Awesome, I love the vibes of this place. Large enough for people to have a quiet sit down and for my son to play with toys on the other side. Toys are a little dirty, but hey atleast they have them! Lots of menu options and drool worthy pastries. Best VLT(vegan blt) ever. Friendly staff. Definitely will come back next time I’m in Portland.

Cooperatives are always adorable, and this is another shining sunny example of why this model works! When you walk into the establishment, no one is there to greet you, but that’s ok. It’s pretty self-explanatory. There are menus by the door. There are also a lot of different but comfortable places to sit — differences in seating, tables, height, and number. Keep walking, and if you’re like me, you will get sucked into the pastry display case with vegan baked goods and about 3 – 4 gluten free vegan locally made baked goods… Drool. There are also some other snacks(raw, vegan, gluten free, organic, local, delicious choices) on the side wall(to the left of the counter) that will likely detract you… so stay focused: order first! Luckily, everyone here is very nice and patient. They have many delicious espresso and coffee choices, as well as hot tea for those who like a cup of camellia sinensis to liven up the moment. Almond milk, soy milk, yup. Delicious. This is the perfect morning routine: go to Local Sprouts, order a latte, pick a pastry/baked good, and enjoy the day. If you prefer something heartier, oh yes, they have you covered. The menu is beautifully marked for those with dietary restrictions. Even so, if you are gluten free and/or vegan, there are so many options. I drool thinking back about this delicious café. I also love that they have a map of where their ingredients have their origins. Cool. The menu has great salads, sandwiches and standards — like rice and beans, mac n cheese, burritos, tofu scramble, stir fries and rice bowls. No vegan will go hungry here. All people will enjoy the food here, too, because there is also locally raised chicken and meat available. The goal of this place is to be sustainable, equitable and local. I love the theme and the food. So many choices that you really can’t just visit once and be content. The problem is when you want to try other places but remember there was something else you wanted to eat here! The staff is friendly. The prices are affordable. The food is fresh and local. This place is legit. Loved it. Oh, and bus your own tables, please.

How the hell is this place still in business? Slow service, bad food, overpriced everything. It’s a vastly inferior version of Chase’s Daily in Belfast. I would give one star, but the service, while thoroughly incompetent, was genuinely nice. There are too many places nearby that are better. Never again.

Got the Peanut Butter Cupcake and the Pumpkin Maple Moonpie. Didn’t realize they were vegan until halfway through. That usually makes me wary but these were amazingly delicious. They were only slightly dry, which happens with vegan baking — but not dry enough to detract from taste. Staff was friendly — broke a dollar for me to feed the meter. Vibe is definitely hipster, but laid back. Some guy even hopped on the piano — that they nicknamed«Thumper» — and started playing medleys of Beatles, Grateful Dead and Leonard Cohen. I’m not sure if he works there. Maybe distracting to some looking for silence, but I enjoyed it.

Great place! Had the veggie burger! Best veggie burger I’ve ever had. Husband got the VLT and loved. Everything looked fresh.

As someone who is both vegetarian and gluten free, this place is one of the best in town. The egg and cheese sandwich with a side of potatoes(veggie) is a great breakfast. The dark roasted coffee is a little much for me, but the medium or light roast are solid. I haven’t had much more than breakfast, so I can’t speak to other times of the day. The kid’s play area is a great bonus as well.

The pesto, tomato, goat cheese breakfast sandwich is absolutely wonderful! Make sure to get the organic home fries as a side!

Grab a menu, order at the counter, find yourself a seat, pour your own glass of water, and don’t forget to bus your own table. So, remind me why I’m tipping with my payment. Oh well, this was my only regret when it came to my recent visit to Local Sprouts. I was(as I often am) craving something healthy yet delicious. Affordable is always a bonus. The Havest Wrap($ 8.95) fit that bill splendidly. The roasted seasonal vegetables, house pesto, melted Cabot cheddar and Morse’s pickles wrapped in a whole wheat wrap was light, fresh, very tasty and even rather hearty. It’s always served with a daily side, and on this day it was a refreshing salad that included mint, red onions and more pickles. Everything on the menu is simple, locally sourced, and organic. The clientele is as natural as the food. Bras, deodorant, and probably shoes, are all apparently optional.

I hadn’t eaten here in quite some time and I remember why. The food was appropriately priced, which I appreciated, but it took almost an hour to get it. The counter service makes for a weird vibe, and the line was incredibly long. I shared the chicken mushroom gnocchi and a pollock wrap. The gnocchi was okay, the sauce it was in was rich and creamy, almost like gravy. The fish wrap was also okay, nothing to write home about. With all the choices in Portland and surrounding areas, I probably won’t be back.

I’ve only visited Local Sprouts for breakfast, but I’m a fan. I also definitely thought I wasn’t «cool» enough to eat here, but my mother proved me otherwise(she has been a few times). The staff seems less than enthused, but it’s kind of the appeal. The food is relatively quick and there are some great drink options. They serve beer and I believe some cocktails. I went for breakfast, so unfortunately didn’t explore their alcoholic drinks too much. However, the coffee was great! Local Sprouts is accommodating to all(Gluten-Free, Vegan, Vegetarian Meat Eaters, etc.). The breakfast sandwich was delicious with bacon(they were out of sausage that day) and there were a few hot sauce options. The homemade english muffin was a little crispy and quite tasty. The home fries I got were rainbow potatoes and they were good, but a little on the burnt side. I’ll definitely be back, maybe for lunch or some live music this time.

I went for breakfast on a week day and was pleasantly surprised to find a seat immediately(in a town where breakfast joints are constantly PACKED). Inventive, crunchy, fun and very wholesome. My favorites — the home fries which are coated in an amazing crunchy exterior, perfectly poached eggs on a whole grain english muffin and pretty yummy vegan sausage, marinated in maple and balsamic. Decent coffee, and really reasonable prices.

My wife and I are musicians and occasionally find ourselves booked in Maine for various gigs. This place has quickly become our favorite stop along the way. Nearly every destination in Maine finds its way through the Portland area and for a quick stop off the highway I can’t recommend a better stop! The ingredients are all locally sourced, in fact they have a map on their wall listing all the farms they source from. I can’t say enough what a treat it is to eat from a restaurant that GENUINELYCARES about their ingredients! They are consistently excellent. I don’t think I’ve had anything there that hasn’t been worth a 5 star rating, and I’ve tried a great number of items on the menu! I’m vegan, my wife is not, and together we have both been impressed and pleased every time we’ve gone. And for those people in relationships out there I’m sure you can relate to the challenge of finding places that both you and your significant other swoon over. This is the place! Really quality ingredients, well prepared, the menu changes all the time so the variety stays fresh, yet they keep the standard favorites in a regular rotation so you really can’t miss. Also on the Sundays they have a great old-timey bluegrass/folk group playing there for the brunch hour and we have always enjoyed their performances! Typically guitar, upright bass, piano, vocals, often accompanied by guest harmonica, sax, accordion, etc. Again, we’re musicians, so we’re really picky when it comes to music. And they are incredibly talented musicians that clearly play from their hearts and for the love of their craft(but that isn’t to say they don’t appreciate the tips — tip well, these guys deserve it!) Honestly I can’t say enough great things about this place. I recommend it to anyone traveling through Maine, make it a stop on your way, it’s worth it. P. S. — If you’re lucky enough to be there on a day that they have bloody Mary’s available, don’t pass it up! And the vegan desserts… daaaaaaammmmmnnnn… grab a pumpkin whoopie pie! The bomb!

Love the concept! This place is owned and managed by the employees. A true co-op. This was our second choice for breakfast after leaving another packed establishment. Man we me made a good choice to leave the packed place! Fabulous menu with vegan to meatatarian options. You walk up to the counter to order then find yourself a spot at a table, couch, bar or anywhere! I had a chai drink with liquor in it that was superb, we also had some homemade strawberry basil kombucha which was great. Can’t go wrong with any of the breakfast sandwiches but mine was the best — Egg, pesto, goat cheese and tomatoes served between an english muffin from the place next door. There is a map on the wall of all of the places in Maine they receive their food from. Finally, there was a 4-piece band that I absolutely loved. They were perfect for my morning breakfast on a rainy day. The harmonica/saxaphone player was truly a joy and they also had a stand-up bass. Great times. Great place. Great food.

Stopped by this place on a rainy Sunday morning while visiting Portland. Best decision of the day! The vibe is very homey. The live music was perfect for the weather. If you are looking for a place to grab breakfast, lunch, or coffee, definitely come check out this great spot in the middle of town!

A quick lunch stop in Portland to visit a friend, who recommended this place to eat partly because it has good veggie choices but also because it is pretty easy to find. This latter quality proved a bonus as our borrowed sat-nav had failed that very morning so we were navigating by old-school methods. The place has an extremely laid back vibe about it — so laid back that you have to do your own serving for everything. However I no complaints about the food — I had a miso tempeh wrap, and herself had the cornmeal-seared pollock sandwich, both absolutely delicious and a perfect size for lunch. The fifth star is for the coffee, which by far and away is the best I’ve had In New England this trip.

I stopped by Local Spouts on Memorial Day Monday to have breakfast and watch the parade through the window. Service was slow and the line to order stretched all the way to the entrance door. I ordered Tim’s world famous burrito, paid, and looked for a decent table to watch the parade. The tables were filthy and the floor was not swept. The water pot was leaking when I went across the room to get a glass. The place was packed and my service took 45 minutes! The staff should of prepared themselves for a busy holiday. When my finally food arrived I was so hungry that I didn’t take the time to fully enjoy the meal. The burrito did not taste«world famous». I respect that they support local food sources and products but it’s no excuse to not operate a restaurant properly. I wish hadn’t paid upfront and left a generous tip.

Unilocal reviews brought me here for Friday night dinner. I was looking for a casual place to sit, write in my journal, people watch, and with paleo-friendly food, free wifi, and an artsy vibe. Nailed it!

It’s been a while, old friend. I forgot my lunch in my fridge the other day, so I ventured over to Local Sprouts for some grub. While waiting, though, I had to listen to some teenager-esque gripes from the staff to other staff. Also, a woman stopped in with some extra flyers hoping to have them displayed(they supposedly feature Local Sprouts inside). While her inquiry received feigned politeness, the second she walked out the door, she and her flyers were mocked. Not cool… but, then again, I’m probably not cool enough to eat here anyway since I probably wouldn’t have heard any of this had I stuffed earbuds in.

I was looking for a place to eat breakfast, drink tea, and hang out for a couple hours, and this place sounded like the kind of crunchy New England place I’d like. I stopped in around 10:00 am on Tuesday, and though it wasn’t packed, the place was rather full(don’t people go to work in Maine?). After glancing at the laminated menus, I ordered the vegan pancakes topped with mysterious«fruit sauce» and a cup of free trade earl grey. Annoying, there were no prices on the menus, but my total came to less than $ 10, so I guess the pancakes were pretty cheap(fruit sauce was an extra $ 1.50, I think). The earl grey was alright, but for the price of over $ 2, my cup was tiny — could have definitely used more hot water. I sat at a table in the middle of the room, and had no problem connecting to the wifi. Don’t get me wrong, I loved the«rustic» motif, but my table wobbled, which drove me crazy. Enough time I had passed that I began to wonder if I was ever going to get my food, but at that moment the waiter brought out my pancakes. They were great, at first. The sauce was sweet but not too much so, and the pancakes had a delicious crispy edge. However, the sauce was piled high on top of the pancakes, and quickly began soaking through… making them taste raw and gooey. Had I known, I guess I could have specified I wanted the sauce on the side. Overall, it was an alright place, and might have been fun with a group for cocktails, and they had some fun ones on the board I would have liked to try. Not sure I’d go back for breakfast, though.
