Walked past the Globe this weekend and there was paper on the windows — looks like this establishment is CLOSED. Too bad but perhaps a renovation is happening and a fab new concept will open soon. I’ll keep my eyes open and ears to the ground and report back!

Among the clubs, ho hum and pretentious venues of Glenwood South, Globe is a fine food standout. Chef/owner heath Holloman has a flair, and we have enjoyed everything we’ve tried there. The Tuna Tar Tar with ponzu sauce appetizer is fresh and tangy. The Duck Confit small plate is wonderfully melt-in-your-mouth. The pan seared salmon is cooked to crispy perfection, and the housemade fettuccine is enormous and tasty. The atmosphere at Globe is understated, with warm wood panelling and a small, intimate setting with a modern touch. Service is friendly and attentive. The wine list is very nice. And with bottles at half price on Wednesdays, dinner here is a bargain!

My take on Globe in one sentence? The most underrated restaurant in Raleigh. That’s right, after dining at Globe on several occasions I found their food and service to be right on par with the owner/manager’s previous reputation at Bistro 604(possibly my favorite restaurant in Raleigh before it closed). Why is it underrated? Never have I seen more than half the house full on a Friday or Saturday night, which is a shame given their high end food at very reasonable prices. The location is convenient, the décor is neat(love the bathrooms), and the service is speedy and attentive. I’ve really enjoyed their tea-smoked fish, chicken, braised greens. I commend them for using Larry’s Beans and having perfectly mixed drinks. Their desserts are also terrific. Interested in a fantastic meal, without the wait? Go to Globe.

If I had to pinpoint one thing I don’t like about Glenwood South, it’s the crowds. Most of the spots along the strip are wall-to-wall people on any weekend night, not to mention the lines to get into the most popular spots. At the same time, I can’t help but be suspect of any place that is empty at 10:30pm on a Saturday night — enter the Globe. We spent about 20 minutes waiting in line outside Hi5, and decided it was too cold for that kind of wait. As we walked back down Glenwood, we noticed the«No cover» sign outside Globe and decided to stop in. When we walked into the bar, we doubled the population — and there were three of us. We decided to have a drink, since it was warm inside and the easy bar access was nice for a change. We ordered our drinks at the bar, had a seat and drank. We were there for about 15 minutes, and there was little change in the number of people there. I had a Yuengling, because the décor tipped me off that the cocktails might be a little pricey. One of my friends with cash picked up all the drinks, so I’m honestly not sure how much my beer cost. If you’re looking for a very relaxed environment, I’m not sure why you’d go to Glenwood South. But if you do, and you’ve got a little too much money in your wallet, you may want to head to the Globe this weekend.

When the Globe showed up on Glenwood, I was fascinated. Up until this point the street had been home to primarily trendy bars, not trendy restaurants. Some friends of mine and I gawked at their menu and fancy décor from outside a few times before I actually ever went to the restaurant. After going once, I have to say my first impression of the place were pretty accurate. It seems like it’s a fancy restaurant just for the sake of being a fancy. The food wasn’t all that good, and while the décor was pretty to look at it was hardly worth the price we paid to eat there. Not horribly expensive, but not very good either.

With a name picked to showcase the fact that Globe’s menu draws from all across the world, this restaurant is probably one of my favorite places in the city. Globe offers an eclectic variety of flavors from all over the world, presented in a unique context. I recently tried the Spinach Salad and the Smoked Pumpkin Ravioli for a dinner, and they were both totally different then anything I’ve had before. The salad was a bit more cohesive then the Ravioli, which seemed a bit«scattered” — that is, too many things crammed into one dish without really coming together. The salad on the other hand had blueberries as well as a blueberry vinaigrette dressing, all served on a bed of spinach. It’s definitely going down in my mind as one of the finer salads I’ve ever eaten. This seems like it would be a great date place, the décor and atmosphere definitely compliment the unique approach to food that you find here, while still being very classy. The candle on the table candle on the table and small hanging lights definitely set everything off perfectly. Just be prepared to part with some money, as most entrees are in the thirteen dollar plus range.
