Was so sad to read that SuperDog is saying farewell to Downtown Portland. I was a fan of SuperDog! Mmm… the Double Smokie! All of their sausages had no MSG& no nitrates — awesome! I read this online today: «It is with heavy hearts that we announce the closing of SuperDog, in downtown Portland. SuperDog unfortunately was not able to weather the storm of the financial crisis, the Park location will close on Friday 5/6, and the 6th Avenue location will close on Friday 5⁄27. We are extremely grateful for the efforts of our talented staff, Dianna, Molly, and Palmer. A final thank you to the wonderful Portland community who supported us for so many years. Have no fear if you crave a SuperDog, you will still see us at various Portland events — Sunday Parkways, Dragon Boat race… etc. Be friend us on facebook superdogpdx or follow us on twitter superdogpdx for all our news and up coming events. Come by and say hello at the Park location today, or 6th ave location for the rest of May. We hope to see you and say farewell before closing. Thank you again. »

This is right off the PSU campus, and they serve a large variety of sausages. Also very good sausages. It’s a little expensive but the dogs are of good quality, and they offer good meal deals. I would definitely go again for a good hot dog.

Superdog, I love these guys, and don’t get into one of their shops nearly often enough. I was wandering around downtown today looking for a corned beef sandwich, and came up bupkis, so I threw in the towel(used to soak up the mega gallons of rain that fell today), and popped into Superdog, the one next to McDonald’s «homeless headquarters.» Wasn’t in the mood for a combo, so doubled up my order to two dogs, asked for the double smoke(a beef and pork sausage, slight spice), and a Zweigle’sWhite Hot(which aren’t ‘hot’, btw). Zweigle’s has been selling these pups out of HQ in Rochester, NY, since the beginning of time. I first learned of them when my strict vegetarian girlfriend(I know) and I stayed with her ma in upstate New York, and as a surprise for me, she got some Zweigle’s and even ate one with me. Haven’t seen them(or her) since, glad that Superdog has them. They are slightly more flavorful than a brat, but resemble them in appearance. The ‘double smoke’ is an east coast favorite, you’ll find them on many street corners in the large urban areas. You’ll also find«half-smokes» on nearly every corner of DC. It will come as a surprise to you(or not) that I over ordered. The upside? I got me some big sausages waiting in the icebox for another time.

Sometimes I am lazy. Actually quite often I am lazy. But not always when it comes to lunch. Today was one of those days, I was lazy. I had heard that the Superdog had good grilled cheese sandwiches and soup. Not true today. Maybe I should have kept with their namesake. But the sandwich was dry– not cheesy enough for Portland standards. The soup was oily… lesson learned.

I spent my afternoon walking around SW Portland searching for decent apartments to move to. After checking out some apartments near PSU, I was pretty hungry and since I had seen SuperDog before, I knew I wanted to go here today. I ordered up a plain beef dog on a white bun and Eddie ordered the mildly spicy Mt. Saint Helen Volcano dog. I was impressed with their low prices — especially for beer. Our Lucky Labrador Pale Ale & Anchor Steam Liberty were just $ 3.75 each. They’re even cheaper during«Thirst Thursdays.» My dog was cooked very well. Very hot and juicy when it came to my table. And the bun was amazing! I have never had such a great hot dog bun in my life. I’m not sure what kind of bread or roll this was for certain, but it was hand-cut when I placed my order. And it was delicious. Perfectly chewy to go with the meat. Not sure what more you could possibly want from a small hot dog shop. They are certainly doing things right over here. Maybe someday I’ll be adventurous enough to try one of their bird or combo meat sausages…

Starting with the service. The guy working was very nice and in fact even let me sample the chili before ordering so A+ from that perspective. Finding a great all beef chili is difficult and SuperDog falls short here. The chili is ‘decent’ but lacks a little bit of flavor and texture. I ordered up an all beef Nathan’s with the beef chili on it to go. It’s only a 2 block jaunt back to the office so the dog was bagged for all of 3 – 4 minutes. Positive points for keeping the chili in a separate container(to keep the bun from getting soggy). Negative points for the fact that everything was only lukewarm at best when I served it up back at work. All in all, not a bad dog but there is room for some improvement. I would eat here again but wouldn’t say I’m a SuperDog convert just yet.

GREAT hot dogs! What a great hot dog place–«just the facts mam» It’s dogs, dogs, dogs here, and they are good! The prices are right, the hot dogs are superb, and they have micro-brew beers for 3.75 $ The staff is super nice– the guy took the time to tell me about the hot dog I ordered and the specifics of the beer he cooked it in… Also, let me tell you about the buns! They are kind of a cross between a traditional hot dog bun and a bagel? Just a little bit of chewiness yet not real heavy– they are good! I ordered a «Portland Original» Local favorite Zenner’s double smokie cooked in local micro-brew beer 4.70 $ The dog was great– nice smokie flavor, little tang from the beer, and a nice snap when I chomped it!

I’ve stayed away from hot dogs for way to long not realizing how much they have evolved over the years. Now it has become one of those«favorite places» to hit on my through downtown. What I love about it most is all the great choices of dogs they have(and they have alot including chicken, turkey even a veggie dog. And they’re so much healthier now too. I’m also a HUGE fan of the condiment bar which offers dill pickle relish, just that alone makes my mouth water. My favorite part about the condiment bar is I am in control of how much sour kraut I put on as well as the choices of 4 or 5 different mustards! It’s just good food without all the complications! The other great thing I love is their«house made soups and chili(a must have) espcially with the cold weather among us. Next time your in the park blocks area give them a try you can’t go wrong with the pricing either!

It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s a frog… It’s Superdog! This is one of the best hot dog places I have visited in any city, if not only for the taste and quality of the food, the righteousness of the microbrew beer, and the low low prices… the sheer variety of offerings will blow you away. Its bare bones exterior and interior might tempt you to walk on by — don’t. Inside you will find everything from a classic Brat, Polish, or Italian(this is starting to sounds like a bad joke), to an entire menu of «Bird Dogs»(chicken and turkey), to «Special Dogs» including CurryWurst and a true Chicago Dog, to «Style Dogs» including authentic Coney, Portland, Buffalo, and Southern. Vegetarians can rejoice in the classic Vege or Phony Island Dog, made with vegetarian chili, and there is a huge amount of toppings available to satisfy any craving or combination. I had the Zweigle’s White Hot dog — a lightly spiced pork & veal blend that was excellent with sweet/hot mustard and a cold Lucky Labrador beer on tap. The bun was lightly toasted — just enough for a crunchy/chewy texture. They also have different house-made soups every day and a Recession-Buster — $ 3.00 for a toasted bun with either pork baked beans or beef baked beans inside. Super-yummy, super-nice staff, super-cheap prices, and super-convenient location. Hungry? There is no need to fear, Superdog is here!

Went here and was not disappointed. They have a freakish number of sausages to choose from, and I was a bit stumped. I went with the White Hot(I never see them in NYC, but in Portland? Crazy times…) and got it Chicago style. The toppings were nice and fresh, the condiment bar huge, but the real stand out is the rolls. I don’t know where they get them, or if they make them, but they are tender and crispy without being hard to chew. The rolls really made the experience memorable. SuperDog also has a nice selection of beers. They had 5 or 6 on tap, and it included some nice local Portland ales. SuperDog is a ideal restaurant for a quick, delicious bite to eat with a laid back atmosphere. I am jealous of the PSU students who have this place right off campus.

How can a place solely devoted to the beauty and versatility of a hot dog NOT get five stars? Oh yeah, if it’s PukaDog in Waikiki. Fortunately, this place is not PukaDog Waikiki. I should have gone with my gut and gotten two dogs. I had the Italian superdog Portland-style — imagine a plethora of sauteed mushrooms, bell peppers, and onions blanketing a hot & ‘sweet’ Italian sausage sitting on a bed of swiss cheese in the softest bun possible. The bun alone gets five stars because it is baked fresh, and it sure as hell seems like it. My first bite –despite the biggest bite I could muster– could only get toppings and bun, but I was already satisfied! Seriously, just do it. By the end of my dog, I actually got sad I had none left to eat. Damn. Plus, the owner(?) was suuuuuper nice and very helpful. I could feel the love she put into assembling my hot dog. I think I’m going to open a Superdog in Hawaii and make it rich.

Just as good as the original but closer to downtown. A great place to get a hotdog a ton of different ways(from classic chili dog to southern style with coleslaw, to neon green Chicago relish to Portland style with grilled onions, mushrooms, green peppers and gooey parmesan cheese). Brought a coworker to lunch here today and we had a good time. She enjoyed her chilidog with cheddar cheese and onions. My husband loved that you could get blue cheese crumbles on a hotdog here. Where else can you get a filling satisfying lunch for around $ 6 to $ 8(if you want a drink or chips)? They have soup, pasta salad, coleslaw, cookies, brownies and more too. Also a huge big screen TV on the wall if you want to watch something while you eat. Love it! Eat in and chill out or take it to go. They accept major credit cards including American Express Nothing beats a good dog.
