It just so happens I was at the Portland Soup Company cart earlier when two women mentioned that I also had to try the food at Pastrami on Rye. They were fond of the grilled cheese at this cart, but wait… what was that I saw? Reubens? Pastrami? Jalapeño mac and cheese? Good grief, I’m sold. I ordered half a pastrami sandwich on marbled rye(because well, the name of the cart is Pastrami on Rye) and a side order of their jalapeño gruyère mac and cheese($ 5.50). FYI, Pastrami on Rye has five types of rye bread to choose from. I received my food in a paper bag with the cart logo on it! Cool beans man… The bread was beautifully toasted, and the sauerkraut did not overwhelm my palate. I find marbled rye very appealing in appearance. The pastrami was the star, a mini explosion of black peppercorn power with the perfect savory, salty pastrami. The sandwich had deli mustard in there… yes! Gotta have the deli mustard! I could easily eat that sandwich every day if I wanted to. The jalapeño mac and cheese was also quite successful. A nice ratio of macaroni to cheese here with the pasta right around al dente. I found the gruyère a bit milder in flavor, making me think it was a «younger» cheese that promotes more creaminess and nutty tones. The dish screamed comfort food all around. The jalapeño livened the dish up(in color and taste) and contributed the texture contrasts I crave. Long story short, I’m a big fan of Pastrami on Rye, and one day, I plan to return for more! Check this place out ASAP!

Wow. the Reuben was amazing. The sauerkraut and dressing pair perfectly with the pastrami. It’s that melt in your mouth goodness. Perfect for this fall day. Portions are large also — heaping amounts of good quality pastrami(except that it’s so good I could easily go for another one). One of the best in Portland!

I took a bit of a walk today to get to this place. I’m a fan of pastrami and needed a new example of what PDX has to offer. I’ll say, the walk was totally worth it. I was pretty hungry so I got the«Mount Sanai» which is essentially the Rueben with pastrami ‘piled high’. The standard sandwich comes for about 5 bucks and the Sanai is $ 8.50. It was worth every extra penny. The kraut was zippy, tangy, and good. The pastrami was perfectly cooked and was literally piled on. The cheese melted wonderfully and topped with a very tasty Russian dressing. I ordered mine on Russian rye which finished off the great sandwich. Definitely will recommend folks check this place out. Going to have to go back and try the matzo ball soup sometime as well.

A fine Reuben. But for a place that specializes in Reuben sandwiches, I expected more. I paid 50 cents for a pickle on the side, and it was only a quarter pickle. Really, guys? OK this is a pretty Jewtastic post, but I’m sticking to it.

Excellent Sandwich! I have been there twice now and just ordered the pastrami on rye(5.25). .50 more for chips and a pickle. They have a great selection of breads to choose from. I plan on trying the reuben in the near future! Overall a perfect size sandwich and very good quality ingredients!

…I had been needing this place, and when it came I was headed there as soon as possible, didn’t disappoint me at all, and as time has gone on they have only gotten better, more selections and more meat from what I can tell, I guess it just varies, its not a chain where they weigh the meat or have it prepackaged, its just an old teardrop style camp trailer painted a strange epoxy green color with a WA license plate but none of that matters, something comfortable about seeing the older gentelman working there, I guess he reminds me of my grandpa and let me tell you thats a good thing, have I mentioned the food at all? Corned beef, turkey and on and on, they got matzo ball soup sometimes and apparently some delicious cookies, but I’m there for the pastrami on rye! One of the best food cart areas too for me since I’m always in my truck so its easily accessible, might have to run over some punk ass college students that think they own the streets(i’minmytruckandiwillcomewithinabouttwoinchesfromyouandscareyourrichbitchass) but other than that its about as perfect gets in this slowly getting worse lifetime of mine.

I don’t like Ruebens. I could eat 3 Pastrami on Rye Ruebens. I also appreciate the ability to select just how«rye» I’m feeling on any given day.

3 stars is a good rating and I first punched 4 stars, but then I started to think about their consistency, and I reduced to three stars… Here’s the review. The meats, cheese, and the sauerkraut are all of good quality. I have to run into a chunk of fat on the meats. The sauerkraut is mild, flavorful, and delicious. The breads are all very excellent. The reason I didn’t give four stars is because a Reuben should be served on grilled bread. Twice now, I’ve gotten a Reuben and the bread wasn’t grilled enough to hold the sandwich together and the bread became soggy. I liked it, even when it was soggy, but I’d rather have a sandwich hold together properly.

$ 5.75 for a pastrami on rye with kraut and mustard? No joke. I thought«there is no way that this could be any good. There’s a skinny little Asian hipster girl making the sandwiches.» Well, she showed me a thing. This is a really good sandwich for $ 5.75. I’ll be back to try matzo ball soup.

Very very good ruben! The pastrami was nice and seasoned. The rye bread was delicious. I can’t wait to try their soup on a cold day.

These guys know how to make a sandwich. Warm sauerkraut, mustard, and LOTS of meat. The reuben is good, but the cart’s namesake is what I keep coming back for– the perfect hot sandwich, for less than $ 5. During the warmer months you can get a 50 cent Arnold Palmer; when its cold out there’s hot spiced cider, and the matzoh ball soup smells tantalizing. You also get your choice of rye breads– I recommend the Russian dark rye, which is so dark it looks more like a slice of chocolate cake than a sandwich bread.

This place serves clam chowder and pizza pockets. They serve salad with some cheese. They provide napkins and also sell beverages. You can order chips to eat with your meal. You can tap out a beat on the counter while you wait. You can kneel in prayer while you wait. It’s a place you might want to try if you’re in the mood for it.

Today was Pastrami on Rye day for lunch and boy was it worth it. The menu is your basic Jewish deli complete with Ruebens, Pastrami, and even a Matzo ball soup with Challah special that I’d like to try next time. The bread is what sold me. You can choose between several varieties of bakery fresh Rye, Caraway Rye, Marlbed Rye, and sourdough. I ordered the Pastrami. It is a ¼lb of Pastrami smothered with sauerkraut, spicy brown mustard, slapped between two yummy slices of perfectly toasted marbled rye. Just what my savory tooth was craving! The older gentleman working the cart was extremely friendly and the service was quick. Can’t say the same for the other food carts on the 4th and College block. They also have a wicked good brownie. No. Seriously. That’s its name. Wicked Good Brownie and it is wicked good. If you’re looking for a good sammie at the PSU carts you’ve gotta try Pastrami on Rye.

This is a good NYC style Pastrami. And at $ 5.75 a fair price. A heads up though. They put sauerkraut on every sammy, even a mustard only sammy. It’s a NYC thing, I forgot my bad. My girl got the full blown Reuben, and she had Mmmmm written all over her face. I Will be back soon on a Wed, that’s Matzo ball soup day if its not to hot out. Bookmark this one, and get here soon !

Sweet, a new cart in my hood! Welcome, Pastrami on Rye, to the land of hungry students and dazed office workers, aka the PSU Cart Pod. The reuben is my favorite so far from what i’ve tried. Huge gob of nicely spice-crusted, smoky pastrami with sauerkraut, homemade thousand island dressing and melted swiss on toasted rye(actually, i had it on white). 5.75, with a pickle or chips for .50 extra. Other menu items include pastrami on rye(shocker!), three cheese grilled cheese, matzo ball soup, and a veggie reuben. Homemade iced tea and lemonade are 50 cents. Pastrami on Rye fills a void in this cart pod(and my stomach) ever since the philly cheese steak cart abandoned us earlier this year. Meaty salty warm sandwich lovers all over the PSU area rejoice!
