Neighborhood Cut and Shave

This review is on behalf of my boyfriend, who just had his haircut with Richie. He has red marks all over his head given how intense this guy uses his comb or whatever else. He had went here a couple other times and it was ok, this time it was terrible. I see that others gave this place a decent review, so maybe it’s the one person that’s the problem, being aggressive, not listening to what his clients are asking, and rudely accepting a $ 40 charge for the terrible job he has done with no delight to anyone.

Just went here and it’s grossly overpriced at $ 40 for a haircut in a plain old barber chop shop. Quick cut… get em out… ka ching! Next customer.

Paid $ 40 for a haircut. Realized later they shaved one of my sideburns and not the other. Haircut overall looked pretty bad. He also combed my forehead for some reason and left a mark. I don’t really do Unilocal reviews but this experience was bad enough to prompt me to say something. Wouldn’t return.

I had nearly a carbon copy of the experience Noah N. described. I’ve got a «vintage» style haircut– a version of a fade/​high and tight– long hair on top, shaved to a line on one side, but faded on the other side and around the back for a pretty smooth look on that side, and so that the long hair blends. I told Richie exactly what I wanted, which was essentially just a trim of the haircut I already had. I even told him the exact clipper setting to use. My usual barber uses a 1.5.
Richie seemed to understand what I was saying, and I felt confident given that the entire idea of this place is that they know about vintage mens cuts. Richie proceeded to shave my head ALL THE WAY AROUND and down to the SKIN. He totally removed the fade/​blend from the side of my head that had it, and the back. I was left with a bunch of hair on the top of my head and a bald circle around it. He seemed very pleased with his work, and kept saying «see! it’s better!» It looked horrible.
Neighborhood Cut & Shave offers a $ 40 «full haircut» and a $ 25 «trim,» which is just for clippers. Richie never picked up a pair of scissors, and did nothing but shave a circle around my head, yet they charged me the full $ 40. If I wanted a circle shaved around my head, I could have done it at home. They were «nice» and I did get a shot of whisky. But wtf, I have my OWN whisky at home and they also have plenty of it across the street at Soda. After a month of waiting for it to grow out enough to see my regular barber, he still had to cut the hair on top a lot shorter than I wanted to make it blend in again, and it will be months until I get back to what I originally had and wanted. I can’t speak for the other barbers at Neighborhood Cut & Shave, but Richie is a total butcher, and the rest of them saw his work and charged me $ 40 for it.
Never going back, even if there was a whisky I.V.

I feel bad doing this — Richie was fairly nice, but today I got the worst haircut I’ve had in my life. I feel like an idiot every time I catch my reflection in the mirror.
My instructions — short on the sides but not too short on top. I told him I don’t wear anything in my hair, so it’s got to look fine as it is.
Twice I showed him my very receding hairline, artfully hidden behind the longest, floppiest hair I had ever had in my life (about 8 months’ growth). I showed him, I thought we both understood, by way of saying, ‘don’t cut the top too short’.
He didn’t inspect my hair, didn’t look at all at how it grows, where it’s thin — he just started lopping it off. Other barbers might go slowly, layering, deciding where they’re going to transition to the top. This man just cut almost all of my hair off in one go, at one length, leaving only some flock of seagulls bangs. I was immediately concerned.
I asked ‘what do you do now with this?’, as I flopped my remaining few hairs. He said ‘well you don’t want that too long — it looks bad.’ I agreed. It did look bad. I said again ‘I don’t want it too short’, which he must have thought indicated he should cut it all off, which he immediately did.
I grabbed what was left of my hair and said ‘see this is what I was concerned about.’ He said ‘you want it shorter?’ I said ‘no, I don’t want it shorter.‘
He then trimmed my beard, leaving me completely covered in hair (a thing I can’t abide from any barber anywhere ever), and then proceeded to put some styling shit in my hair. He pulled it this way and that, standing it off my head, and said ‘see?‘
I do not see.
When I got home and took another look in the mirror, I realized that a decent segment of my bangs remained about 8″ long, wisping this way and that over the more or less crewcut I was left with. So I got to both remove the hair from my face and cut my own bangs.
That was simultaneously the most I have ever spent on a haircut and the worst haircut I have ever had. I feel like a smacked ass.

I’ve received a couple decent haircuts here, but just got the worst fade. In the back, it looks like I did it myself after a night of heavy drinking. Won’t be coming back.

I’ve come here a couple times for a haircut and beard trim. Always professional people here cutting. It might be busy at times, so stop by or call ahead for an appointment. It’s cash only, and the closest ATM is across a busy Vandy street, so to prevent yourself from looking like an idiot like yours truly, come with some greenbacks.

Just moved to the neighborhood and needed to find a good barber. I went to two other barbers in the area first and got crappy hair cuts and smelly hot towels shoved in my face. Neighborhood Cut and Shave is an oasis in a desert of bad barbers. You can make appointments online, their barbers are great and the shop is very clean. They even play cool music while you are there. They may be a little more pricey but trust me it is worth it. Learn from my mistakes and don’t waste your time!

Some cuts have been better than others, but all have been at least very good. It’s far too easy to pay a lot for a bad cut in this town, but not here.

My husband has been getting his haircut in bay ridge for the past nine years (he used to live there) but it’s such a hassle. I made him a surprise appointment over the phone, explaining the situation. The gentleman I spoke to said he would take good care of my husband and pair him with someone wonderful.
My husband was less than pleased about my surprise, but after Henry worked his magic, he couldn’t be more thrilled. No one has ever been able to get his cut down to make it look so professional (his mom and sister are both stylists). Henry made my husband look like a million bucks. Now his cut matches his style.
I also love the vibe of this place. It’s a real man’s man feel. Whiskey upon arrival, hot towel, etc. the décor matches the feel perfectly. We found a new stylist and best is its right down the block!

Really awesome place. I went in for a quick beard trim and the guys were all super nice and professional. Rich did a really great job shaping my beard, mostly with scissors, and I think they also give you a shot of whiskey when you’re in for a full haircut. Would recommend.

I got Frank a guru with the fade and I could not be happier. Uses a great curved razor blade for precision around the ear. Knows how to do a great buzz cut. Book him for that and you’ll get a Dominican Jedi with a light saber cutting your hair.

It was my first time getting cut by him and he knew exactly the hairstyle I had in mind with minimal explanation on my end.
Good vibe, good culture, good whiskey, great haircut. You can’t go wrong.

This is a much needed wonderful barbershop in prospect heights. Alex, the owner, is extremely friendly and gives an A+ haircut. Also little shots of whiskey while you wait doesn’t hurt :-) I went in yesterday to get a simple clean up and they didn’t even charge me for it because I go regularly. Seriously wonderful place.

Great place. They do a careful job, have plenty of hipster style, and the prices are reasonable.

Points for: location in Prospect Heights, and related convenience; fantastic music; great smelling products; a very close shave; and friendly staff (see next sentence). Not a five because: Can’t figure out the shot of whiskey policy (in three trips, was offered one once); that great music is sometimes too loud for the (very small) space, impeding conversation; and the often friendly staff are sometimes, inexplicably, not.

Finally have a great barber shop with great barbers in the hood. Unfortunately — Richie left and I can’t seem to track him down anymore. I’ve also had my cut from Tom who was really great as well.

These guys are great, Carlos fixed up my beard and I get tons of compliments now, I have been rocking it for over five years and must have been doing something wrong. I don’t touch my beard now.

Old school without being some dumb hipster seeming place. Alex owns this new spot and his original one in the WV and the dude has been cutting hair since he was a kid, only picks from the best barbers who fill his stations.
From what I gather all of the barber stations/​mirrors are custom built to the shops, everyone has a cool vibe (shot of whiskey, yes please!), great music… all in all is a solid place.

Neighborhood Cut & Shave is the best barbershop. You are dealing the best of the best. I cut my hair on weekly basis and if I am in need of a clean and nice fade this is the place to go. The environment is amazing, the moment you walk in it feels like you are going back couple decades in a small town. The line of barbers are all like brothers, they are well experienced and skilled to meet your custom hair style needs. From a complimentary shot of whiskey to the jazzy/​blues tunes, this is the place to get your hair cut needs.
