This pet store is super sad. They have far too many animals, and many are poorly taken cared for. One of axotols had what looked like a fungal infection. I would not come here again, and I would not buy a pet from this shop.

The two reptile stores that I’ve been going to closed so I decided to check out this one. We have fish but our kids like reptiles. It’s disgusting. The staff are rude and they keep their snakes in these tiny little plastic containers and there are like 20+ baby bearded dragons in this little display. The worst part is they have live rodents. They make it seem like they are a «pet» store so they are being sold as pets but let’s face it, it’s so people can feed their snakes. The rats look mangy and unhealthy. None of the look like they can be someone’s «pet». I’m so sad the other excellent reptile stores have closed and this one remains.

The staff is usually welcoming and always is knowledgeable. Consistent quality and availability of feeder insects. They have an exceptional selection of Terrariums and substrate choices for them. I enjoy every visit and always leave wondering where to add an Axolotl habitat in my home!

I absolutely LOVE this store. I buy my Dubia roaches, crickets, mealworms, and waxworms here. The staff members make me feel very comfortable and they are knowledgable about reptiles. The feeder bugs are a decent price. This is my favorite reptile shop around here and I would 10⁄10 recommended stopping by.

The selection of snakes, hamsters, some neat reptiles. The right time of year they have turtles and tortoises. They have a great selection of habitats and supplies to get it outfitted. However while you’re at this store do not expect to get any service. Do not think an employee will ask can I help you? Can I answer any questions? I was in here for a ½ hour. I looked at the snakes, bearded dragons and chameleons for 10 min. Not once was I approached by an employee. I moved over to the fish department. An employee was feeding the fish I said do you have time for a few questions? She said «I guess». Well I proceeded to ask about 7 questions which each one was painful for her to answer. I’m sure there are some eager 20 years olds looking for jobs who are eager to offer customer service. Loose the poor Portland attitude. I ended up buying a $ 1.00 item. I only gave 3 stars for the selection.

Went here today for some pea puffers and had a really great experience. Puffers looked great, lady was super nice. She did on the spot looking up of info for us and offered to call us next week to let us know if the heater we need comes in.

I used to walk to the Tropical Hut in my youth over 25 years ago. This pet store, though modest in its size, still impresses me with the variety of animals that it offers the pet enthusiast.

This is the best store in the city of Portland for anyone interested, or deep into the reptile hobby. Their wide variety of Ball Python and Corn Snake morphs exceed any other store I’ve been to. Their reptile selection in general is amazing. They have incredible knowledge and clearly have a great deal of experience in the reptile trade. Cannot give this store enough stars!
They can get pretty busy on the weekends so I would recommend going in on a weekday.

This aquarium and «fish shop» only has one type of dry fish food? Hum. Also super rude, uninterested employees. I did get one of my goldfish here a year ago but her awesomeness is all her, not this stinky place.

I have been coming here ever since I adopted a sweet leopard gecko 2 years ago. Everyone there is so helpful and knowledgeable, especially Jodi. They always have the supplies I am looking for. Their animals are lively and healthy. I was just in this past weekend and took a walk through to see the critters, and even the snakes were out and about doing snake things! That never happens at pet stores! So kudos to the Tropical Hut for being a great neighborhood pet shop.

Only place nearby for cheap feeder rats for our Ball Python and we got a WONDERFUL Mexican Red Knee tarantula in good health (she has settled and is eating regularly and I believe she’s about to molt.) We plan to buy a scorpion as well, and possibly some frogs. No qualms about shopping here. The ladies we’ve dealt with here and knowledgeable, patient and friendly. Always a pleasure. Plus, the prices are great. One of the big box pet stores tried to sell me a piece of natural sponge about the size of my thumb with a couple of crummy seashells for $ 5. The lovely attendants at TH gave me a healthy chunk and a great, large seashell for a fraction of that cost (with purchase, I’m sure that helps.) p. s. this is a tropical pet store, not a place to buy fancy rats for pets. I understand that the employees and owners here aren’t terribly concerned with the rats as they’re meant to be food, not pets. Buy pet rats at a conventional pet store.

I like how they have soy-​free rat food and it’s not very expensive. The shop is clean, the animals look pretty happy. It’s not a mega-​superstore, so I feel good about supporting a local business. And the tortoises are super-​cute.
The only part I’m not a fan of is that they keep their rats (both the feeders and the fancy pet ones) on wood chip bedding. That’s not good for them! I can understand for the rats that are just waiting to become snake food, but for rats that you want to keep around for a while, wood chips have oils in them that are bad for their lungs. Either get nicer bedding or don’t carry rats! Rats aren’t tropical animals anyway.
Also, their parking lot is full of potholes. So watch out for that.

I agree with the Jan 2013 poster. Terrible initial experience!
I was in SE and wanted to find a few items for my fish tank, and Google search directed me to this place. As I walked in, I saw a girl at the register with short hair. I smiled and approached her. Was really confused and surprised when she rolled her eyes and looked away. I attempted to ask her if she could help me find tank products and she got a disgusted look on her face as if I was bothering her with my question. Very shocking to be treated this way!
An older woman then appeared (I’m guessing the owner?), she turned out to be very friendly and helpful. The weird thing is once this other lady showed up, the girl with the short hair pretended to be more friendly. Only somewhat. Like she was tolerating me. Probably just putting on a show for the owner?
All in all, I was truly bothered by this days later. Amazing that someone in customer service would be so rude. Wow. I won’t be coming back.

Yeah, let’s just say I’m never shopping here again. Why?
Their fish tanks were smothered in algae, they had axolotls housed together (NEVER a good idea), a poor selection of reptile vitamins (which the girl at the counter had no clue about), and the poor, poor tarantulas shoved in those TINY containers! The girl working seemed to be bothered when I asked her a question and was being rude to another customer. Won’t ever be returning.

I’m going to add to this later, but i just wanted to say that this place just saved my 55g community tank, with a $ 1.09 fix that i couldn’t even buy from them (household item).
I used to be a regular at The Wet Spot… but after their bad advice yesterday leading to 4 fish deaths in 24 hours, i will be a Tropical Hut Gal from here on out for any Fish Tank help!

One of the few places where I can find healthy handpicked earth worms for my turtles, and they will give me a discount on larger quantities. I am very thankful these guys are around!

As dog-​crazy as Portland is, our canine infatuation runs counter to the city’s weirdness-​preservation aesthetic. Everyone adores a cute puppy; it takes a unique kind of animal lover to shower the same affection upon a Madagascan hissing roach. Located five blocks from Rose City Reptiles, the Tropical Hut could be considered part of Southeast’s «alterna-​pets» district. Bigger in size and broader in scope than its tiny westward competitor, the store – which relocated from Gresham to Division in 1976 – sells not only snakes and turtles but fish (from common goldfish to bulbous black moors to glass catfish, whose skin is indeed translucent), rodents and, yes, even exotic roaches. It also carries aquariums, terrariums, food and accessories such as iguana harnesses, in case you know anyone who enjoys taking their lizard for a walk. And this being Portland, you probably do.

They have yummy doggie food (I know quality dog food when I taste it) in both canned and dry form. The only thing I’m really snobby about when it comes to pets is the fact that my dog is allergic to corn which is what comprises 90% of the doggie foods that are sold in most chain stores (and all super markets). I have to admit this was the last place that I imagined would carry what I needed — I believe the sign has «Aquarium» and «Fishes» on it so it looked like the kind of place that really «cool» people (people who buy snakes and lizards) go to. Low and behold they have food and treats Mr. Bode totally digs!
The store clerks also offer a club card so they can track what you purchase most often, and give you 1 free whatever after you purchase 10 whatevers.
My only warning would be to not stay and chit chat too long, as you will go home smelling like gerbil dandruff and turtle feces, with just a splash of Eau de Ferret.
