This review is for the ophthalmology department — the only one I’ve been to at this location. There are pros and cons. Pros: The opticians are super helpful and friendly, and they have a great selection of glasses, from high-end European-made frames to basics and household names like Kate Spade. The location is easier to deal with than University City if you live on the Main Line, and parking is free. Diane Heistand Talecki, one of the contact lens specialists, is great — takes her time explaining differences in lenses and proper eye and lens care, and will provide samples. The opthalmologists seem competent, if not the friendliest doctors in the world. The cons, as with Penn Medicine in general, have to do with billing. My insurance was billed in advance for procedures that were recommended, before I even decided to have them. I did manage, with many phone calls and frustrated rants, to get the charges removed. Then, later, when I did have the procedures, I was billed directly rather than insurance. Again, many phone calls later, it did get straightened out … but is this incompetence really to be expected with a reputable medical institution like Penn? More recently, I could not get the desk staff to understand that my vision benefits should be billed for eye exams, and my medical insurance for everything else. It took the helpful opticians(Thanks so much!) to get that straightened out. At least, I think, I hope, it’s been straightened out — I guess I’ll find out when I get a Penn bill in about 3 months because they are SO on top of things. Honestly, what is so hard about this, with computers to help? Previously I went to a little office in Delaware who had no problem comprehending how to bill for services. I wish that Penn Medicine would do something about their billing system — scrap it and start over. It very nearly deters me from seeking out P enn doctors.

We went here to get testing as our local Penn Medicine did not offer these tests. If you come here be prepared to valet park if you cannot walk far. In the afternoon, the parking lot was jammed and I had to circle the lot multiple times to find a close enough spot for my challenged walker. Inside this place is bustling like a city hospital. Signage is good and will direct you appropriately. In the ophthalmology department, there was not enough seating for waiting patients and there was a long walk from the sitting area to the rooms for the visual field test and the retinal pictures. The rooms needed a good cleaning. Large empty cardboard boxes were left just sitting in the testing rooms. That being said, the staff here was extremely patient in dealing with patients and kudos to them for that.
