Our friends took us here for breakfast on Sunday while were visiting them. Apparently the guy behind the counter is only there on Sunday mornings and makes Venezuelan food!!! We left it up to our friend to choose what we ordered — she ordered everything. We started out with these cheesy bread things that are completely indescribable but amazing(I think they were toquenos??). They were like mozzarella sticks but the bread was different, and somehow there was so much more cheese and it was melty and mmmm We also got some empanadas filled with beef that were hot and had just enough spice. Of course we ate those with the Venezuelan green sauce(yum!) They then brought over dulce de leche cake that was so fluffy and delicious!

Need loose, dried spices/herbs? DONOTBUY before stopping in here. Seriously. Waaaaay cheaper than supermarkets. They also have all your mexican food needs in here, a small butcher station, packaged meats, friendly service, and a little taco stand! Now, the tacos here are what’s getting the 4 stars. I’d like to rate it down a bit to 3.5 or 3.75 if I could but I can’t so I won’t. The reason why I’d rate it down is because Habanero is right across the street and their tacos are slightly better. You still get made to order, meat piled high, onions, cilantro, and salsa verde on the side. And at $ 2 each they’re cheaper than Habaneros. Oh and the best part of this bodega, no hassle on credit card minimums. I stopped in and grabbed something that was maybe $ 3, and stupid me, I didn’t have cash. But they were okay with it and didn’t look mad about it either.

Since leaving Durham last year, I feared I would never find a taco as good as Chubby’s Tacos. Well, Unilocalers, I am happy to report finding this place. This is a great little market with a great selection of all things Latin at incredible prices(particularly the spices). But this place has a something extra to offer with their small lunch counter in the back. On this trip in, DH and I ordered a bunch of the al pastor tacos(priced at $ 2 each). They were served up in soft corn tortillas and dressed with chopped onion and cilantro(just like they should be). Their salsa verde comes on the side. You may want to do to the finger test before pouring it over your taco as it is pretty hot and spicy. But it complemented the flavors of the al pastor tacos beautifully. Washed down with a bottled limeade, it made for a great little lunch.

Awesome little market with unbelievably low prices and the friendliest staff I’ve ever met. If you are looking for rare and/or unique items, especially for baking, this is the lace. I picked up POUNDS of guava paste for just a few dollars!
