Hobby House

hobby house is now closed at this location. he has moved north on route 9 and is next to half time beer distributor.

Great place, been around for years… the lady with the dog is so friendly and their selection of model kits (new and old) is top notch, although it’s kind of expensive.

A visit to Hobby House is a bit nostalgic to me. In the 80s and 90s, when it was originally on Old Manchester Rd. under the ownership of Art Frazee, I spent hundreds of dollars on strategy and role-​playing games, collectibles, miniatures, paints, etc. Decades ago, I also had model rockets, model cars, and model trains. If I ever wanted to start these hobbies again, Hobby House would be my 1-​stop shop, no questions asked. Their selection of Estes model rockets is the best I have ever seen anywhere. They had enough of the basics, and a bit beyond, for your model railroad fix, and a ton of extras, and I’m sure if they don’t have it in stock they can order it for you. I’m very glad Hobby House has endured.

Although the place was about to close at end-​of-​day, the store was open when I walked in, and was amazed with this store. Although the aisles were pretty narrow, but the prices were higher than average. Although this place features items for the hobbyist in outdoor hobbies, they do sell craft paints and a few others for indoor hobbies as well.
With the prices, come the employees. The employees were knowledgeable, but hard to come-​by. They might have been in the back, or out of sight, but they weren’t seen, no matter where I looked in the store. I would have expected at least one of them to be behind the counter, but there was no one nearby to ask. (both behind the counter); there was no one on the production floor to help move things back to where they should be (which most stores tend to have at least 1 during all times). This might not have been the best hobby store I’ve been to, but it certain won’t be my last.
I don’t get down to Poughkeepsie much (from a town in the northern part of the county), but personally, I have my stores close by that I can easily purchase from that doesn’t give me much problems.
