There is no better private social club in the city, likely Rhode Island. The benefits of membership are numerous — first and foremost is the service and staffing; think of the level of personalized service that you would find at The Four Seasons if you were a regular guest for extended periods. Second is the dining — five star, some of the finest cuisine in the north east with their local celebrity chef Gary Comella. The wine list to pair with dinner is celebrated up and down New England, and their selection of single malts rivals any cigar bar in the region. Next, in equal parts, are the house itself, it’s history, it’s private rooms, the gym and squash courts, the beautiful copper bar, and the regular functions. The University Club is by far the most socially active club in the City and it shows with its members pride and regular use of the facilities. Bully for the management through the years, they have maintained over 120 years of rich history and exemplary service to a membership made up of successful professionals in all fields of practice.

Went here for an evening dinner. It’s a very quaint place – looks decorated in the style of one of those old New England homes. Think florid wallpaper with illustrations of birds, ivy, clocks, and curlicues. Think wooden tables with white doilies and tablecloths none too fine. While the architecture seemed predictable, the food did too. But then, it’s just another private club, so what do you expect? It’s about the people – not the establishment here. That being said, the waiter was very kind. The host even remembered me the next time I stopped by.

This is a review of only one meal at the club. As a preface, I am not a member, but recently attended an event here. So I cant comment on the daily meals, squash courts, membership rules, etc. The food was your standard banquet fare, with our choice being salmon, steak, and pasta. My colleagues felt the salmon was 3.5 star quality(it is salmon afteral, and in my opionion that is the max one can get for salmon). The steak got 4.5 stars, and the pasta 4 stars with a one star subtraction for size(very small dish). The meal was prefaced with an above average caesar salad, and finished with a rich chocolate cake. The room held around 30 people and was very well appointed. All in all it made for a nice evening.
