at my hair. When I made a comment about uneven layers, she she that’s how it’s supposed to be. I tried to explain to her that I don’t prefer that, but she didn’t seem to understand (she is vietnamese and I speak to her in english).
Back then, she spent at least 30 mins cutting my hair, now she spends under 15 mins. Yeah… unsettling.
On a brighter note, I found another cute Asian lady who is fabulous in cutting my hair (Mary also knows good english, this is now important because if there is a language barrier, you are probably not going to get the best result… I know, I know, late realization). I asked for layers but Heidi used about five minutes (possibly less…) and used a razor on my whole head. I rarely have split ends (I have fine-​medium, shiny, straight, healthy Asian hair that should not be difficult to cut at all) but after getting it cut by Heidi, I’ve never had more split ends in my life. My hair is rough to the touch, uneven in length, and there are thick chunks in certain areas. Overall, I came here because of the good ratings on Unilocal but I have no idea why anyone would come back to this salon. She took maybe 5 minutes razoring the life out of my hair (and with such speed that I doubt there was any structure to my cut) and then styled it with curls that made me look 35 instead of 21. The styling at the end also made it difficult for me to actually see what she had done to my hair. Oh, by the way, don’t expect too much in terms of communication, I found it difficult to understand her English.
Bottom line, maybe she can do a better job if you tell her specifically to not touch your hair with a razor, but I doubt that’s how she gets through the number of customers that she does in lightning speed. Anyway, I am never going back to Heidi’s Hair Design.

My hair is fine and somewhat straight… Heidi does a fantastic job… and the price… unbelievable. I am very fussy about my haircuts and have spent so much money trying to find someone like her that does exactly what I ask her to do…

I wanted to get my hair highlighted before I had to take a picture on registration day and for a back-​to-​school look. So me and my mom were thinking of hair salon to go and decided to go to Heidi’s because it was pretty close. In there I had to wait awhile and felt bad that I didn’t call in because I made somebody move their reservation to 5, but I love how she had it highlighted. It’s not as much color as I had anticipated but I’m fine with it. It was pretty quick too. Took like about an hour.

I really love going to Heidi’s. She understands what I want and she’s very efficient with cutting my hair. I’ve been going to her for a while and she has never failed me. On top of that the price is affordable. I always get compliments after a haircut. She’s super nice too. Thanks Heidi!

I’m not sure what the $ 9 price is for (guys, probably, since the only other 2 reviewers here are men haha), but my haircut was $ 11. I also had somewhat long hair so that may have been a factor.
Like Steven M. said, Heidi’s haircuts are quick yet precise and consistent. She’s also friendly and will chat with you. I’ve had a few haircuts where I almost fell asleep when my haircut was taking a long time and it’s completely silent, but she kept me awake. Super nice lady!
Definitely make an appointment… she often has same-​day appointments and since she seems to run the whole shop by herself, you don’t want to wait for all the other people that have their appointments all ready. I had to wait a little bit due to some miscommunication regarding some clients that walked in at the same time as me, but when I finally did get my hair cut I was satisfied. She even showed me how to properly sweep my side bangs, which no other hairdresser has ever been able to show me.
Highly recommended for Asians… she is Asian and knows Asian looks, so she’ll make sure you look good with your new haircut. She also has a lot of Korean and Chinese magazines as well as American magazines with different hairstyles.

Quick Haircut, consistant, she remembers me too! for $ 9 its hard to beat. Located in SE portland not far from the freeway, so its super conveinent when need be. But dont forget to call in and set an appt, else you could be sitting there a while!

Heidi will cut your hair for, I think, $ 9 (correct me if I’m wrong), and you will look like you blew $ 30 on some spiffing salon.
She does womens and kids too, and she manages to make the kids believe that getting their hair cut is an intriguing idea worth exploring. And since her place is 2 blocks from Wong’s King, you can get dim sum and a hair cut in one efficient outing.
