Have had breakfast there several times. Is becoming a habit. Mostly because everyone is so nice! The food is awesome and they are extremely accomindating to go off the menu requests. I usually have a high protein meal such as an omelette without taters or bread and get fruit and a salad. They don’t even wince and charge the same price. The people are super chill, is always a treat I look forward to. Also, we have always managed to get a seat on the weekends without waiting(except once)

There were a lots of pluses for this place so let’s start with the positive. Humble looking on the outside but bright and clean on the inside. The staff were friendly and attentive. The menu provides a lot of great options and the food came out quickly. A little too quickly. That’s where the cons come in. My partner ordered eggs over easy which were undercooked, with the egg whites still raw. The biscuits for the biscuits and gravy were under baked as well without the crispy golden crust. The bacon had been cooked previously so was chewy and cold. My meal was better. I ordered the pesto parmesan scramble with fried potatoes. The flavors were good, but the eggs were overcooked and brown. The mozzarella topping could have been better distributed throughout. The potatoes were sweet, crispy and delicious. Overall the food just didn’t live up to our expectations. I’d rather wait 5 – 10 more minutes for a well executed meal.

Sckavone’s is a delightful local spot to visit with friends or to drop in and have a quick, friendly meal. It populates a pretty corner, and a significant one too. It’s always comfortable and inviting though. The place is much more spacious inside that one realizes at first, so they can fit many inside. I get the impression that the menu has changed somewhat over the last few years, perhaps evolving a bit from greasy spoon to golden spoon, or somewhat in-between. I have only been to Sckavone’s a couple of times, but it left me more than satisfied each time. The steak they offer at dinner time is a great, juicy offering that would rival many a steakhouse. It was a pretty typical cut of steak, a nice NY strip. It was cooked exceptionally well, though, and that makes a world of difference. Lovely, comfy, and clean!

What took me so long to eat here? It’s right in my neighborhood and I have known about it forever. Four of us — one of whom is not an «adventurous» eater — decided to go there on a recent December weeknight about 5:30 for dinner. Our service was well-paced and flawless. Each meal — including the baked scampi, spinach ravioli, a cheeseburger and fries, and a beet salad — was a big hit! Rarely are places able to produce such even quality with such diverse dishes, and Sckavone’s delivers on all counts. Prices are tremendous given the quality and quantity… something I cannot say about so many of the newer places on SE Division west of Chavez. You can be sure I will be back a lot in 2016… for one thing, I am eager to try their house Meatloaf!

I’ve been driving by/walking pass this place for a couple of years now and still was not able to stop by to give this place a try until a few days ago. My gym is literally right across from this place, I finished my work out and was in need of food, mostly protein. As I left the gym, I scouted my options. It was either, tacos, burgers, pizza or thai food. Even though those did sound so delicious when you’re famish, I just wasn’t feeling like bombing my calorie intake after leaving the gym. So I read a few reviews and looked at the menu and I was sold. This place is your typical neighborhood diner, with the friendly staff and a menu filled with comfort food. The moment I walked in, I was greeted by the staff and was told to sit wherever. The place is decent in size and gets pretty busy on a weekend/dinner rush. I settled for the steak(PROTEIN), and asked to just get extra servings of whatever seasonal vegetables they had in place of the mashed potato. Service was quick, prompt, friendly and my glass of water was always full! The steak was great(I wasn’t really sure what cut it would be, so I should have probably ordered medium rare.), nevertheless it still was flavorful and cooked perfectly. The side dish of asparagus was seasone and cooked well. This place reminded me of Division growing up. This would be the perfect place where I would meet up with my high school friends, grab lunch before our next class starts. This place is very casual, nothing fancy. It’s a great place to have excellent conversations with friends or family. They are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. So if you happen to be down division and didnt’ feel like all those flashy restaurants surrounding the neighborhood is cutting it, I highly suggest giving this place a try.

Finally made it out to Division and 41st for some brunch. I had been wanting to come try since we heard ‘everything is made in house’. Upon arrival we were met by our host, the bartender, she was very friendly and attentive. We were almost immediately given free scones as an appetizer and they were great. Kinda tasted like a sugar cookie with bits of fruit. I ordered the chicken fried steak brunch and it was really good. The gravy was fantastic, the eggs were great, the potatoes were perfectly fried and finally somebody got the chicken fried steak gravy correct, finally. However, I’d like to challenge the notion that EVERYTHING was made in house. While the chicken fried steak was very good, one of the best I have had in Portland, it was still obviously straight out of a bag. Regardless, the food was really good, the location is close by and convenient, the service was attentive and friendly, Ill be back.

The food was standard diner food. I had their grilled chicken sandwich & hubby had an omlet, & both were pretty darn good. This place deserves 4 stars for their cozy ambience though. Big wooden booth & warm lights with photos hung all around from days gone-by. I wanted to bring a book & camp out! The server was very friendly & timely, so if you’d like a breakfast /lunch place without a 2– hour wait, give it a try!

My Partner-In-Dine(PID) and I ate at Sckavone’s Sunday evening. Neither of us had eaten here before. I had found a rating on Unilocal and we agreed to try it. We were both VERYPLEASED. It is a nice neighbor hood restaurant. Great for family, kids, couples, and friends. I had the House Smoked St. Louis Ribs«In our own sauce served with mashed potatoes, country gravy and fresh seasonal vegetables.» First, presentation was beautiful. The ribs were stacked one upon the other with the mashed potatoes(no garlic or anything fancy) to one side and a third of the plate filled with bright green asparagus spears. I asked for the gravy to be separate from the potatoes. Personal preference. The ribs were in a lightly sweet sauce, meaty and perfectly warm. The meat remained together yet, was easily pulled from the bone, lightly smoked delicious. There were about half a dozen large thickly meaty ribs. The mashed potatoes were just a little lumpy. Thereby, proving their real substance. Nothing added. Except the gravy if you want it on top. The gravy was EXCELLENT. It was thick and creamy, filled with flavor and sausage pieces. The asparagus were not too soft and tender and not too crisp. I found them to be perfect. In fact, I felt that way about the whole meal. While I was stuffed I was unable to resist a ridiculously thick and gooey flourless chocolate cake. I shared this with my PID and together we couldn’t finish it. It was excellent even the next day. My PID had the«Sckavone’s Meatloaf Seasoned ground beef and pork, sun dried tomato, fresh herbs, house made marinara, mashed potatoes and vegetables.» The portions were HUGE! Each of the two slices were approximately an inch thick and 3 or 4 slices long and two inches wide. She was unable to stop herself from eating the full first slice. The marinara was lightly applied. Just the right amount. Her mashed potatoes were impossible to resist. She was very happy with her vegetables. She remarked to me how lovely the combination of sautéed squash was. She did take home the remainder of her Meatloaf and veggies. The service was excellent. My water glass was constantly full. Which, is kind of amazing since, I drink a lot. And when I say«a lot» I mean«A LOT». I always have(not diabetic issue. Well, it wasn’t until a couple of years ago.) Our servers were easily accomodating and actually humorous. My PID and I agreed we would be returning sometime soon.

Really like this place. Never a wait, nice staff, good old comfort food and plenty of seating. Parking is easy too, and the only complaint I have is that the ambiance needs work. It has so much potential there for a really rad spot. Would love to see it blossom into a unique joint.

Excellent place with great atmosphere. The service was always spot on and the waitresses friendly and helpful. I had the pork tenderloin with asparagus. Both were cooked extremely well and delicious. Anytime I come back to the Portland area I will find the time to stop by Sckavones for an enjoyable experience.

Loved their scones that they had as an appetizer! I got their chicken and waffles which is something that I love! The chicken was absolutely amazing! The waffles where really dry though which was a huge let down. Everybody else had great food!

I post this with mixed feelings – do I rave about how much I love this place, or keep my reviewing nose to myself and hope it remains one of Portland’s best-kept comfort food secrets? Sigh… I guess I’ll share… it’s too good not to. Sckavone’s never fails to please! The meatloaf with its crown of marinara sauce and parmesan is the ultimate comfort meal, accompanied by some of the best fries in town, along with nicely grilled veggies for good measure. Just simple, good, satisfying food! Brunch is equally good, and worth it if only for the little scones that are served before your food comes out. Melt-in-your-mouth honey sweetness! I don’t know if I just happen to crave meatloaf at odd times, but it seems that whenever I go it’s rarely busy.(Even weekend brunch isn’t overwhelmed by nouveau, psuedo-Portlanders who believe their mere presence will lend hipster credibility to their chosen food habitat.) Service is always friendly, prompt, and never invasive. The atmosphere is laid-back, diner-ish and simple, open and airy. Add free wi-fi to that, and it’s a great spot for getting a little work done over a scrumptious lunch. As long as you all promise not to rush right over and overwhelm the place, I’ll post my review. And to the folks at Sckavone’s, please don’t change a thing! With all the developments going on in Portland these days, it’s comforting to know you’re here!

Sckavone’s is a handsome old diner with a large, diverse menu. I admire how everything seemed to be from scratch. That said, it needs a little more spice. I ordered the corned beef hash and eggs, and was impressed that, true to the waitress’s word, it was clearly homemade, rather than the nasty canned stuff so many other places will try to serve. Full of good-sized shreds of corned beef and cubes of potato, it looked inviting. The potatoes had absorbed just the right amount of grease, and the meat was tender and hearty. Unfortunately, it really needed more salt and onions. While they offered Cholula and Tabasco as options for spicing it up, I would have really preferred that it have been spiced in its marinade. Just dousing hash in hot sauce is a good way to get some bites that taste like nothing but sauce and some that are just as bland as before the sauce came to the table. The eggs I received were overcooked. While part of this I can blame on an error by my server(the receipt said that I’d ordered fried over hard, when in reality, I’d asked for mine poached medium), they weren’t even very good for eggs over hard. I like a fried-hard egg sometimes, but these weren’t just well-cooked, but dried out. While I didn’t taste my friend’s huevos rancheros, I noticed that his eggs(ordered over easy) looked to be more over medium. So perhaps the moral of the story is that one should order eggs at Sckavone’s a little less cooked than what one would normally get. Sckavone’s setup lends itself to many social scenarios. It’s got a bar-like counter, booths, outdoor picnic tables, and tables of varying size inside. You can order breakfast, lunch, dinner, or drinks. The dining room feels like something in between a diner, a soda fountain, and a bar. While such versatility can easily lead to a place being spread too thin, I get the sense that Sckavone’s has been around long enough to handle all of the above with sincere good effort. Even if that effort needs a little more spice a little less cooking-time, I still admire it. If I come here again, I’ll definitely go for something with more onions, peppers, and heat to it. I can tell that Sckavone’s puts care into their cooking, but that alone can’t overcome blandness. Expect another review sometime soon – I imagine that if I order a different dish, I may find something more representative of the place’s thoughtful attitude toward their food and customers.

Well, other reviews noted a wait time, and this IS true. Though I am only pointing it out to inform. Waits don’t bother me as long as it is worth it. It was worth it. My party and I went in Father’s Day afternoon and our wait was 25 min. We were definitely hungry when we sat down. I would say the ordering went quick and smooth. Our 1 child was entertained with coloring placemat and a provided etch a sketch! 4 dishes of breakfast were ALL superb. I had the Mediterranean omelette with potatoes. Delicious! It was a bit salty but that was about it. Coffee and scones were great!

The historic hall like interior is cool, if not austere, a shell of its former history as a neighborhood drug store/ice cream parlor, but still interesting and it feels, not charming, but throw back. I ordered an egg /sausage/potatoes dish that included back olives and it was really excellent. The server was attentive but not especially friendly and seemed deeply bored. Perhaps it’s unfair, but I expect friendly service at mom and pop type establishments. In fact, servers at Sheri’s are friendlier. Maybe its a «too cool for you» thing? All that said, I would go back based on the quality of the food.

Delicious scones are provided just as you sit, and they are extremely delicious covered in honey. I had their amazing eggs benedict, and my guy ordered the special for that day(meat egg scramble). Everything is decently priced except for the a la carte menu. The dishes come with very peppered potatoes. I have visited at least three times since we stay by SE Division on our overnights and have never had to wait in a line or at the front for a table. The waitresses we have encountered are all accommodating and kind. The parking lot is a bit small but I think that is because they get a lot of foot traffic. This is a great brunch spot!

Kitchen — 2 stars, table service and ambiance — 5 stars. I rounded down after reading other 3 star reviews. We arrived on a cold windy Sunday morning at 9am and weren’t sure they were even open. We got close parking and could not see anyone inside. The«Open» sign was out at the front door and once we scooted in from the chill there were only a few people inside. Table service was friendly and helpful. Once we get coffee and food they were attentive. The complimentary citrus scones with honey were excellent and the coffee was flavorful. Now about the food. I’ll go around the table. Two ordered the strapazzare and one omelette. All said the eggs were«just okay» and we’re blah, lacking in flavor. My date ordered her eggs over easy and what she got was hard yokes. To someone’s credit they did substitute the requested mushrooms for the green peppers. I ordered the traditional Benedict. It tasted good but the hollandaise sauce looked like just melted butter. It was not thick and creamy. My date, who knows more about these finer dinning things than I, says the sauce was«broken.» That meant that the cook didn’t take the time to properly emulsify the egg yolks with the clarified butter and so they don’t blend together, they separated. From another review with a photo of the same dish, obviously they can get it right, but not this morning. Between the blah eggs, an overcooked order of eggs and broken hollandaise sauce they deserve the 3 star. We did tip our waitress well. By 10 am when we left the place was filling up fast.

Truly a neighborhood restaurant, with delicious homey foods. Every breakfast item on the menu is the right choice. The country fried steak and gravy is mouthwatering. The home potatoes that most of the breakfast dishes come with is tasty as potatoes can be. They are not greasy and the onions add such yummy flavor. If I had to be picky I would say the potatoes should be cooked a title bit longer to give it more texture. The lunch and dinner menu has items that Americans would crave. Mom’s meatloaf and dad’s hamburger are some foods that lots of people would crave to flashback to their homey dinners made by their parents. Mom’s cooking is never bad! Bonus: during breakfast, your dishes come with complimentary scones with honey to dip. I always try to save it for dessert but it usually is gone before the entrees come out…
