Grant’s Block

Awesome Cinco de Mayo party! Lots of vendors, great food and loud music.

Grant’s Block is an outdoor space next to the parking lot on Union Street… from Westminster to Weybosset. In the summer, it’s home to Movies on the Block, bocce courts and food trucks. It’s also the location for Providence Art Festival and other outdoor events!
Nice to have a centrally located space for events, but it would be nice if it had more of a «character».

Am I the only person who thinks that this «park» is a boring pile of stone and concrete? Sure, they get points for all the events held here, but this space is teensy and uncomfortable, gets crowded very easily. At real parks, they have these green things called «trees» and «bushes» that would have been nice at this site. «Park» isn’t even an accurate term. «Abandoned lot» is more appropriate.

It’s great that Grant’s Block hosts free movies, holiday markets, special events and all, but ultimately, it’s a pile of gravel. Give me more grass, trees, and space.

Free movies? Yes please. A great little spot nestled between Tazza and Flan y Ajo. I couldn’t be happier to attend several flicks this summer for the Thursday night «movies on the block.» Bring a beach chair and a few bucks — there is food BBQ’ing outside — Tazza, and usually an ice cream truck makes an appearance. And again (besides the food for purchase) this event is Gratis — EVERY Thursday in the summer.

Great spot right in the heart of downtown with ton of great events. But the best thing about Grants Block is Food truck Tuesdays, if you have never been you are missing out!

Over the last few years, the city (or Tazza — not quite sure who’s in charge) have done a great job of transforming this old parking lot into to a community space that has brought a vibrancy to Westminster. Throughout the year, mainly in the summer, Grant’s block is used for Movies on the Block, bocce, arts fests, and concerts. The space is divided nicely to accommodate all these different uses with a small grassy area, dividers that work as benches, and a gravel section.
It’s nice to have this little area to relax and enjoy the city.

I’ve been by Grant’s Block countless times and never quite knew what it was called. Now I do, and have since been a frequent visitor, especially enjoying the free summer movie series called «Movies on the Block» (Thursday nights). It’s a cozy little outdoor space across from Taza, and a good spot to sit down with a good book or even a picnic basket and pass some time in Providence. It’s mostly gravel with a small patch of grass, so plan accordingly if you plan to hang in the graveled area (you might want a folding chair or a blanket).

Grant’s Block is the perfect place for people watching on a beautiful day in Downcity. At lunch time you can find me blissfully snacking on a to-​go lunch from one of the great cafes on Westminster or one of the delicious food trucks that park off of Weybosset (Poco Loco=YUM!) on-​top of the the green «benches».
During the evenings on Thursdays (this day may vary depending on the Summer) in the Summer, come early to avoid the hoards of folks, young and old, coming to lounge and watch some of their fave films at Movies on the Block. Don’t forget to grab a fab cocktail and snack from your gracious hosts at Tazza. True, less gravel and more grass would make for a more comfy place to park your picnic blanket, but it’s still a nice little space to hang (and you can always bring a beach chair, instead).
I must say that it may not be the prettiest green space in the city, but it’s got a lot going for it during the Summer. So stop on by, grab a taco or sandwich, catch a film or music set, or just sit back and watch your fellow Providencians (?) shop and mosey on by.

How could one not love Grant’s Block? The scene of Monday Night Movies, live music shows, and Lunch Truck Tuesday?
It’s a fab little spot situated in the middle of Westminster, and therefore Downcity. What’s interesting is that Grant’s Block is part of a block that was demolished and left as this nice open garden space for the peoples of the PVD to convene and mingle. I like that.
So, it’s not much of a park, but the graveled ground and raised gardens that enclose it create an ideal spot for all of the street fairs, public gatherings and even skateboarding sessions that take place in the PVD. Cools, yo’.
