Frist time visiting Hungry Tiger, and most likely the last. Fair enough its a café and pub. Looks the rite place for a larger or bitters. But i turned up soley for the gastronomical offerings. Ordered falafel pita or wrap and vegan curry. The falafel by themselves were not all that bad. But the sournding ingredients were lacking. It tasted too dry. That also could be because i requested vegan. It would have helped if their were a couple of large tomatoe slices and a nice piece of lettuce and onions. But instead it was tiny chopped up lettuce tomatoe and onion. It just didnt work for me. In addition they place your falafel on top of freshly made fries. The fries tasted good. But for me its too much deep fried. Fries and deep fried falafel. Whats healthy or benefical to my body? Next order vegan curry. It tasted very good placed on top of brown rice. The curry consisted of carrots, broccoli, snow peas or green beans and i believe onion and potatoe also. coconut curry sauce was yummy. However the portion was so rediculously small. the container(as i got take away) was over ¾ empty with the remaining ¼ containing food. I’d have been content even if it were half full. It was literally just enough for an infant. So while i like the flavour of mostly every thing. Falafel too dry and unhealthy; curry portion made me feel like i was robbed. :(i really wish i would have liked hungry tiger. It came highly recommended

Unfortunate bad service. Walked in here to watch the NBA finals with my friends, but couldn’t get a lick of service. Didn’t receive any courteousness of any kind with an, just a minute we’ll be right with you, no eye contact, totally ignored. The place smelled awesome as though the food was good, but we didn’t stick around to find out on account of the lack of service provided. My friend requested if they could turn on the other TV away from the bar and the waitress coped an attitude and said, in a minute, in a dark tone. Waited some more and eventually deciding to get out of this dump. Don’t waste your time here. I heard that the owner treats the employees horribly which in turn causes the employees to treat the customers the same way.

Great for a quick, cheap meal. The beer was good. The food was okay, but not anything I would crave, but would come back for something budget-friendly and a good atmosphere.

I came here just to eat, right before 730(and in case you’re wondering, that’s the best time to show up, it got super busy after I got my food). I just Unilocaled the place and was happy I showed up! I got tomato soup and grilled cheese, with the caramelized onions(SO good). Portland cider recommended by bartender. I’ll come here again one night. Entire meal was under $ 10

Great vegan pub food! This place had a super fun vibe, definitely more grunge/metal than we thought it would be. We ordered a tater tots basket, chicken things(tofu made to be like chicken wings) and a vegan burger with avocado. Everything was really tasty(not the healthiest, but we knew that going into it). The aioli that comes with the tots was creamy and delicious, I could not get enough of it. It was decently priced and there were lots of good options on the menu! I would go here again for sure, but don’t except a sit down restaurant. It is very much a bar where you can get some good greasy grub!

It’s not fine dining, or a brew pub or anything, but it’s pretty great. The atmosphere is to my liking and the vegan menu is high on the comfort-food factor.

First off, this is a grunge/metal bar. It’s decorated with garage sale tiger paintings and stuff, which is awesome. Food is fantastic, especially if you are vegan. They have everything on the menu with a vegan option. The sign outside is accurate: good food, stiff drinks. The service is generally poor. Long wait to order a drink and the bartenders are slow and cranky, for the most part. Food comes out quickly, though.

I went there a few days ago and Ill never go again. Me and my lady showed up there at a rather quite time, next to no one was there and we started talking about what we wanted to order when the the red headed bar tender started borderline shouting at us for our IDs and mind you we are a fair amount older then this guy, I reply with«hold on a second we are deciding», no one was behind us, so he shouts«ID’s!», okay fine, we show our ID’s and they he said«what do you want?», I just said we were deciding so calm down. What a crappy person, I don’t care if you had a hard day or not you need to chill the fuck out and not yell at people the second they walk into your bar. Enjoy pouring drinks the rest of your life.

Service here is exceptional! Great beers on tap, and food that you will start to crave. Wings are amazing and tots are so good. I’m not vegan but tried the vegan ranch and was in love. You need to experience the hungry tiger!

Went here last night, had the tempeh bacon, avo, tomato sandwich, it was awesome and vegan. They have a lot of good vegan options. However, both the bartenders seemed like they hated the fact that I exist on this planet and chose to go into their establishment to give them my money, which is why I didn’t give them 5 stars. Honestly I am really not high maintenance at all, but these bartenders made my friend and I seem like they seriously HATED us and everyone in the bar. No greeting, no smiles, no thanks for coming in, incredibly slow service(never once looked over at us or asked if we needed anything), and the dude threw the check at me and just walked away. I asked my friend if that was like this bar’s «thing” — like the bartenders are known to be super rude and people go there because it’s funny and sort of an act. Five stars for the amazing sandwich, good beers, and Buck Hunter. Negative two stars for the bartenders who should look into a different career path.

If I had to characterize the vegan fare here in three words — fried vegan errrthang! This joint was recommended strictly for the vegan corn dogs and being that I can’t even remember the last time I had a corn dog, Hungry Tiger = absolute must. The first time we rolled up in here(that’s right we came here twice within a four days span), it was right at its 3 p.m. opening time. We ordered two corn dogs and the cheesy vegan tater tots with a couple of adult beverages — what’s fried food without the accompanying alcoholic beverages?! Now I know that battering and frying virtually anything will increase its tastiness by 90%. Nonetheless, whoah, much delicious, much delicate slightly sweet crispiness, much«why did we only order two of these corn dogs?» The tots weren’t messing around either but again, probably nearly impossible to goof up fried potatoes in any form, but the runny cheese sauce was a delicious savory touch. We had the beet fries, tofu wings, and spinach and beets salad during our second visit. The omnivore husband actually suggested we stop by here a second time because he’s awesome like that/perhaps sadistically enjoys watching me grub down on vegan things inaccessible where we’re from. The beets seem to originate from a can, but of course they were more than acceptable with that deep fried breaded casing and soy based dipping sauce. Tofu wings consisted of frozen and thawed tofu deep fried and then drenched in buffalo sauce. The consistency fascinated the pants off of the husband, being an aficionado of regular chicken wings and not quite understanding the mechanics and transformative nature of tofu, he gobbled them up. Perhaps feeling guilty about the excessive fatty indulgences, we did also enjoy the lovely salad. I can’t quite recall the dressing at the moment, but it was delicious, along with everything else. I’m going to go ahead and proclaim that this is my favorite greasy inexpensive vegan fare place, ever. The establishment itself can be best characterized as «divey,» in that I wish there was a post restroom restroom for the actual restrooms, know what I mean? I was fond of the tiger-themed and eclectic art crowding the walls, they were a nice backdrop for my stuffing my face with fried everything.

The hungry tiger confirms once more that vegan does not necessarily equal healthy! If you have a craving for some soulfood that comforts you on a rainy day in Portland this is your place to go!!! The Tot-chos(combination of tater tots and nachos) really made my night the day I was there and are a perfect plate to share with a table while enjoying some of their delicious(seasonally changing) cocktails. Also a great recommendation are the beet fries which are a very welcomed alternative to regular fries but just as satisfying! The vings(vegan tofu wings with BBC sauce) were not as mind blowing as the other dishes and drinks but a good alternative to regular wings. Certainly no health food but who expects healthy food at a place where they play pool and darts anyways ;)

This place used to be my favorite, back when it was just the restaurant. They had a fantastic menu where one side was vegan and the other was for meat eaters. It catered to all. Now its just a shitty bar with a few things to eat. Every time i’ve been here the bartenders have been rude. Last time my boyfriend and i were there a bartender threw the check at us. Needless to say, we haven’t been back. Not so great on the customer service. I miss the way it used to be! And all the waitresses used to be sooo nice.

«At the Tiger, you can be yourself.» This is my local watering hole for the following reasons: Stiff drinks. Cool art and lighting. Pool table and 6 pinball machines. Back patio with both covered area and sunny tables. Great food! Tiger’s menu is both vegan and carnivore friendly– which I appreciate. I love the fish and chips, Ruben sandwich and burger. It’s great to be able to go out with my friends who are vegan and/or have food allergies and not have to sacrifice my own meal. Tiger’s fries are some of the best in the hood. Mmmmmm. I want a Ruben and fries now. Tiger has brunch from 11a-3p on Saturday and Sunday. Trivia on Sunday night is fun. Corn dog it up on Wednesdays, they are $ 2 each or 3 for $ 5 all day. The clientele is a whole lot of regulars, mixed with interesting randos on Friday and Saturday nights. Darcy slays behind the bar on the weekends and gives great service. 90% of the bartenders are great. Go check out the Tiger!

I don’t know what the hell is in the Ty Cobb, probably because I blacked out after two of them, but it is delicious and it would behoove you to line up an Über ride for yourself and order one or two. I do remember having a very delightful time here — there is a bar-sized pool table in the side room along with several pinball machines and booths. This place does get quite crowded and it can be a little difficult flagging a bartender down for a drink if you’re not with someone who’s a regular. As for the food, I can only review the tot basket which I ordered with ranch. $ 4.50 — not too bad for the rather surprisingly large portion I received. They’re tots — nothing fancy — but wonderful when you’re hammered.

ATMOSPHERE: Casual, low lit bar with coin op pool table and a couple tvs. Sometimes they’ll take the big screen down for important games, but then you can’t play pool without being in the way. SERVICE: Bar tenders seem a little aloof, some are awkwardly quite, and they got our drinks wrong(simple mixed drinks, mind you) but the kitchen usually keeps good time. FOOD: Better than average. Build your own burger is the way to go, but gets pricy fast. Bacon is usually chewy, and they totally skimped on the avocado! I had two tiny slices, barely a teaspoons worth. For a dollar?! They seem to do a better job with their numerous vegan options than with meat.

Rock hard popcorn kernels in the falafel dumplings– no joke and lucky I didn’t break a tooth– told the bartender who is cool — yet still had to pay full price including a $ 2 substitution charge for salad Instead of fries and the salad was smaller than an airplane serving — Come on now folks–

The vegan mac was awesome! Seriously the best I’ve had so far. I guess I need to go looking for a place like this in LA because I have yet to find a vegan mac and cheese this good in LA. My friends who can totally eat dairy were blown away that it was so good and they couldn’t tell it wasn’t real cheese. Perfectly season, reminded me of mac you get from a soul food place. I would have given this place 5 stars just on the mac alone, but they made a little boo boo in my order and I got attitude from the bartender for mentioning it, but he handled it(with attitude) to make sure I was satisfied. And satisfied I was so thanks even though you were not nice about it. I will be back next time I’m in Portland. It’s a MUST!

Another cool dive bar in town. This one was introduced to me by Krystal F. It is a favorite location for her when she’s down in this area. They have good vegetarian options like tofu buffalo wings. The cheap beer isn’t a bad choice either. They have a nice semi-covered patio out back and on an 80 plus degree day, it’s nice to have some shade and a good breeze. The Gabacho Chicken sandwich for me and«wings» and fries for her. The chicken sandwich was pretty good with a little spicy kick to it which was in the form of roasted green chilies. YUMMMMMM. The pepper jack, caramelized onions and avocado did wonders as well. The fries were pretty good, but could have been a little crispier. Good and friendly service and a pretty darn good bartender holding down the fort and a sweet little place to boot. Thanks Krystal!

YUM !!! Their vegan food is BOMB. We got lucky, our vacation rental was just a couple blocks from this place. It was late and we were starving ! It’s a bar, so don’t come in with expectations of a clean fancy restaurant. It’s a dive bar … but with amazing food !!! I actually think the bar itself is pretty cute. The food seemed high quality. We had the mac & cheese, fries, tlt and falafel wrap. All were delicious. Prices are good too.

So many of my thoughts about well-loved establishments begin with«I really wanted to love this place but…» and this goes for the Hungry Tiger. I live up the street from HT and I’d love to be able to pop in for a drink every now and then but that’s a difficult task to accomplish when I stand at the bar for ten minutes without being acknowledged. Really reduces the convenience of living nearby; I could’ve walked over to a bar on Burnside and been drinking a beer by that point. To be fair I’ve had pretty good service at other times but the reality of bartending is that it’s a customer service industry and a basic aspect of customer service is that you, at the very least, acknowledge the customer. Meaning a basic response to someone walking up to the bar should be something to the effect of: «hey there, I’ll be with you in a second!» Instead, my experience(on a non-busy night) went like this: walk up to the bar wait 10 minutes while trying make eye contact with four different employees get addressed by a bartender and ask if they will be showing a game on TV get told it’s on the monitor in the other room bartender immediately asks patrons next to me, drinks in hand, what they want next they respond and I chime in asking if I can get two Rainiers bartender tells me to «hold on» which is my breaking point and I walk out I am a customer service employee myself so I know the shit of the industry but you do not tell a customer to «hold on.» I’m not a dick customer, I simply want some acknowledgment, sorry. I know that certain customers are favored for one reason or another but nothing ticks me off more than being snubbed– it’s arrogant. A business benefits from my money as much as anyone else’s. All that said, weekday nights I have experienced better service. I like the food and I like the environment. I’ll go back, hence two stars, but I won’t hesitate to walk out if I have to deal with shitty service because no establishment is worth a bad attitude.

Some people just can’t be pleased I guess. I really enjoyed myself here. I went on a Monday which was happy hour all day, and I got the Corndogs which were stellar. Service was attentive but not over bearing. The drinks were good and the prices were very fair compared to most vegan places. This is a great bar to come to if you wanna avoid pretentious bar tenders/patrons and eat bar food(the also have some meat there too so it’s great for all) and not be bothered by crazy loud music and over the top people. Keeping my review short, but I’ll be back. Don’t bother with these sassy reviews of people who seems to enjoy complaining about everything.

Not impressed at all. There was limited seating, so we grabbed a table by the door that hadn’t been wiped down yet. No one ever did come to wipe it down. We ordered at the bar, the bar tender was pleasant. The server that brought our food however, was totally rude. She didn’t say a single word to us — she brought the food and then an additional plate and napkins when we asked before she left, but she never said one word, even when we said thank you. I’m going to just assume she was a robot. The«Vwings» are basically just tofu drenched in Franks Red Hot. The nachos with vegan cheese were extremely soggy — the bottom chips were mush and inedible. With all of the options in Portland, we have no reason to ever return to The Hungry Tiger.

What’s not to like about this place?! Honestly. I don’t get the negative reviews. The vegan food was great. Best vegan corndogs I’ve ever had! Their hand-cut fries were amazing, too. It’s all bar food so don’t come in here if you’re expecting anything else. The service was also great. The bartenders were friendly and attentive. They made sure that our drinks(even when we only ordered water) were always full. Food didn’t take too long to come out. The vibe in there is killer. Chill and relaxed. Punk meets goth meets your grandmas house. Kitschy tiger shit everywhere. Pinball machines. Lots of seats at the bar. Good amount of tables for groups. Totally recommend this spot if you’re looking for something cool, divey and fun. Can’t wait to go back for the giant pancakes!

Happy hour beers for $ 1.50. ‘Nuff said. Sometimes vegetarian/vegan places can seem overly pretentious — but this place definitely avoids that. Also, I am not a vegetarian/vegan but the food is decent as well as inexpensive and there is a nice back patio. A nice little neighborhood dive bar to add to your rotation.

Meh. I was pretty excited about this place despite the mixed reviews… So I took my little sis here to grab dinner. I love American diner food, but this place was not worth the money or the wait. I got the«life changing» vegan mac and cheese and it was garbage. Totally bland. Basically noodles and butter. I topped it with tapatio to liven it up a bit. My sister seemed to enjoy her TLT. I won’t be coming back. Nothing special or worth while about the hungry tiger. Two stars for serving vegan food. :/

Perfect Sunday morning brunch spot to avoid the ridiculously long lines that are all the rage in PDX. Service isn’t the quickest, but it’s designed that way. Mosey over to the jukebox with your hangover cure of choice(fine coffee, decent Bloody Marys) and relax. The staff is in keeping with it’s punk roots — aloof, but they KNOW their shit. They’ve got their food and drink menu down pat! They’ve also got a great selection of hearty vegan options with a wide selection of meat analogues. You’ll find great music, knowledgeable staff, and patrons who FEEL your pain post-Saturday night festivities(or maybe the festivities carried through to brunch?) Just what the doctor ordered. One complaint: my coffee cup had lipstick smudges on it, which is why I can’t give a five star review. I understand minimal lighting is part of the rules of all bars, but don’t skimp on this factor in the kitchen.

This place was a bust. They advertise strong cocktails but they do not succeed on delivery of such. The bartender was rude and inattentive. The food offerings are, well, hipster. If you’re a vegan or vegetarian and like to pay ridiculous prices for food, drinks, pool and pinball or video games, then this place is just for you. The pool table is basically metered and when it didn’t accept the input, the bar wouldn’t help us in any way: «it wasn’t their table». No, sorry, just a lame bad service answer. The pinball and video games were outrageously priced. I think one pinball game was 75 cents per game. For pinball. The food? So-so. My friend had the grilled chicken sandwich and said it was too small for the price. The french fries with parmesan, garlic and rosemary should have been a treat were limp and underseasoned. I had the hamburger and plain fries and the hamburger was so small you could barely taste that there was hambuger. It was all bread and toppings. Good luck on medium-rare. That sucker was a crispy critter. Eww. More limp fries on my side. Healthy portion but I wasn’t paying for french fries as the bulk of my meal. The condiments on the tables were filthy and the tables themselves were none too clean so I would say with some certainty that the place has cleanliness issues. Bad staff does that. This place probably is propped up by the vegan community otherwise it would have closed long ago.

I friggin’ love this place!!! I live in Sacramento and visit PDX for the weekend about every two months. I usually arrive Thursday night and the first thing I do after leaving the airport is pick up my friend and go here for 50 cent vings(vegan wings). I like both the buffalo and BBQ vings, but have a slight preference for buffalo because I like spicy. I usually order about seven of them and eat them directly with my hands even though it can get kind of messy. Both the service and atmosphere are good here and it attracts a laid back crowd. Since my friend is a smoker, we usually sit on the back patio so he can smoke back there after we are done eating. They also have cool hoodies with a Tiger design which are affordably priced. I’m already looking forward to the next time I get to come back here while visiting PDX.

Hungry Tiger is well… It’s Hungry Tiger! Hubby and I are not drinkers, kinda the glass of red wine on occasion types. I think they had $ 1PBR’s or something. We just wanted to junk out… and junk out we did!!! We ordered waters(it’s serve yourself near the bar) corndogs and french fries, nachos, pretzel bites and a side of cheese… oh and it was wing night so some buffalo and some BBQ of those… I love the pinball machines and cute pics on the walls! Shortly after we ordered the food came out, too much food. Hubby didn’t like any of it. Actually he didn’t like the place period :) No sure what he expected. I thought it was cute, dark, divey, and at least there was no smoking allowed inside! I wish we had a vegan bar in Vegas. I would really like to open my own. But I’m pretty sure I could spank the hell out of the comparison of their food. It’s junk food. Take this place at face value.

I heard great things about their vegan mac and cheese and had to try it for myself. Aaaaaand it was life-changing. It tasted like regular but even better, richer, and more creamy. You can add things to it and I chose caramelized onions, tomatoes & basil, and bacon. I get the vegan one for the vegan cheese, best believe I’m a full throttle carnivore. If dairy is an issue and you miss your beloved mac and cheese, then Hungry Tiger is where it’s at. I’ve also tried their soft pretzel with vegan cheese, but it was a little too salty for me.
