Oh lord where do I begin. If you want to get your fix sushi this is the place, almost everything I had tried is delicious I usually get the Thai roll which has mango on top and is awesome. The location is a bit hidden and a bit small in my opinion which is why they are able to have fresh ingredients and you can see it and taste it. The owner is a nice lady who’s always greeting the customers as they came in. They have a sushi bar where you can see how they make your sushi which is always fascinating to see. Their tempura banana is to die for and also the fried cream cheese . Their downside is that it could be very expensive but for the quality you get is worth it.

I’ve been to Tokyo Express plenty of times for dinner, but recently I went for lunch. Unlike other sushi restaurants that have lunch specials(x amount of rolls for x dollars), they just give you the dinner menu– so this can be a very expensive choice for lunch. I went with their three course deal for $ 15, but it’s the same deal they have for dinner. It’s less than what I would pay for most of their sushi bar entrees, but more than lunch specials at other restaurants I’ve been to. Thankfully the sushi itself at Tokyo Express is delicious, but I’d prefer to come here for dinner from now on.

By name alone, this sushi restaurant may seem cheap, but don’t let the name deter you. We’re used to exceptional sushi restaurants in NYC and this place hits the nail on the head. The atmosphere and décor is like that of East Asia and the fish is as fresh as it comes. We have tried several rolls the last few times we’ve been there and all are exceptional; fish à la carte is also fresh and they serve very large pieces. Do yourself a favor, try the Ramune(Japanese soda).

Great sushi place… Pokipc has a lot of them, but this is def one of the best… The volcano roll is out of this world… It’s a fried roll with spicy crab on top… If you have a local discount card, you can get a free California roll with a $ 15 purchase… Lunch specials are the usual fare — 2 or 3 rolls with miso soup android salad… Overall I highly recommend!!!

This *was* my favorite sushi place for several years until my most recent visit. The food was delicious and fresh. The service is usually… not the best or most welcoming, but it was never«bad» before. I didn’t like that the server, the one who helps me 99% of the time on my visits, tried to sneak on a full priced specialty roll. She admonished me for not telling her I was ordering from that menu, despite it being in front of me the entire time I placed my order. This would have normally not given me any pause if she hadn’t added on the tip, or «suggested gratuity»(on a party of one, is this standard?) for herself already. Nice try! I’ll be visiting other sushi spots in the area.

I absolutely love this place. I have never ever had a poor experience here and I go all the time. I have had a variety of things on the menu, too many to remember but my all time favorite is the maki combo c I believe, that comes with Spice Tuna, Spicy salmon, and a spicy California roll.(Sometimes I’ll substitute the salmon or California for a spicy yellowtail roll. Because I love yellow tail haha) Anyway most of the combos and entrees come with a miso soup and salad with ginger dressing which are both delicious. I used to frequent Sushi Village around the corner until my friends and I discovered Tokyo Express. Now we just go here in the local area. Also the ingredients used always taste very fresh, especially the fish.

Hands down! My favorite Japanese Rest, wouldn’t waste my money elsewhere! It is very hard these days to be able to go out for dinner and walk away feeling money we’ll spend. Enjoy the food, appreciate the hospitality greatly!

The food is okay, but the service is sub par and expensive. They have a ‘lunch special’ for $ 15 that gives three rolls. First off, there are other sushi spots around town that are half the price, but that is irrelevant. I had went there with a friend and we weren’t that hungry, so we decided to split it. That’s a lot of sushi for one person. The waiter was rude because of this, and told us that it was only for one person. Needless to say, I went from a regular to placing an embargo on them. Although it isn’t a terrible sushi joint, there are better, more appreciative businesses in the area.

I got their lunch sushi order. Two rolls with the soup and a salad, just right for one person and at $ 10.26 with tax, very cost-effective. It was ready for me in about five minutes and the staff was very courteous. Not the best sushi I’ve ever eaten but it was yummy and cheap. Definitely a good local option.

Hands down the best sushi in the Poughkeepsie area. Creative specials, nothing overly fancy with cramped space. Everything I want in a sushi bar. Go Love Boat — go big or go home!

Tokyo Express’s location invariably forces it to be compared to Sushi Village. Luckily for Tokyo Express, they win this, hands down. Service is always friendly and quick, and the food is notably better. Their recent expansion should also help with the formerly frequent packed house. The original space was cramped and awkwardly placed, but the new space is much more open. The food is pretty standard Japanese food, honestly. Not particularly impressive, mind, but it’s not necessarily bad either. I’m not a huge fan of their chicken, but I rarely do at Japanese restaurants. Their noodle dishes are decent, and their unagi don is delish. One of the better restaurants in Poughkeepsie, but it’s not incredible in the grand scheme of things.

Great Sushi… fresh, lots to choose from. Affordable specials. It’s one of those hidden gems, you’d easily walk right by this place, but don’t the sushi is amazing.

can’t believe Its been more than 10 years since i went to Vassar college. great memories! Tokyo Express is still there serving fresh sushi and delicious rolls. they expanded a little bit and took over the tiny pizza joint that used to be next door. place looks almost exactly the same. simple interior décor, nothing fancy but has enough atmosphere to make you feel hip. lol i had the spicy boat tonight, sweetheart roll, few pieces of salmon and eel sushi. nothing exotic. it is poughkeepsie after all. sushi in Poughkeepsie doesn’t get better than this. i do suggest a large hot sake along with the food. it brings out the sweetness of the fish.

Tokyo express has tons of great choices on the menu so even if you are dining with someone who does not like sushi, there are many other choices(vegetarian options, terriyaki chicken, etc). But, if you are a sushi fan, the sushi here is great. I would recommend the«spicy» sushi roll boat for 2(it’s not that hot — all of the best spicy sushi rolls brought to you in a wooden boat) if you are with a friend or date. The traditional boat is also good for the less adventurous!

Stopped here on a visit to Vassar and was really impressed. Great service, wonderful sushi. White tuna and hamachi were standouts.

Been a long time, been a long time, been a lonely lonely lonely time… My love for Japanese food started at Tokyo Express. Yes, there have been better Japanese restaurants since then; places with better lighting, spaciousness, and quicker service(there’s only 1 – 2 waitresses at a time so give them a break; they work hard and are always friendly). Yet, I miss the curry chicken, the yakitori, the gyoza, and the beef teriyaki. Many times I would walk back to my dorm with a bag full of food to eat at my leisure in my dorm room. If I ate there, it was with a friend(or 2 or 3) and we’d pass the time laughing and forgetting about our exams or papers for just an hour or so.

I don’t even know where to begin with my overwhelming sense of disappointment the second I looked down at the tiny, pitiful rolls I ordered. Never have I seen sushi rolls as tiny as the ones here. I guess I’m just used to the generous sushi portions in SoCal where I can get quality, all-you-can-eat sushi for only $ 18. If you’re a sushi snob like I am and aren’t willing to fork over money for measly rolls that won’t even fill you, then don’t come here. Unfortunately, Poughkeepsie does not have too many options when it comes to sushi, much less Asian cuisine, so many people stop by here. I have tried other things on the menu like the Donkatsu which was just average – nothing to write home about.

I know I live in New York City and have an abundance of Japanese restaurants available to me whenever I want, but a small part of me still misses Tokyo Express, where I mastered using chopsticks whilst kind of drunk or completely exhausted. I can’t attest to their sushi(because I don’t eat fish!), but can comment on a large portion of their non-sushi dinner menu. The chicken and steak teriyakis were both my favorite dishes, served sizzling on a bed of delicious delicious teriyaki-soaked onions. The various tempuras are light and crispy. My favorite are the chicken and sweet potato options. The pork gyoza and spring rolls are must-have appetizers. I was less of a fan of the udon and the beef negimaki. There wasn’t enough scallion or beef in the latter. Finally, you should end your meal with fried green tea ice cream; you will not regret this decision, I promise. Make sure they put whipped cream on it. As far as I can remember, service was a little slow, and they sometimes seated us in the most awkward arrangements(but accomodating eight people can be difficult in the already crowded/weird-shaped restaurant), but while you’re waiting for a long time at your weird table you can listen to the sweet sounds of the Backstreet Boys, early Britney Spears, and other teen 90s sensations, so don’t complain!

The past couple of times we have been here we have not been feeling the love as we have in the dozens of times we have been here over the last 10 months or so. Tonight we dined during prime dating time(6:30 on a Saturday night while Vassar is in session) in an empty restaurant. The tekka maki was inedible due to its extreme fibrousness and the color was off too as if whoever sold it needed to make it redder as it looked like rare beef. The ebi was rubbery, the salmon a little slimy. Yuck! I really should have sent it back and am kicking myself I did not. On our previous visit they burned the eel but served it anyway even after we made a joke about it. We gave them another chance but now they are off the list. They must be off a lot of others’ too since it was deserted(insert crickets chirping here).
