I was having trouble finding a place that would fix my tablet, and the ones who did were quoting 200 or more for what we thought was the problem. Thankfully, my dad recommended this place and a very nice employee was able to find the real problem and fix it in less than an hour for an extremely reasonable price. I definitely recommend!

Okay, so I stopped here on Saturday. They’re in the space formerly used by Side 1 Records, behind Sprint and G&S Jewelers and out front of Kroger, Yamato, and the rental place. However, I had a long talk with the owner and his employee/friend. They seem to have a lot of good experience, and they’re able to do more than just ship your electronics somewhere else to be fixed. I have more gut faith in someone who knows what to do rather than someone who will just replace a part, a.k.a. card swappers. Given Wayne County’s location, we’re not exactly close to repair depots and even then, it’s sometime, the luck of the draw. They showed me some impressive looking HDMI cables that were inexpensive for what they were. When you compare prices in town at Best Buy or HH Gregg or even in Dayton, Cincinnati, and Indianapolis, the deals may all be in this store. Tuesday, I took a fourth generation iPod into the shop to have the battery replaced, a battery which I had ordered some time ago. I could not get the case open with the available tools due to my inexperience. Adam, the owner, was available to open it fairly quickly, but unfortunately, the battery was impossible to fit. In any case, I’ve ordered a different battery that supposedly works just fine, so he’ll finish the work at the time when the battery arrives. The battery arrived from a company called iFixit, who are well-known for their tear-downs of electronics products. They shipped the battery through the USPS so that it arrived in just under 2 days, by First Class mail. The replacement on Thursday went quickly since the owner of the shop had already opened the case. It was surprising to see the iPod working again after such a long time. As with any business, take careful steps and make sure you’re comfortable with everything being done, and ask questions, even if you are comfortable – knowledge is power. They have my late 2004 Apple PowerBook I took there to have repaired. The display has turned red when starting and, just like the fluorescent lights slowly dim, it’s dying. Rather than try to find the whole display or buy a similar machine to turn into parts, Adam found the fluorescent backlight tubes(those things we used before LEDs were used as backlights) and will repair the computer using those. Since he’s not just detaching a cable and replacing the whole display unit, there is actual work to be done. [Update: 2012.12.17] The owner called this morning to inform me that the work was finished. He’d been waiting for the part for maybe a week – not his fault. The part is new, not used so it should have a decent lifespan, which seven years(if I include the flickering couple of years) for the other was quite good. Since he wasn’t just replacing the display, there was a lot of disassembly to be done. The display works quite well now without the red cast or the flickering. He showed me the part with the burn marks at either end of the fluorescent tube, and they were consistent with an old fluorescent bulb you’ve probably removed from an overhead fixture. He was ever so diplomatic about the work, but as I tried to tell him up front – it would be a pain. Nicely done.
