We stopped in this beautiful summer morning for«Rookie Rock» a drop– in class for kids 0 – 7. My preschooler adored this creative music time with Ms. Tyleena — Fairy Funkmother. A variety of musical instruments are provided in a bright and clean space. Ms. Tyleena was engaging, patient, and seemed to be genuinely enjoying herself. I’d highly recommend this drop-in class, and will be back again soon!

I have been studying ukulele at Sound Roots School of Modern Music in Portland, Oregon for approximately 4 months. My talented and intuitive instructor has a remarkable calming teaching style that has demonstrated to me to be very effective for my learning process. There is a strong sense of music history emanating from the walls of this fascinating building on N. Williams Ave. The staff vibe and the design & architecture of the school, always makes for very creative and inspiring visits. I leave every week looking forward to my next class. If you want to learn how to play an instrument or strengthen your musical skills, I highly recommend Sound Roots School of Modern Music. –Marcine

I’ve never taken guitar lessons in my life, so I have nothing to compare them to… But, I have been playing by myself for about 10 years, and learned more in 4 lessons than in that 10 years. Im going to keep going with it. I like the space, people are nice, overall a great experience…

This is a great place to learn a new instrument. They have a knowledgeable staff that pay attention to your needs and goals. I really like their modern music approach they apply to their lessons. You dictate the kind of music you want to learn and they’ll modify the class so it covers what you want to learn. I’ve been taking taking piano lessons for more than a month and I have learned tons in just 5 lessons. I would recommend it to anyone that wants to pick up a new instrument or just fine tune their musical skills.

We recently held my son’s third birthday party at Sound Roots. We picked the place based on tons of positive comments we read from an article on where to have kid’s birthday parties in Portland from the Urban Mamas website. Well, people were right. This is a really good place. Excellent staff and the kids(mostly toddlers) LOVED the music session that took place during the party led by local children’s musician Moe Phillips. Very reasonably priced as well. Sound Roots made it very easy and all around, they are a very professional and friendly group. Highly recommend to other parents looking for a neat, out of the norm spot to have a special birthday for your little one.

What do you do with an energetic 8 year old over summer break? Send him to Rock Band Camp at Sound Roots! Even if he doesn’t play an instrument(yet). My son has always been interested in music and wanted to learn the electric guitar. He is also a bit shy until you get to know him, so he was really worried about going to a camp where there would be older kids and kids with presumably lots more experience playing an instrument. We signed him up anyway and I’m so glad we did! He had such a blast that he wanted to do it a second time over the summer. The staff is incredibly knowledgeable, friendly, and great with kids of all ages. The students are challenged and encouraged to try new things, take risks, and embrace their«rock star.» From my perspective every kid there had an amazing experience. Watching the performances at the end of the week(for both sessions my son attended) was great! Of course skill ranges varied, but everyone was having a great time and had clearly grown during the week. My son decided he’d rather focus on piano than electric guitar and now has a first hand experience of what it is like to get up in front of an audience and perform. He is not only more aware of what it takes to learn an instrument, he has gained some self-confidence that I didn’t see from him earlier. I highly recommend this program. Ethan will be taking piano lessons there at some point this year and I look forward to seeing what that experience is like for him.
