Great cart in the PSU pod, serving up some delicious home cooked southern comfort food. I believe they have a rotating menu each week with one veggie and one meat loving option. I had the jambalaya with the cornbread and it was delicious. Check them out if you are i the vicinity!

Warning! Warning! The food here is rather bland… Well, not exactly. It’s packed with so many spices and so many unique flavors but falls short on salt. I know I enjoy salt to the point that I may die young, but I can tell that there’s very very very little salt. if any in the food here. At first I thought it was just the dish/that I came on an off day, but the majority of the time I end up adding salt in. Everything is terrific! Just lacking salt. The gumbo has a great amount of protein in it. Big bang for your buck! I’m not a chicken and dumpling person, but it was decent. The chicken pot pie is goooood and home-y feeling. The food is perfect for a cold day. The food is slightly on the heavy side, but it’s like a cozy warm feeling as you eat. Its never put me in a food coma, so have no fear. Come early! This cart tends to sell out pretty quick! They don’t make it when you order, it’s already there. Menu changes everyday.

Consistently some of the best Gumbo in town. Prices are very reasonable and all dishes come with either fresh(and I mean fresh!) baked cornbread or an apple. I have never been disappointed here. But hurry, her hours are slim and supplies run low after the lunch rush. Highly recommended.

This cart is one of the best in Portland. It took me a while to discover it, but now I eat there every week. You have a choice between two Acadian-style dishes such as gumbo, jambalaya, potato tart, chicken piquant. It’s real, healthy, homemade cooking. It’s not greasy and doesn’t upset my delicate stomach situation. It’s also filling: $ 7 or $ 8 gets you a hearty meal. It’s also right in front of PSU’s new mini-park, so there’s adorable outdoor seating. Please don’t ever leave!

This cart has an elevated feel, the menu board is classy. Unfortunately, I’ve left a little underwhelmed each of the five times I’ve gone. That is, the end product just hasn’t matched the build-up that drew me in. Recently, I ordered Chicken and Dumplings: the chicken, vegetable medley and sauce just didn’t deliver, it was rather bland. I craved to douse it with hot sauce and pepper. However, the dumplings were above and beyond, buttery and flakey. The cornbread, meh. The service has been stellar. And this cart is a value play: you receive an ample portion for $ 7. They often run out of food and they seem to have a following, so my opinion is in the minority.

Everything is wonderful and delicious and incredible. I’ve literally never had anything here I disliked. If you’re at the PSU food carts, and Jalapeño Mac & Cheese is available, and you get something else, you are living life wrong. So. Start rethinking those choices. I haven’t LOVED the gumbo, cause I prefer gumbo thicker, but I would totally buy it again. I would buy any of the things again. This food is so good.

Great, simple food. I had the French lentil salad, which was delicious and made me feel healthy, but in a delicious way. Love that it comes with apple or cornbread. Two tantalizing choices everyday, so choose wisely!

Great food cart. Southern crockpot food like jambalaya and slow simmered stuff. And it always comes with cornbread!

I had white rice with sausage and corn bread. The food was very bland and the sausage was more like hot dog. The corn bread was nice and the meal was very filling, but I did have to add my own sauces to it.

There was only one lunch option left when we arrived: red beans, sausage, and rice. Seems authentic and homemade, but could’ve used more kick. The sausage seemed quality but didn’t have or add much flavor to the meal. We added Aardvark when we were at home which helped. While we weren’t wowed by the dish, the cornbread stole the show. May be the best cornbread I’ve ever had, and that alone warrants a return visit to try a different dish and get more cornbread. They were out of the jalapeño mac which we would have ordered, so we’ll be back.

So many great things to say about this cart. The food is incredible, inexpensive, and the simple menu(one meat dish, one salad) makes it easy to choose. The person running it is extremely friendly as well. It’s usually not as busy as the rest of the carts on 4th, and you get your food right away. Pretty much embodies all that I love about Portland food carts.

Hog and Hen = Homestyle Heaven!!! This is seriously delicious, home cooked and baked food(she actually has an oven in her cart, where she pulls out homemade cornbread, which is the perfect balance of sweet and salty). I’ve had the creamy chicken and smoked jalapeño dumplings with corn bread, but let me tell you, it was incredible!!! Then, I had the quinoa, spinach, and cheese dish: the vegetarian entrée for the week. It was good that I had it every day until she sold out! I dream about that quinoa, especially with her homemade cornbread! Wow. As others have said, there’s always one meat dish and one vegetarian dish. The owner offers service with a smile — truly as sweet and nourishing as her food. And, the prices are incredible for the amount of food($ 6 and $ 7 for entrees!). I’ve had two lunches out of one! A++.

I like this cart so well that I will order food there just because it’s open, even if I’m not hungry.

I can wholeheartedly agree with the preceding comment. The person running this cart made the act of ordering food more a something joyful than what it sometimes can be when looking on faces, that don’t make you excited to order something. Through what? Sheer kindness and friendliness. On top of that, and at the center — after all it’s still about the food — the pot pie on rice with cornbread(or apple, what a great choice!) was as delicious as it was balanced in terms of its composition as it was just the right amount. I never considered myself a fan of cornbread, often times being too dull and tasteless. This one at the very least makes me want to go back to this cart many more times, sweet, rich and not dry at all. Not to mention the pie itself, consisting of(noticeably) lean ground beef, onions, peas, carrots, and all wrapped up in puff pastry, that was remarkably non-greasy, yet rich in taste and gave it the right hearty kick. All in all, I’d highly recommend this place.

I had chicken and smoked sausage gumbo with corn bread on a cold winter day. It was quite filling but not heavy, easy to digest and flavorful. Waiting time was minimal and it is great for quick bite to eat.

Just had my first dish at Hog and Hen. A quinoa /spinach salad with almonds. And an apple on the side. Magnificent lunch! Very tasty, healthy, and full of goodness!!! This is like a home-style, health cart. I love it! I just started a new job in SW and I’m so psyched this cart is in my new backyard. I can’t wait to try out more dishes. You have to try this!

Hog & Hen is definitely worth trying if you’re in the area(and if she’s open). Two items are on the menu at a time, with the selection rotating periodically. Typically, in addition to the dish being offered you will receive either cornbread or apple. There are two nice aspects I’d like to highlight: 1. The charming young woman who runs the cart offers two sizes: large and small. That is very appreciated, as it helps you manage your caloric intake and save money. 2. She will offer to switch the cornbread or apple depending on your preference. Me? I dislike cornbread, so it is very appreciated to be offered an apple without even having to ask. My single favorite dish is the French lentil salad. It consists of French lentils cooked, as best I can tell, with mirepoix, salt and pepper, and a bit of wine vinegar for acidity. It’s served warm over spinach leaves and topped with diced fresh mozzarella and chopped toasted almonds. It’s simple, delicious, satisfying, and healthy. The cart is possibly the cleanest food cart you will ever see. If you’re hungry for lunch while with someone who has the slightest concern about food cart sanitation, take them to Hog & Hen. They’ll appreciate the care that is obviously taken as well as the high quality of the food. Highly recommended.

I’ve only been here once so I can’t speak to their rotating menu, but the gumbo I had here was delicious and hearty and a really good deal for $ 4. Like, a really good deal. Great flavors and spices, and a tasty piece of cornbread to boot.

I love the Hog and Hen! It is a great little cart with two wonderful weekly specials; one for meat-eaters and one for vegetarians. Same thing Monday through Friday so you can go back multiple times, say for the tomato tart(on flaky filo dough, with local heirloom tomatoes). Everything I’ve had here is amazing! Seriously check it out.
