Haunts of Richmond

My boyfriend and I just got done with the Shadows of Shockhoe tour, and we had a good time. It was raining pretty hard, and I felt for our guide because she seemed worried others on the tour were losing interest because of the inclement weather.
I loved it and I would gladly walk around in the rain and listen to ghost stories, so I was hooked regardless. I got the feeling our tour was cut short due to the weather which was a bummer to me. I really wanted to hear about the tunnel collapse and anything else she could throw at me. I’ll definitely be back for their other tours, though!

There are two «haunted» tour groups in Richmond; we chose this one. We did «Shadows of Shockoe Tour. You meet and start the tour at, appropriately enough, Poe’s house in historic Shockoe. Then you walk to several different locations where the guide tells you the tales. She was intelligent and knowledgeable about the history and ghost stories for Richmond. It wasn’t terribly long, and our son, a very precocious 9yo, had a great time. Nothing that would be innapropriate for young kids. We have done tours in Savannah and I must say there was less to see here. However, it was a fun activity and wasn’t expensive so GET OUT THERE and get your BOO on!

I took the Shadows of Shockoe tour, which stopped through the back grounds of the Poe Museum, near the old Church Hill train tunnel, the masonic building, Main St. Station, and a few other places that are now houses and restaurants.
Our tour guide, Jeffry, was really nice and well-​informed. He was easy to understand, entertaining, full of cool facts, and really knew his stuff when questioned.
The tour lasted a decent amount of time, a bit over an hour. Cost was $ 13 (I bought my tickets online; it’s cheaper that way). I think that’s a little bit pricey but it’s a unique experience.
I would give it more stars if we would have actually entered a few of the buildings. That would’ve really spooked me. The story of the tunnel collapse freaked me out to no end, but I won’t give all the details away.
I’d recommend this as a fun Halloween/​Fall activity.

This was fun, I thought!
I’ve been on other tours in different states where I dealt with guides who talked and walked, or talked too quickly, were boring as cardboard … Marcia wasn’t any of these things. On the Shockoe Bottom tour, despite guiding us through solid rain for almost 90 minutes, she was articulate, fun, and animated. I get the feeling, though, that we may have skipped a few stops bc everyone was so soggy, but what we did learn was interesting and, well, haunting.
On my next visit to richmond, I’ll be back for another haunts of richmond tour. It’s a fun way to occupy a weekend evening. But don’t go in the rain!!!

So, we went on this a few years ago. It was pretty cool. The staff was friendly and it was nice to learn more about Poe (the Raven is a fav). It’s a walking tour and you didn’t get to go inside of any building but it was still fun. Did get some good orb pictures… And one that looks like a WITCH in the window of this old factory!!!

Went on Saturday. Was expecting something more than what I got.. . Our guide was just dresses in plain clothes and we walked to a few sites and she told some REALLY boring stories. All in all this thing is lame, maybe my 80 year old grandmother would have enjoyed it, but this is not for the young or young at heart. Too much money spent to be bored out of my mind. In conclusion. Don’t go on a Haunts of Richmond tour, see a scary movie instead.

Ghost tours aren’t just for Halloween anymore and these folks do some fun ones from May through October. Hosted by the authors of «Haunted RIchmond, The Shadows of Shockoe», the tours have various themes.
Some leave from the Poe Museum (like the special Poe tours and the Shadows of Shockoe tour) and others like Capitol Hill leave from the Berkeley. The walks take a little over an hour, peppered with local ghost stories, legends, and a good dose of history.
My favorite is the pub crawl «Spirits and Spirits», a bar hopping tour of the watering holes of RIchmond’s most infamous drinkers. Now you can buy tickets in advance on the website for a bit less than the door ticket price. For visitors, this is a fun way to get to know the city, and for locals, a new way of looking at old things.
