Market of Choice

They are consistent at having the worst customer service. The check out staff is actively rude to their customers. Just today, at the express checkout the cashier named Roxanne C., yelled at me for hitting the wrong button on the credit card machine. She completely lost patience with me. I regret not having the time to address her poor behavior with her manager, as this is not the first time I have experienced such gross lack of manners in this grocery store. Quite frankly, this is the reason I hardly ever shop at this store/​location. I choose to go to the New Seasons, even though the Market of Choice is closer to where I live.

This definitely would be my market of choice if I lived in the area! It’s very gourmet yet has some really reasonable prices.
I was in town visiting my friends and needed some food-​like wares to ensure I stayed on my healthy track so they suggested this place. We walked in and I was immediately in awe because it reminded me of an oversized Trader Joes! This place was definitely my jam because it wasn’t cookie cutter and had all the items I wanted and needed to make this a very successful trip.
One last notable was their café seating complete with a fireplace for some cozy dining or even reading a good book! Yeah this is what grocery shopping should be for sure!

Although I’d eaten their fresh made burritos that a coworker had brought me, and enjoyed them, today was the first I visited the store myself. I only needed 3 things, blueberries, raspberries, and flank steak. Picked up the raspberries, later found them to be tasteless, blueberries were not to be found, same with flank steak. Bought some flat iron steak instead which was quite good, and some wild sockeye salmon. One visit and on a holiday as well, but not impressed with first impression. That being said, I will give them another chance.

What a great grocery store! There’s a great selection of high end goods, and it’s matched by an equally extensive selection of generic items. The people are really friendly, and almost always provide great service. It only took a few months for this place to become my go to store. Highly recommended.

When they first opened they had great bakery. But they went trough a lot of staff changes so now I can say is the worst in this part of Portland.
We used to buy the challah bread, but they either change the baker of the recipe, because the last two times we got it it was so dry and it tasted like it was a week old.
The second disappointment came when I purchased cake for my coworkers birthday to discover it was frozen when I got to work. If I picked the cake at the freezer section I would expect it but not if I pick it up from the bakery.
My husband got cinnamon rolls last night and they where the worst we’ve ever had. Rolls where supper dry and frosting was super sugary and sweet .
If you are craving some sweets there are better choices and less expensive In the area.

A little too spendy for my liking, it’s almost like a more expensive trader joes. Their selection isn’t incredible. I do like the gelato section! They have decent sushi too, for when you have a little craving and just want to get something quick.

This place may be a little on the spendy side, but it’s cheaper than a New Seasons!
The bakery has amazing cheesecakes and other great sweets!
The meat department has great chicken and steaks, perfect for a BBQ!
The nachos, soups, sushi and burgers are all excellent in the in store kitchen!
The produce department has a great selection of local vegetables and fruits, as well as a machine that makes fresh orange juice in store!
The beer and wine department has an overwhelming selection, as well as a growler station! Freaking fantastic! As well as some of the cheapest growler fill prices around!
This store has everything you need, why go anywhere else!!!

Yes please. More, more, more! What a cool place. They have just about every and any food item you can think of. Tons of drink selections and in house eating as well. Super impressive times 3

All I can say is I’m super disappointed. Here it is Christmas Day and I picked up 3 pies, strawberry rhubarb, cherry Black Forest, and no sugar added peach.
The strawberry rhubarb had big chunks off inedible rhubarb. Hard big chunks of woody, with ropes of strings you can’t chew. Like awful!
The cherry Black Forest was frozen when I picked it up i put it in our fridge overnight as instructed. The pie looked ok but much to everyone’s disappointment the texture was like ricotta cheese, and the taste not so hot.
The peach was better, though the crust undercooked.
Seriously, pick up a pie from Costco or Sheri’s. Overpriced frozen undercooked pies. Good thing I have several ice creams or no dessert for Christmas.
Lessoned learned. Trendy but overpriced mediocre hot food, bad bakery

Having a party, call Corbin, kitchen manager. They just catered all the food for our Xmas party. Chicken, veggies, fruit, sandwich’s, meat & cheese, cookies, and shrimp platters.
Everything was first class and very fresh. Always a good note when you are asked over and over…“where did you get the food”?
Nobody wants to spend the day and a half before the party chopping & cutting the food for the party and then trying to find the room in the fridge to keep everything fresh.
An hour before the guests arrive I picked up all this food, simple and easy.
Everyone wants the best when you invite your friends (30) to your house for a cocktail party. If that’s the way you are thinking, call Corbin, tell him Phil sent you. Can’t miss.

I’ve shopped at market of choice a few times. It’s like an overpriced new seasons.
I’m Unilocaling not over my shopping experience but over the way the staff handle their hiring of people with disabilities. I work with this population and today my assistant called to see if they were hiring. The hiring manager told my assistant that a job coach (me) was not allowed to sit in on the job interview.
This is not correct. Under the Americans with Disabilities act it is a reasonable accommodation for me to sit in on job interviews. If market of choice has questions about reasonable accommodations and job interviews they should contact

I will be contacting their corporate offices in Eugene as well in the morning. I won’t be shopping here or at any of their locations until they update their hiring managers with this information and retrain them on what is and what is not a reasonable accommodation.

I was a little overwhelmed when visiting here a couple of weeks ago. At first, I felt like the country mouse who tumbled off the turnip truck just before visiting the big city mouse, but I reminded myself that I shopped often enough at New Seasons, Whole Foods, and even Zupans, but nonetheless I was truly and well wowed. I couldn’t talk for awhile once I got back to the office I worked at that day, but that affliction was soon overcome and then I couldn’t stop talking about it. Fortunately, my co-​worker was just as wowed as I was by Market of Choice and was kind enough to listen to me and even nodded enthusiastically.
I wish I’d had more time. I came to have lunch because I worked right across the street from the market, but dearly wanted to stay and play; that will have to be for another day. I had an excellent stir fry of chicken, veggies, mushrooms, and noodle a la Chang’s Mongolian Grill. Very, very tasty and reasonably priced. Some things I remember are a very cool coffee/​tea shop, friendly staff, excellent service, and everything a size or two bigger than say New Seasons and much shininess and sparkliness and cleanliness. Most of the rest of the visit is a blur.
If I ever make it to one one of the Unilocal events, probably best not to mention it because you will see my eyes light up, possibly roll around like marbles in my head, and my mouth start to move. Really you don’t want to listen to me flap on about Market of Choice, you want to have a good time at the event, but do come here and visit. I have to return simply to learn put a few complete sentences together about this great market.

Been buying birthday cakes at MoC for 20 years, since we lived in Eugene. This new store is pretty, with great selection but, I am not happy. For a $ 30 bday cake, could they spare a flower or a balloon?
The cake tasted good. The service I got there was terrible. One over worked baker, at rush hour with a packed store. Then she wouldn’t give me the cake o continue shopping, but she had other customers waiting! I wasn’t there to steal the cake!
I’m not going back. Why would I with more than one New Seasons closer to my house? And I just had a bite of their white chocolate raspberry cake… delicious and served with lots of smiles. And decorations.

After researching local bakeries in the Portland Metro area, I had almost given up due to the ridiculous prices that I’ve encountered for mini cupcakes. Many places were charging upwards of $ 2.00 per mini cupcake which I find absurd despite the ingredients. I was on Unilocal of course during the research and never crossed my mind that Market of Choice would make mini cupcakes for events, little did I know I was wrong. I called up the bakery and found out mini cupcakes are only $.69 which caught me by surprise. I immediately placed my order for 30 mini red velvet cupcakes. I then called back a few days later to add 30 lemon cupcakes.
I picked up the cupcakes on May 17 promptly at 10 am. As I looked in the box, I noticed the cupcakes were bigger than the average mini cupcakes. I knew at that point, I had the best deal in town. The lady who handed me the cupcakes provided sprinkles for free.
I cannot thank you enough for Market of Choice for having the best deal, cupcakes were moist and tasty and most of all the great service that I received. I will be back for more baked goods.

I was so excited when I heard the news of the new MoC coming to my neighborhood! Oh happy day!
Now, mind you, almost all of this excitement is based around one glorious fact: I can now buy Mama Leone’s soup without having to drive to the MoC miles away, on that hill, with the hard to access parking lot.
Besides that, which truly is an increase in my quality of life, this place is beautiful. Stacks of meticulously organized, organic produce. An impressive bulk liquids dispenser. A magnificent wine and beer section.
Also, conveniently right next door to the new Pharmaca store.
One thing… I ordered a cappuccino here one morning. I have to say they were pretty darn slow about the whole process, from ordering to producing the drink. Could have been on time for class had the process been a bit faster. Cappuccino was decent… nothing to specifically come back for.
I really, truly appreciate that they print their receipts on BPA-​free paper. Thank you!
Besides all these wonders of MoC, I’m deeply loyal to New Seasons. I can’t see myself being swayed anytime soon, but I will appreciate my occasional trips over here.

This is my new favorite go to for healthy food. Organic and local are building blocks, and they are service oriented as well as small vendor friendly.
I like stopping by for fresh juices. Much better/​fresher than Jamba, and at better prices. The meat selection is equally impressive, as long as you get over the price hurdle… I’ve come to the realization that it’s worth paying more for organic.
The checkers are super friendly, and the store is new and sparkly…
And then there is the magic wheel of gelato…

The opening of this place has vastly expanded my lunch options. I work in one of the buildings at the top of the hill on Barnes. We have been watching the development in this area for a few years and we all hoped that a place with good food would open up. Hallelujah! It happened.
I have not even explored the entire store. I have heard of all the wonderful things it has. It looks like a spiffy, New Seasons-​like store but it offers non-​organic products, the kind that you see in your local not-​another-​New-​Seasons kind of store. I appreciate that. I waited a week before venturing over here. I have gotten as far as the sushi and over to the cold medicine aisle. That’s only a small section of the store.
The first time I walked in, I have to admit, I was overwhelmed. To the left is a nice dining area with a fireplace and you come upon the espresso and smoothie station. In the same corner is a wheel of gelato of which the attendant is happy to give you samples. The employees are friendly. They smile. It’s like they enjoy being there which adds to the whole shopping/​dining experience.
There is your usual hot deli foods and bakery with all these delicious looking cakes, pastries, and all sort of delicious goodness. Breads, prepackaged food, a hot food buffet table of sorts with a rotating menu. One day its Asian, another day its BBQ or Italian. There is a salad bar, antipasta and olive bar, cheese, wok station (think Mongolian Grill), burrito/​taco station, make-​your-​own-​sandwich station. Towards the way back is a view of the tap with local beers and brews. Floor to ceiling wine selection.
It’s the best place ever. Go grocery shop, grab lunch or dinner, and get a growler filled (or enjoy a brew while shopping). How awesome is that!

Place is super clean and polished. feels open and airy, but still warm. If it’s not warm enough for you, there’s literally a fire place in one of the corners. No, seriously, there’s a fireplace. No, seriously. Seriously.
Some of the prices are a bit irregular, as if they are capitalizing on the other similar modeled grocery stores being 5 miles away in any given direction. There’s a particular brand of jelly that I’ve grown fond of for it’s lack of hfcs, yet it’s more than a dollar than what i’m used to paying at Natural Grocers. But again, they are 5 miles away.
Some of the floor layout is a bit chaotic in the hot food section. You can grab some ready-​to-​eat meals over in the cafeteria section but the way everything is laid out leaves you wondering where to put your cart and wanting to tell other people where they can stick theirs. But again, a quart of house-​made soup for nearly 10 bucks feels a bit steep to me.
Some things that I really appreciate: Growler bar, across the street from my house. (If I was Tom Brady I could hit their back window from my balcony if I was throwing a deflated football.) Frozen GMO-​free-​verified vegetables like heirloom cauliflower and cubed sweet potatoes for 2 bucks! A healthy produce section with good looking well-​kept produce. (some places it seems like it’s been on the shelf or in a truck too long). Staff is pretty up-​tempo. None of them will leave my kid alone despite declining all offers to let them babysit while I shop.
The clean and warm atmosphere, product selection, hospitable staff and convenient location will keep me coming back. Sadly, the prices will keep me from checking off another stop on my list of errands to run when it comes to shopping reasonably on a budget.

Where to start, maybe a disclaimer, it just opened today so things could change a bit (hopefully the crowds will thin a bit), also I really didn’t need anything but I was ahead of schedule and had some time to kill… and I was driving past so…
That said the store is very nice and everything looked like it was ready to have its picture taken. While the store had all the usual grocery store items it had lots more ready to eat items and felt like a higher end specialty market.
Stand outs:
The sample of fresh squeezed orange juice was delicious.
They have a beer station.
Lots of ready to eat foods from Pizza to Panini, to whole roasted chicken and soups.
The cakes were decorated amazingly for a grocery store.
Both prices and quality seemed to be a bit higher then my usual grocery stops.
Not just fresh ground peanut butter but lots of other nuts also.
That said I will be back once the crowds thin a bit. I may raise the score to five stars later but they haven’t had time to earn the fifth star yet.
Also I am looking forward to when more of the shops in the developement open. It looks like it will be nice,

This is a big beautiful store. At four o ‘clock the place was busy. Lots of happy wet people were clogging up the wine bar, pizza area, and bakery. There was a fireplace with tables near it for supping, or sipping. I spied an espresso bar too.
I went in tonight with a short list just to get a look and breathe in the happiness of a new place to shop. Everything in here is bright and shiny new. There is lots of opportunity to spend money on tempting desserts and prepared goodies.
There’s a good balance of organic and non organic, healthy and not so healthy, which I expect from them. Workers are friendly and helpful.
There is a spiffy gelato freezer that spins around tempting passers by with several frozen delights. It’s very cool.
In passing I saw fancy soap by the pound or ounce which you can slice yourself! I also saw gifty stuff and pretty flowers. The produce section was very nice. I bought a bag of organic rainbow baby carrots for $ 2.49. Cool.
There are expensive items, but like all my favorite stores you just look for the sale tags and specials, the store brands over others. I like the focus on local companies. So I saw Daves Killer whole wheat bread for more than $ 4 a loaf, but there was Franz 100% whole wheat bread for $ 2.50. You just gotta be a good shopper.
They had umpqua peppermint stick ice cream for $ 3.99. Oh happy day.
My daughter and I have been craving key lime pie so I splurged on key lime tarts for $ 4.99 each. Adorable.
Im going back and will dutifully report again but so far, really really good. Go check it out.
