Now it’s far from Broadway, but it certainly IS an outstanding option in the arts for Tri-Citians. The Richland Players Community Theater is a cool venue in Richland’s Parkway( ) and shows several(generally five) live theater productions annually. Richland Players Group heralds back to 1944 during the boom of the WW2 work taking place on the Hanford site — an effort to infuse culture to the then(and still) sleepy community. The theater was purchased by Richland Players in 1971(it was an old movie theater from the ‘40s). This really is a community organization in that all the actors, directors, and other staff are locals, and I believe their work is all volunteer(atleast my friends worked for free!). I think this is what really is special about this theater(and all theaters like this). Now I’ve gone to a few productions years ago, and the production ranged from being strictly minimal to some having nicely ornate sets. I’ve had some real favorite shows, and there were some I couldn’t get into, but that’s what’s beautiful about theater. It’s all a connection to the audience. The theater itself is fairly bare bones. The lobby is nice & staffed with friendly folk. If you want to buy a cup of coffee or sweets, they have you covered. You can also pick up a program here. In the theater there is a quite a bit of seating available. The chairs aren’t the most comfortable, but that adds to the«authentic» feel of the night. So slap on that tie & suit, or slip on that evening dress and heels, and head down to the theater!
