Absolutely horrible. The one time I tried it, the food was so salty as to be inedible.

Wow so we decided to check this spot out based of the reviews from Unilocal.Gotta say highly disappointed. Food is very expensive for the amount you get. And to be on honest. Wasn’t well seasoned. So for those reasons I wouldn’t go back.

Found Kim’s while searching for a local restaurant that serves chicken & waffles as my husband had never had it before. We went today(Saturday) for a late lunch/early dinner. We started with two uptowns(ice tea/lemonade) which were VERY very sweet! Too sweet for our taste. Then an appetizer. The sweet and sour shrimp was INCREDIBLE. Best shrimp I’d ever had. Both my husband and I got the chicken and waffles. He had the wings I had the breast. All in all this is authentic soul food. My husband said the wings were delicious. The breast was a little greasy, and under seasoned. The mac & cheese was just ok, for the both of us. Almost too hot to eat, and extremely oily at the bottom of the little cup it’s served in. The greens while fresh, lacked any meat(Kim’s doesn’t cook with pork) there was no Smokey flavor which I was hoping for even if the greens are cooked with smoked turkey. The cornbread was INSANE. SO fresh, so moist and REALLY delicious. The portions of the entrée were very large. 2 waffles, three wings for hubby, one large boneless breast for me. The sides were smallish, and a little hard to eat out of the little cups they’re served in. We took dessert home. I chose red velvet and hubby carrot cake. He hasn’t tried his yet, my red velvet was dry, dense and unsatisfying. I was really disappointed with my take home dessert. The ambiance is very chill, there were no other eat in patrons when we dined, but several take out customers. I give Kim’s three stars overall. We will be returning to try brunch since all the reviews for brunch are raving. Lastly the staff was very sweet & welcoming.

The service was good. The waitress was very attentive. I had the beef short ribs and they were very tender. The Mac and cheese was great but they were very greasy at the bottom. But the food was delicious

This place is very tiny but cozy. The little old lady was soo cute and nice. I ordered an uptown to drink and a mango strawberry lemonade. I hated the uptown because it taste like a straight up tea bag. The lemonade was overly sweet it could give you diabetes. Luckily i had water in my purse to dilute it. The food is quit a wait because it is made fresh. I ordered the chicken and waffles with mac and cheese and candy yams. My partner had fried whiting and wing with cole slaw. The chicken crispy and hot but had no flavor. It seemed like they just dust the outside with salt. The waffles were ok but the bottom one was soggy. I only ate half of the 2 waffles. The candy yams were good but a tiny portion. The mac and cheese was HORRIBLE. It was a weird brown color. It was mushy and flavor less. It tasted like it was a week old and looked even worse. It was even swimming in oil. My partner drowned his food in ketchup and hot sauce. I then ordered 5 desserts to take home. The red celvet cake taste burnt. The brownie was good. The Amerto cake was like a dry pound cake. The carrot cake was good. The banana pudding cake was awesome. All in all i gave this place 2 stars. The service and the people were awesome and sweet. The food was mediocre. Ive had wayyy better soul food. I even make better food. The people who previously commented must not know what flavorful food taste like. This is a nice little shack but i would not come here again. Only for the lovely owners.

I been coming here occasionally for over a year. I love southern cuisine and this place DOESIT for me. Kim makes the food and her mother is the sweet older lady that serves the guests. I feel they could use some waiters on staff that are competant. They tend to hire very young ppl with little experience(if it wasn’t for this I’d give a 5 outta 5) My favorite meal is Sunday brunch. $ 15 for the massive amount of food you get quite a deal. I always have to take half home. Don’t expect the food to come out in a hurry expect slower cooking but delicious food. Great fried chicken and grits! Also try the fried whiting, mac n cheese and corn bread: D

Came in during a chilly fall night. It was a little empty but right when we walked in, the atmosphere was warm and cozy. My husband and I ordered tons of food and I am so obsessed with the GUAVALEMONADE! It is a must try– we ordered a container to take home!- and it’s homemade! Their portions are quite large, so be prepared to munch down then head towards a food coma. My husband had the country fried steak which was prepared fresh for us along with mashed potatoes and mac and cheese. It was all delicious. The mac and cheese wasn’t 5 stars, but you can definitely tell it was homemade. I had the pulled chicken or pork(I don’t quite remember) sandwich. It cam simply as a huge, larger than your mouth can fit sandwich and that was delish! We also ordered the fritters as an appetizer. It probably would’ve helped if we had more people with us to finish that portion. The restaurant also has tons of desserts that are made from scratch — they had just made and was cooling a huge tray of peach cobbler. If we weren’t overblown with food in our stomachs I think we would’ve ordered it. Great place to go for a chill night with good food and very nice company. Every person we met there was very friendly! It was overall a wonderful experience.

In one word. Fascinating! I had the whiting and chicken with Cajun fries and collard greens. The chicken definitely had a home cooked flavor with a great seasoning. The whiting was also very flavorful. We had a side of guava lemonade that was also delicious. The best of all was the corn bread.

Our meal was absolutely phenomenal. I had the oxtail and pork ribs as an entrée with sides of Mac n cheese, collards, and candied yams. My wife had the salmon, oxtail, mash, collards, and stuffing which was delectable. Dessert was spot on too with some kind of Kahlua cake. I almost forgot the great array of lemonade I had. Oh my I am so glad my mother in law is moving right near this awesome establishment. Now I have multiple reasons to come to Rahway! Check them out if you want gourmet quality soul food.

There is something to be said when the company you’re with doesn’t talk to each other while eating. The food is fresh and excellent. The service is great.

I went here not knowing what to expect other than comfort food. Wow, this place was amazing. The portions are generous. The food is delicious! I tried the fried apples, among other things — I’m in love. It’s a shame it’s only open on the weekends, however, this keeps you wanting more. The wait staff was incredibly friendly and made me feel very welcomed. I absolutely plan on returning — probably more often than I should. Wait time for your food is a little slow, but, everything seemed made to order. It was absolutely worth the wait. Don’t go if you’re in a rush. Go if you’re looking for a fantastic meal.

Ok my two stars is only got food not my whole experience in this place. Ok now yesterday me and my girl was looking for a good soul food restaurant and found this place I Unilocal. We came here the place looked a bit empty I was like good we don’t have to wait long. So we seat down the waiter took our order i order the starter wings and fried corn bread. Let me tell u it was like heaven loved every bit of it! I turned and tell my girl friend if this starter is this great imagine how good is our food going be. So I order the Mac and cheese with potato salad and the country chicken fried steak. Waiter told us it was going be 35 – 40 min wait as they cook it as order I said no problem. I waited for it soon enough it came to the table now here’s where the problem starts. The country chicken steak was very bland. Sauce was very thick no flavor. The mac and cheese was drown in oil! Potato salad was ok. Over all will take my chances traveling to amy Ruth for real soul food.

Will definitely come back to this spot for a bite to eat the next time I visit Rahway. Thanks to my Unilocalers out there who pointed this place out. My uncle has been living in the area since I can remember. He remembers when this establishment was a ice cream parlour. When he arrived, he ordered the fish sandwich. I had just eaten, but the smell of the sandwich almost made me order one anyway. I could taste the lightness of the filet just from the smell. He mentioned that he usually has to venture all the way to Elizabeth for a good fish sandwich. Now he is aware of one in walking distance. I had come there for dessert and a coffee. Coffee is decent. Desert is amazing. I had the bread pudding. Southern classic. Taystee! The service is friendly. No. Not good enough. The service is welcoming. And I love going back to where I’m welcome.

First, I have to say that the staff is über-friendly — all smiles and happy to have you there. The place is very cute and clean, with and an amazing tiled bar. That said, we were very disappointed with the food. The highlights include amazing beef ribs that fell off the bone with a touch of the fork and fresh-made sweet potato fries. We were told that the chicken-fried steak would take about 35 minutes. No rush, but now we knew what to expect. During our wait, we heard the microwave being used often. I’m from the belief that if I go out to dinner, it should be made fresh for me. I can heat food at home in a microwave. The chicken fried steak was thick and tough. My husband had said, the sauce was not the typical white sauce. but it was flavorful. The macaroni and cheese had too much breading and it was dried out because it had been microwaved. I’m all for waiting for a good protein, but in 35 minutes, you have time to make fresh macaroni and cheese. The collard greens, while very tender, didn’t have enough flavor. Those were also microwaved. Cornbread was ok, not outstanding. We skipped dessert. All the cakes were pre-cut already in plastic containers instead of still a whole or partial cake. Sorry to say, I won’t be back.

The wife and I went to Sunday Brunch. We both had the full brunch for $ 15.95; a total bargain. You get an assorment of bacons, a piece of fried fish, eggs your way, creamy grits, smothered potatoes, homemade biscuits, and chicken&waffle. It was all solid home cooking. but the star of the show is the chicken from the chicken & Waffle. OMG!!! the best i have had in the Northeast. My folks are county folk. We know our way around that bird. And we certainly know fried chicken. I’d put Ms. Kim’s bird right up there in the top 2 – 3 of all time for me personally. I love fried chicken and that is some really good bird. The crust is stacked on there, all around the piece. Double dregging, I’m sure. And, you can tell she is cooking it in a big ol’ black skillet back there. You can taste the love in that skillet. I’m thinking a buttermilk marinate as well. And the crust itself is well seasoned. Man, it’s good. Also, the place is clean. I peeped out the fridge, the celing fans, piping in the ceiling, behind the counter, on top of counter(where the desserts are stacked) and the hot tray area… it was all clean as a whistle. There was not even dust on the ceiling fan. I will say that i did not like that they left milk on the tabel inbetween servings(just a peeve of mine). I dinged them a point because the backup that a group of 6 – 8 people caused was too much. It was understandable but they could have done something to get us eating more quickly. Especially, since some of the food was already prepared in the hot tray area. They just needed to think a little out of the box in that situation. AND, the waitress did not know how to effectively explain the brunch. It took us a couple of tries to get it right. But, they are all totally sweet and the food is worth the wait. The lil’ hiccups were not a big deal. We will be going back when they open again this weekend. Oh yeah, they are only open Fri-Sun. Too bad for that. Anyway, we’ll be back for sure. And we recommend this FORSURE!!! It takes me right back to home cooked meals made with love!

Welp, the brunch is still as superb as it was when I made my first review. I give them 5 stars for the full brunch. But I deduct a star because the green/specialty tea is still a $ 2 upcharge for one bag and that is absolutely ridiculous. That entire box of bigelow tea cost them $ 2 a box. Are you kidding me? Anyway, kims mom is still cute as ever and I will continue to patron their business.

This review is only for the desserts at Kim’s though I have every intention of returning to try some of their brunch items. My mom and I stopped by Kim’s on a search for a great pie or dessert treat. Kim’s was absolutely the right place to go. We were greeted at the counter by Rae(99% sure that was her name) who proceeded to take us on a tour of all the options. On display were no fewer than twelve varieties of cake and cobbler, one more mouth watering than the next. I tried the peach cobbler, and Mom had the German Chocolate Cake. My cobbler was served heated and was everything I wanted it to be. Big soft peaches, cinnamon sweet crumbs, and super moist crusty pieces. Each bite had a different combination of favors and texture — SOGOOD! Mom’s cake was rich and moist. The cake portion was more of a bittersweet chocolate which was a great offset to the thick sweet coconut filling. Service is a tad on the slow side, but with such a homey feeling I wasn’t in a hurry to go. Meanwhile, I need to get back for the Hummingbird and Strawberry Chocolate cakes as well as the chicken and waffles.

As did some other folks, I trusted Unilocal’s reviews when wife and I wanted to find a place to eat near our home. Unilocal did not disappoint and Kim’s certainly did not either. While small, the place has fabulous food. We came early since we had our 21mo old daughter with us so we were able to get a table on a Sat Night. By 7:15p almost all tables were taken. We skipped the appetizers since we knew we wanted to try their deserts and boy the cakes did not disappoint. I also didn’t know the Union County Performing Arts center was right here and will keep Kim’s in mind any time I hit this venue. Not only were the staff friendly, patrons were all friendly also. Felt like a big family dinner. Would definitely recommend, the food was awesomesauce.

Boy I’ve been eating very indulgently lately, considering Thanksgiving just passed and I decided to join my sister for a Sunday brunch at Kim’s In The Mix. The restaurant is a nicely decorated home style restaurant that has a warm non-pretentious«family-friendly» feel to it that makes you feel very comfortable once you walk in. Me and my sister ordered the full brunch which consisted of three portions: –First off is a generous plate of cornbread(super moist and fresh), fried whiting(über crunchy yet moist), grits(very good), smothered potatoes(equally good), perfectly scrambled eggs, and nice lean smokey bacon. –Second round of the food barrage was a tasty waffle with a tangy apple gravy compote, and two pieces of fried chicken. The waffle was nice and in conjunction with a little of the supplied butter and apple gravy you find yourself longing for more. The fried chicken was fried perfectly and seasoned well too. –The clandestine ending was a choice between three available cake slices: yellow chocolate layer cake, wedding cake, and a chocolate strawberry shortcake. I decided on the chocolate strawberry shortcake(being a big chocolate fan), and I was rewarded with one of the best pieces of cake I have ever eaten; super moist chocolate cake, velvety cream, and a sweet layer of strawberry compote in the center with a fresh strawberry. I was literally getting tingles with each mouthful of this delicacy. Please try this cake if you go to Kim’s In the Mix! Service was excellent with our waitress being very attentive in refilling our coffee(which was very good) and in bringing each delicious portion of the brunch right after completing the previous portion. At the end of the meal, Kim’s mother asked us how we enjoyed the meal and we both assured her we would be back again, and soon. Conclusion: As Unilocal describes 5 stars; this is «As good as it gets!»

I really want to give more stars to help promote local businesses and they were so nice… Their food didn’t blow my mind. The amount of butter and oil they put in their food certainly did though. Definitely not for those of us who are watching what we consume. I couldn’t eat much of the side dishes since they served them in clear bowls and I could see the fat accumulating in the bottom. Service is above average. Nice people.
