I should have gone with my gut reaction when I walked in the store and just left. It’s like something you’d see in a Coen Brothers movie. Tip jar for Jesus, a cross on the eyeglass lens of the owner, and much more. But I didn’t leave soon enough, and here’s my experience: I took my Oris watch into Queen of Diamonds Jewelry on November 11 for an estimate to repair the skipping when I wound it. The watch still worked OK, but there was obviously a gear in need of repair. I received an estimate by phone of $ 240 on December 18. I was told the workmanship would be warranted for 2 years. I gave my verbal OK to fix the watch. On December 28, I picked up the watch. Just after I could feel the winding movement was fixed, I was given a bill for $ 240, and handed the owner my debit card. About 10 seconds after I input my pin to approve the purchase, I shook the watch to hear it winding(it’s an automatic watch.) I called attention to the owner of the rattle inside the watch that I’d never heard in my 15 years of ownership. The owner took the watch, shook it, and agreed that it wasn’t right. I asked him to please reverse the charges on the watch until it was fixed, and asked him again about his warranty. «One year.»(This is contrary to the two years he told me on the phone.) I called this to his attention and he didn’t say a word. He took my debit card and proceeded to try to run it through his credit card terminal After 10 minutes, he returned to show me a receipt that said«No refund allowed.» I asked if he could give me cash instead. He refused. I pointed out that if he was running a card through for a credit back to me, that was a clear indication that he agreed to refund the money. Now he was citing what the credit card machine was spitting back as «the policy.» «Then why did you try to run it if that’s your policy?» He responded, «You see, it says right there. No refund allowed.» Now I was running late to an appointment. He said he would keep the watch, and the money, and repair the watch. I asked how long that would take. «ASAP,» he said. I left. Upon thinking about what had transpired, my feeling was that if he could have handed me the watch with that obvious rattle, thinking it was repaired, I didn’t want him doing any further work on my valuable watch. Further, the fact that he wouldn’t give me my money back until the new repair was made didn’t sit well with me, nor did his ambiguous explanations about no refund being allowed. I wanted my money back. Two hours later I returned and said that I’d like to get my watch back to have it repaired elsewhere. He refused and said that couldn’t be done. Realizing now that my valuable watch was being held against my will, I made the owner an offer: Return the watch, and just charge me half the $ 240, and we would call the transaction complete. He said he couldn’t do that; that he would fix the watch. I told him that’s not what I wanted – that I wanted my watch back now, and asked him what he suggested with that being the desire of his customer(who had already paid him). He accused me of arguing, and he was going to terminate dealing with me! Nice. At that point, now realizing that he wasn’t going to give me my watch, I thought I would deal with the bank later, and I simply said, «You have my $ 240.00. I’ve paid that. Now give me back my watch.» He refused, now accusing me of raising my voice, at which point he said, «if you’re going to yell, you can just leave my store and we’re done. I implored him once more to return my watch that was paid for. He refused. I then told him I was going to call the police, and went to my car to get my phone. When I returned, I hear this: «I can’t give you back your watch. I mailed it out this morning»(I was there at 11:30 and returned at 1:30). My response to that was, «oh, now your story is that you mailed it out? Where? Did you want to show me that postal receipt or show the police officer when he arrives?» He began yelling at me that I was being disrespectful. I sat and stared at him. Eventually he walked back into his shop and MAGICALLY returned with the package that contained my watch. Imagine that! He’s a magician. He then said in order to «make sure all is right, I need your credit card again,» to which I responded, «For what? You couldn’t get it to go through for a refund before, and now you’re going to do what with it? «I need your credit card again to make sure all is correct.» «For a refund?» I asked. «No, to make sure it’s correct.» At that, I looked down, saw my watch in the package on the counter in front of me within my reach, grabbed it, and said, «Bye.» And left the store. As I drove away, he came out shaking his finger at me. Fun! SAVEYOURSELFFROMCRAPLIKETHIS. TAKEYOURWATCHTOANAUTHORIZEDDEALER. MYMISTAKEISYOURLESSON!

Queen of Diamonds is my locally owned and operated jewelry store located in the heart of Hillsdale, Oregon. It has been in business for over twenty years and they have a wide selection of jewelry from vintage heirloom estate to current trends. They also repair jewelry, watches, batteries, and heirloom pieces. Many neighbors and I have stopped in to buy a new piece of jewelry, had a repair done, or had a watch battery replaced and we always leave smiling with a rose in our hands. They are always very friendly to us and it’s a breath of fresh air going there versus a big box jewelry store and more often than not they call us by name and always treat us like family. I would recommend Queen of Diamonds for people who want this kind of personal attention and also supports local community-based businesses like this one – something which seems to be becoming a relic nowadays.

I love this place! I don’t know what the other reviewers are talking about. This man is an INDEPENDENT businessman, number one. Two, he has been here for 20 years. He is friendly and helpful. I bought my husband a gold watch there for his birthday, and the owner let me buy it on layaway over several months. When I picked up the watch, he handed me a rose. Be careful what you say about businesses that have a hard time hanging on being independent. Chains are everywhere. If you want quirky, cool businesses to be in your town, shop at those businesses.

I live in the area where Queen of Diamonds has been in business for over 20 years. I don’t recognize the descriptions of the other reviewers here. I really rely on Unilocal for recommendations but I have been taking my jewelry for repair here for 10 years now and have only the most wonderful things to say about this business. I recommend it to all my friends. Here is one of the rare jewelry stores owned by an African-American and people are going out of their way to tear the guy down. Yes, he is a Christian, but it might be a cultural thing for him to be so out there about it. Corporations own most of the jewelry stores around, there are few small privately owned shops where one can take antique heirloom jewelry and get it repaired. I have been very satisfied with this jeweler. I recommend him to everyone. I love his quirkiness and I love that he blesses me when I leave. I don’t care how people unify with the Divine, or what name they call their god, wherever I am in the world I receive blessings and prayers gratefully and honor all paths. I bought a gold and green sapphire ring from him recently for my daughter’s 20th birthday and it was really reasonably priced. I trust his expertise and the quality of what he sells. He is probably struggling to keep open as so many shops in the area are closing one by one due to the banksters not lending, and the onslaught of corporate takeover of commerce. I for one try to buy local and I love the Queen of Diamonds store as an iconic example of what local Portland has to offer. I am sorry for the problems others have had, again, that has not been my experience.

I got a battery replaced here awhile back; I remembered because I currently need another battery replaced and am trying to find a good place to take it. Not only was the owner extremely rude, but my watch was just as broken when I got it back as it was before, even though he said he changed the battery and charged me for it. It was not even worth going back and dealing with him again, but seriously this guy should be out of business. Majorly shady, and completely ungrateful for patronage.

Shady business, bad service. I put some jewelry on consignment here about a year ago. Right off the bat the jeweler made me feel like I was putting him out in some way. After a month or so a few pieces sold, so when I showed up to get my check I noticed that he had one of my items listed at 3 times the amount I had listed! I let him know this and he brushed it off, and said it must have been put in the wrong place. I didn’t hear back for over 8 months. So when I stopped in again, asking if any of my items had sold. He asked if he had called me… I said no. His response; «Well, then they didn’t sell.» However, one had, because it was not in the case. After checking the paperwork, he confirmed this with not so much as an apology. And guess what, that ring was one again listed at 3 times the listed price. Had he had sold it at that price, I would have never known, and would have been completely ripped off. I pulled the rest of my jewelry.

My wife paid quite a bit of money to have an old watch of mine repaired. It’s a swiss«automatic»(self-winding). she had to wait a long time to get it back, when she did, the second hand doesn’t work at all, and the watch NEVER stops(which it should). I have to send it to the manufacturer now. I think he put a casio movement inside this antique. or something.

I’m not sure I’d buy any jewelry here(not my style) but quick service and a very reasonable $ 9 for a watch battery. I prefer to support independent businesses so this is where I’ll spend my $$$ on jewelry repairs.

I had the batteries replaced in two watches and one watch band refitted. The prices were high and it’s only because I was in a hurry that I put up with that. The jewelry, which I looked at while i waited was fuggly. But here’s the biggest thing: I don’t really like a bunch of «Jesus Loves You» signs hanging in a business, and I really don’t like listening to Christian radio while I’m in a business, but what’s really unprofessional is when I’m leaving and I’m requested to «Have a Blessed day!» Have a Blessed day!
