I am very happy that I decided to work with John to buy my first home. The best thing about John is that he is extremely knowledgable not only about the Portland real estate market, but also about homes and construction in general. Moving from Manhattan I was expecting brokers to help with my rental search. This is not the case. But John was classy enough to let me know that. Beyond that, he put me in contact with two property managers and passed the specs I was looking for onto over 300 others.
He really expedited my search and for that, I am so grateful! He was prompt, courteous, communicative and a great person to connect you with others. I was blown away that he didn’t charge for his time or advice. I can’t even imagine how great he must be for those buying homes. He really looks out for his customers.

Meeting John and his family last year has been such a serendipitous blessing for us! We first met John at a random open house and immediately found him to be kind and knowledgeable; he felt like a friend we had known for a long time. We explained our housing predicament and he listened with open ears. Without any pressure at all, he offered to run some comps on our rental property to help us decide if would be a good idea to sell or continue renting. He even offered up resources and ideas for how to more effectively manage the rental!
Long story short, he sold the house on the first day it was listed. Once we decided to list it, he took care of all the details and had great local referrals for landscaping, maintenance work, and cleaning crews to spruce the place up. Just like John, his referrals are all hard-​working local folks, and they all had a great professional demeanor and did fantastic work at an affordable price.
Did I mention the house sold on the first day? I also have to say that John had to deal with a very difficult neighbor throughout that ordeal. John personally hosted the open house to ensure this guy didn’t try any funny business, and went above and beyond to protect the deal and ensure all parties were safe. He set out into a potentially tricky situation, and he handled it with smarts, grace and a terrific sense of humor.
It was a no-​brainer to continue our relationship and have him represent us as buyers this spring. He was always available at a moment’s notice to go look at houses, and he was just as fast when it came to submitting offers, which turned out to be critical in this seller’s market! Amidst this crazy local buying frenzy, we got into a great house in our ideal location, and didn’t pay any more than we needed to. And, we had a blast while doing it.
We love John and his family. He is a hard-​working, honest guy with a great heart, and his wife and daughter are truly lovely. We are happy and grateful to include them as part of our community. Instead of looking at houses now, we’ll be doing runs up Mt. Tabor and getting together for family dinners!

I have bought and sold approximately 18 homes and I can honestly say that John McKay is, by far the best realtor I have ever worked with. I met John at one of his open houses. From that time, I knew he was going to be my realtor for life! He is so outgoing and so excited about the housing market in Portland. He loves this city and loves his job. He is totally dedicated to finding the perfect house for me. He never pressures me and often suggests houses that are less expensive. I have never had an agent do that. John is extremely knowledgable about Portland. He knows every little neighborhood! He usually knows someone in every neighborhood we drive through! He is SO easy to be around! He knows construction and he tells me both positive and negative issues regarding a home. He is not just out for the sale. His goal is to have his clients happy in the perfect house for them. He understands that building a business is not about making that one sale, but being a trusted consultant for lifetime housing needs of his clients and their families. John has been great about re-​showing me a house I am interested in so that my 2 children can see it and give me their opinions.. Sometimes he has shown me a house 5 times! Unheard of you might say, but John is different. He cares about his clients. Another remarkable quality about John is that I rarely have to wait more than 10 minutes for a reply to an email or text.
