Agee’s Bicycles

I’ve been here frequently over the past three years, and was initially impressed with their professionalism, helpfulness, and their honesty. I’ve never felt pressured to buy anything I indicated was outside my price range, and frequently I’ve been given free advice on how to avoid certain costs. They will continue to have my business as long as I am in Richmond.

Came in looking for a bike without knowing anything about what I was looking for, as I haven’t really ridden one since I was a kid. Dave asked all the right questions to help narrow down my choices and helped me find the perfect bike! As soon as I walked into the store he was ready to help and answer any questions I had, unlike sales representatives at other bike stores in carytown/​the fan. I explained that I hadn’t been on a bike in several years and simply wanted to have an alternative mode of transportation to get around the fan, while still being able to have something I could take to more «hilly» areas in Virginia. Dave listened to my concerns about being a little nervous to get back on a bike and helped me find sometthing I was comfortable riding right away. I ended up with a Raleigh 7 speed that he explained as basically an «all purpose» bike. So thrilled with the decision and grateful to Agee’s for all of their help! Thanks guys!!! I had been looking at bikes for a few months around Richmond– ended up settling with Ageeś. Great staff (bought from Hami) — very knowledgable and helpful. Myself not not knowing much about bikes, Hami showed me multiple bikes, explained in detail the pros and cons of different features, and helped me find the right fit for what I was trying to do.
I would absolutely recommend purchasing here.

Went in today to pick up a bike I had on layaway. Dave was very helpful getting me setup on the bike. Very knowledgeable about his products too! Doesn’t pressure you into buying the most expensive stuff if you don’t need it

i have been in Richmond for over 3 years and I have found the store on Broad to be one of the best stores in my cycling career. I’ve been an avid cyclist for years and have lived and cycled around the world. Jay Coleman who runs the store is very, very knowledgeable and treats the customers he works with professionalism and courtesy. I highly recommend this store to the beginner and experienced cyclist if you’re looking for a new bike or service.

Sometimes, they don’t have what I want in stock. Wanted a cable without a lock — didn’t have one — had to buy one with a lock. Bought an Avenir pannier. When I went back to buy another one, they didn’t have a matching color. The salesperson offered to get one from another store, which would necessitate going back another day. The only advantage retail has at this point in being able to walk into a store and buy what you want on the spot. Otherwise, you might as well order from Amazon. I’ve been an Agee’s customer for years but may look at Carytown Bicycle Shop.

I walked in for a bike tune-​up but was totally turned off by the attitude of the staff and overpriced bikes it was a complete change from the shop close to my place in Chester I ended up going there and had a better tune-​up for half the price.

Agee sells bikes in the $ 3−4k range so I felt weird coming into to fix my cheap Schwinn bike. Fixed it. checked my brakes, lubed my chain, very understanding that I don’t know bikes. Didn’t pressure me into a bigger purchase.
They told me a few things I should look out for, but they were very nice about it. If I ever decide to plunk down the money for a ‘real bike’, I’ll come back. Not sure why people are hating on them.

They really need to step it up a notch to compete with nearby bike shops. The staff is less than excited to be working there and have no personality (at least while they are at work). The store is almost sad.

With every passing year, this place gets more depressing to look at. That goes for all of their locations. Dimly lit, bars on the windows, overhead florescent lighting, no music or any ambience… it’s just a bummer of a bike shop. I’ve been in the Carytown location many times over the years, from trying on clothes, looking for helmets, and getting my bike fixed. The experience has always been varying degrees of «meh.» The west end location is cramped and overstaffed, making you feel hurried to make a decision.
Ever since the Carytown location closed its repair shop years ago, it takes an extra day (at least) for them to take your bike to the Midlo store for repair and then to bring it back. No matter how small the repair! And even if they do have the simple part you need, they won’t let you fix it in the store! Are you kidding me?
A former employee told me recently that the Agee’s family long ago made it clear that the only reason they keep the Carytown location open is to say that they’ve been around for so long. Whether that is the case or not, they surely don’t give it much love.
Not only are there much nicer shops in town (like 3Sports out near the Hugenot Bridge) but now that Caryown Bikes has relocated to the same block as Agee’s, the contrast in business models could not be more stark. CBC’s door is usually wide open, the staff is super friendly, they can often fix your bike while you wait, the bike selection is wider and more diverse, and they are so clearly part of the community they serve, rather than just a placeholder for a company slogan.
Hate to be so harsh, but sometimes even «institutions» need a wake-​up call. In my humble opinion, Agee’s needs to either come current or call it a day.

Agee’s Sucks!!! Remember the theme song that rocked but the store not soo much. I went into buy some grease and thats what I told the clerk. He then asked me in a snotty tone you mean lube for your chain. Its common for customers to ask for grease when they mean lube. I have worked in a bike shop and its happend to me a few times. So I answer no I need grease to pack bearings. The guy then grabs all the grease lays them out and thats it. I have to wait for another sales rep to come ring me out. There wasn’t another customer in the store. What could be soo important he had to walk to the other side of the room to rearrange some bottles.

not helpful at all, they dont have a service shop and don’t know what they are talking about. they were rude to my wife and i and we will not be giving the bike shop our business. Suggestion… be nice to your paying customer! it might help.

Though I have yet to buy a bike from Agee’s, I have to say that I’m impressed with the professionalism and knowledge of the staff here. I’ve been in several times to look at bikes, and each time have been met with a staff member who knows their stuff. They really take the time at Agee’s to find the perfect bike for you. Also, they make sure that you are fitted correctly on the bike, and don’t let you ride around looking all awkward if a bike just doesn’t fit your bod. I’ve, so far, been into Carytown Bicycles, Agee’s (Carytown and W Broad), Conte’s, and REI. I’d recommend Agee’s in Carytown over the other options.

I had my rear wheel (gears and all) stolen and came to Agee’s to purchase a replacement. While my bike was there, I asked them to convert my quick release seat to a not-​so-​quick release one.
When I came to pick up my bike, they hadn’t swapped the quick release, and there wasn’t a tire/​tube on the wheel. Even after I purchased a tire and tube, they refused to put it on the wheel for me, even if I paid them. Instead they sold me some tire levers, and told me to put it on myself. Except I wasn’t permitted to do so in the store.
So instead, I got to sit in the heat over on a bench at Cary Court, trying to figure out how on earth to get the tire on the bike. I hadn’t had my bike very long, and had never put a new tube/​tire on before. Eventually a passer-​by took pity on me and gave me a hand.
I can’t think of any reason why I’d ever go back there again.

Agees Bicycle Company is a family owned and operated business that has earned the respect and loyalty of the locals. With three convenient locations, Agees’ has been serving Richmond since 1910!
I have had my bike repaired here and they did an excellent job of giving it a complete once over. They are the only Trek retailer in Richmond and thus have the widest selection of this brand in the area.
Agees prides itself on offering full bike repair, sales and will even assemble a bike for a customer. They also offer a full range of accessories for the enthusaist and casual tourer as well. Bike racks from Thule are sold here as well.
The staff are all enthusaists and can speak to your needs with a great deal of expertise. This location is full service and serves the downtown, fan, carytown, museum district and near West end.
