If you want a slightly hipster brunch spot, this is your place! Went here for brunch and we appreciated that it was easy to park and there wasn’t a wait. The food was above average, but breakfast is a pretty easy meal to make well. Be aware, specials for that day do run out! The service was below average but I think it was based mostly on our particular server.

Lulu’s is a name that I hear often when it comes to the Richmond brunch scene. Whenever I pass by there’s always a huge crowd outside and when I sneak a peek it seems like everyone is enjoying their food. With that much attention, I was expecting a one-of-kind brunch experience but I was disappointed with my first visit here. There were no problems surrounding the reservation my group had made but issues started first arising when we had to wait 15 minutes for our drink orders. About half the group had ordered waters and even those took quite some time to make it to the table. Service from then on was pretty inattentive and when it came time for our checks we were again waiting for quite some time. The restaurant was packed and I understand service sometimes suffers for that reason but the service wasn’t just slow. it wasn’t really there(I have made a second visit and the service is better but still slow). As for the food, I didn’t enjoy the famed Red Velvet Waffle. I was really excited about this dish but the waffle, while very pretty, was very bland. I don’t think this dish is worth it’s $ 10 price tag. The chicken & biscuit was okay but salty. I’ll come back for group outings and such but Lulu’s doesn’t make it to my list of favorite brunch spots in Richmond.

Good atmosphere. Good service. Nice menu selection. However, some food items were a little greasy. «Infamous» buttermilk biscuits tasted like burnt oil. You could tell the biscuit would have been really good if not for the burnt oil flavor-not worth the extra $ 2.50. My son’s cheeseburger was slathered in oil. bun and all… he couldn’t finish it. My daughter liked her egg croissant. My wife said she liked the Huevos Rancheros. described it as very fresh. The potatoes, served on the side of my kid’s meal, had a strange taste and were a bit too spicy for them-neither ate them. I had the Shrimp & Grits with Eggs Benedict. very good! While there were some highlights, the food was not good enough to justify going back with the family. Three stars max.

REALLY!!! They will not seat a party of one at a table so you have to hover around the bar for first-come-first served seating? If I had known, I wouldn’t have bothered to come here but since visiting from out of town, I thought I’d try the popular spot. Hope the food and service is worth this rude policy.

Went here for Saturday brunch and it was great! We came and had reservations for 9:15(there were only 3 or 4 other groups of people there, but I wanted OpenTable points!). Our server was very friendly and our food came out at a reasonable time. However, I ordered sausage instead of the given bacon and that came out after my meal(waffles) did which was fine since I got an extra side of potatoes by accident! It got crowded pretty quickly and by the time we left, about 10:15, there were people waiting for a table. Come here and try it! Would definitely recommend having a reservation if you are coming by later in the day.

This used to be my go-to for brunch. In the past– i have experienced excellent bar service, delicious food, and hardly any wait for a table= a trifecta of brunchtime awesomeness. But in recent visits, something has changed. Not sure if they have had a chef or management transition, but the quality has really gone down hill. I should have known something was up when we were seated immediately during prime brunch service, and the café was basically dead. But i thought we got lucky and hit a lull, and boy was I wrong. During my last visit i ordered a Chicken and Biscuit– It arrived at lightning speed– almost in time with the mimosas that we ordered. The chicken and biscuit had great potential: Fried chicken topped with honey on a biscuit with scrambled eggs, sausage gravy and roasted potatoes. Sounds awesome– but the lightning speed in which we were served should have also been a tip off. The first thing i noticed was a pool of grease in the center of the plate, likely from the eggs. The«scrambled eggs» were unidentifiable– they arrived as a a disc of oddly colored white-ish stuff– nothing that looked like an egg, and definitely nothing that looked like scrambled eggs. the next was the chicken breast– a small serving of a thinly pounded half way breaded chicken breast topped with a garnish of real human hair. Not a single person working in the kitchen was wearing a hat or hairnet, and the kitchen –which is visible fro the seating area was quite dirty even when viewed from nearly 20 feet away. the server was extremely apologetic, and removed my plate, asking if i wanted anything else but i was too grossed out to continue. I awkwardly waited while my date finished his meal– which he said he enjoyed. I would love to go back, but i would love to see some improvements in the cleanliness of this location, as i suspect i’m not the first to experience this kind of issue.

Everybody always suggests Lulu’s for brunch and when my boyfriend came to visit I thought this would be the perfect time to try it out. We waited almost 45 minutes for a table — not a huge deal because we just walked around. We finally got a table and I ordered my favorite brunch meal, Eggs Benedict and my boyfriend ordered the chorizo frittata. Super disappointed in my eggs benedict — the eggs were over poached and were totally dry inside. The best part about it is breaking it open and having the yolk explode over everything. If this place is so busy you would think they would be able to poach an egg correctly. Overall, it was a pricey brunch — two meals + two cocktails cost us almost $ 60 with tip. I wouldn’t go out of my way to visit again. EDIT: After my previous review a manager contacted me almost immediately and apologized for the poor visit. I thought that was pretty cool and appreciated him reaching out to me so I booked a reservation for a birthday brunch yesterday(5÷22÷16). The service was great — I forgot our servers name but she was sweet and attentive even though they were slammed. The food, however, was a total let down again. I ordered the corn beef hash with a side of bacon. It was literally a big plate of grease. There was so much oil at the bottom that I had to switch plates(I took the top part of the dish and put it on the plate with my bacon). Again, two meals, a coffee, one cocktail and a side of bacon was $ 60 with tip. I really wish I could give this place a better review since the service is great but the kitchen definitely needs improvement!

Love love love love this place! Came here for brunch with my parents and will definitely be returning. Ordered the Shockoe Bottom Florentine without ham, huevos rancheros, and the famous red velvet waffles! All so delicious we scarfed it down in seconds. The servers were also extremely friendly and gave great recommendations! You have to try this place!

I hear rave reviews about this spot and finally tried it out. I am sooo happy I did. Although there was about a 25 min wait to be seated it was well worth it. I had the crab omelet that was packed with crab meat and the famous red velvet waffles that were to die for. The pecan spread was delicious. The mimosas were also great. The atmosphere was diverse. My friend ordered the chicken and waffles which I was a bit disappointed to see, it looked like he had little nuggets not a piece of chicken. We were seated close to closing time so I’m thinking they used what they had left for his meal.

As a lover of brunch, this place definitely hit the spot! I got the fried chicken & red velvet waffle which was delicious! The fried chicken was perfectly seasoned and was even better paired with the gravy. The potatoes that came with it were a little salty for my liking but overall the dish was amazing. I also tried my friend’s scrambled eggs with lobster biscuit which was very tasty as well. Definitely make a reservation beforehand as the place gets packed. The only complaints I have is the wait time for the food and since the place is small and packed, it can get loud and hard to hear what others are saying.

I went here with a friend after reading reviews on how delicious the brunch is and my word it is good! I got the lobster omelet, delicious doesn’t do it justice. It was so fresh, cooked to perfection and hot! The location is pretty small but they get a lot of people in there without problems. We made a reservation beforehand and I’m glad I did because it’s busy! Such a cute place with a great menu. The only reason for 4 stars is because the waitress didn’t check on us, many times we were without water but other than that it was great!

Finally made it to my local brunch place today and got to take the fam from out of town. I have to say it’s nice it’s in walking distance and we got there shortly after they opened so we didn’t have a wait. Our waitress was spectacular keeping all of us high on caffeine with an endless supply of coffee and also waters. My dad and brother got some of the specials — brother got the corned beef and cabbage and it looked AMAZING. The Corned beef was grilled and not fatty in the least. My dad got the lamb omelette… He said it didn’t really have a lot of lamb in it but what was there was good. Little nephew got the French toast and I’ve never seen him eat it faster or Keep drenching it in the cinnamon crème fraîche. I got a biscuit and gravy and the biscuit was homemade and the gravy was actually pretty light! I will definitely be making this one of my go to spots for breakfast!

The 1st time around I was a pick up order. I just had to hv some Red Velvet Pancakes! Called ahead, food was ready & hot! 2nd go round, we ate inside. End of the brunch shift. Many of the waitstaff were just sitting at the bar. I was confused bc I thought they were customers that weren’t been waited on, until I saw them walk bk inside the kitchen area & the other side of the bar repeatedly. Kitchen floor covered in biscuit & waffle batter. & everyone acted like they didn’t see it! Ordered huevoa rancheros. Eggs suck! Too big & fluffy. Waitress stated they use real eggs & don’t add milk or anything to them. I beg to differ. There was def an additive to mk them grainy. Sig other ordered biscuits & gravy. It was on special & they ran out of biscuits! Yet the waitstaff had biscuits on their plates. Will not be revisiting. The red velvet pancakes were awesome! Like heaven in my mouth, but my dine in experience was not up to par

Brunch is my favorite meal and Lulu’s always hits the spot ;) It’s a pretty decently sized restaurant, especially for a brunch place in Richmond, and it’s always always packed. Some of my favorites: Atlantic Omlette — Love seafood? This is savory combination with lobster(they don’t skimp, either), crabmeat, hollandaise and bacon served with their house potatoes. I like to get mine on top of biscuits which is really good here btw. Side note: this is a very heavy dish so it at your own risk. Red Velvet Chicken & Waffles — Perfect combination of breakfast and dessert in one delicious dish. The waffles are fluffy and really does have a hint of red velvet taste. The gravy on the side is delish too. I have no complaints with food, but service could definitely be better. Because of how busy it is all the time, they always seem to be short-staffed and the wait it ridiculouslyyyy long. There are times I’ve waited over an hour for food and it’s so hard to get a hold of the few servers that are running around. But other than that, Lulu’s is definitely in the Top 5 for brunch in Richmond!

The wait was not that bad for going last minute without any reservations. The service while waiting from the hostess was extremely great. They even offered us drinks while waiting. Our server was extremely nice and patience even though I asked so many questions since it was my first time there. My friend ordered a drink and didn’t like it, she was kind enough to let him switch it — free of charge! I got the lobster biscuit(I think that is the name) and it was delicious. The flavors were just spot on yummy. We also got the red velvet waffle. At first, I thought it was going to be super sweet, but it was not! I didn’t like it with the strawberry compote, but other than that, it was yummy as well. What made the food taste better was the customer service our waitress brought us. I’ve always believed that food taste better when the waitresses or waiters are nice and attentive.

LuLu’s is apparently a beloved Shockoe Bottom spot of the locals, which get frequented for weekend brunch and live music in the evenings. Reservations were made much in advance, and it was interesting to see how this place gets filled up so quickly — just note that you may be lucky to sit at the bar without a reservation, but that’s taking a big chance! The hubs and I came here for brunch, and we tried the following: a Lobster Biscuit(an oversized omelette filled with what seemed like imitation crab, canned mushroom slices, and bits of lobster meat, this was a bit disappointing; while the omelette tasted okay, it seemed a bit deceiving that most of the filling was the mushrooms and of the weird-textured & –tasting crab meat), Chicken & Biscuit(fried chicken breast nestled on top of scrambled eggs, sausage gravy, honey, and buttermilk biscuits, with a side of breakfast potatoes; the sausage gravy was a little bland, and the biscuits were super dry and salty); and, their famous dish, a Red Velvet Waffle(with a side of pecan cream cheese and strawberry purée; I was a little confused as why there was cream cheese rather than a pecan-infused butter; the cream cheese was incredibly hard to spread(too cold), and no maple syrup was given; the waffles themselves were super bland and had no red velvet taste to them). The side of breakfast potatoes, which I was looking forward to, were mushy at best; they did, however, have a nice little kick to them. We received a slew of wrong orders at first, being given crab omelettes, then swapped to chicken & red velvet waffle dish, then swapped again to the Chicken & Biscuit dish that we had originally ordered; we also waited about 10 minutes to get the Red Velvet Waffle dish, as that had to be re-made. Our server was nice and efficient, but she was a bit MIA throughout our dining experience and hard to track down to get refills and our check. I’m glad I was able to check this place out, but won’t be back. +more mushrooms than lobster in Lobster Biscuit T___T +dry and salty buttermilk biscuits T____T +bland Red Velvet Waffles T___T +incorrect orders T___T +reservations highly encouraged +limited free street parking

Arrived around 1pm and it was busy as usual– Saturday afternoon — very loud music and people. Loud music= people yelling over each other to talk. Waitress {Donna} didn’t come over for 10min and we were ready to order only to find out they were out of what I wanted –biscuit/gravy, and I would have to wait 15 min. Ordered French toast instead. Waitress then didn’t have a pen to take our order and disappeared for another 3 min. When our drinks came she spilled a mimosa on my shirt sleeve, arm, and in my jacket as I was taking my coffee off of her tray which she should have placed on the table. Then she never brought me anything to clean up with– so I say sticky hoping she would come but ended up going to the bathroom to wash the stickiness off my arm and shirt. Food comes– table that came in 10 min after us sitting next to us gets their food first — they have the biscuits I asked for originally. Our food looks great– French toast and hue is rancheros. However no silverware… 3 min later server comes with silverware– says nothing. Comes back 5 min later with our check– doesn’t ask how the food is or if we need anything else– my boyfriend orders an autumn mimosa– it comes water down from sitting at the service well too long. No garnish– looks like a glass of tap water– $ 8– tastes ok. Check comes — she passes by the table without picking up card to charge 6x times. At this point my giving this place a second chance has backfired and I am ready to go. Service — 0⁄10 Food– 8⁄10 Ambience– 2⁄10

We’ve just returned from a uniquely disappointing brunch at LuLu’s. The two stars I did add are entirely for our server, who was lovely and very personable, and the space itself, which is cute. The($ 7) mimosa was almost entirely filled with ice cubes and served in a pint glass. The French Toast was covered in the promised cinnamon crème fraîche and strawberry compote; however, both toppings were cold, as was the syrup on the side, which was brought to the table in a small plastic to-go container. The cinnamon wasn’t detectable in the crème fraîche. The plate was also cold, which meant instead of the sweet treat French Toast is meant to be it was a gloopy, mushy, cold, saccharine letdown. In addition to the French Toast I ordered a side of regular toast and an over-easy egg. While the over-easy egg was well made(runny yoke, solid white), the toast was only broiled, almost to the point where it was black, on one side and didn’t come with any butter, jelly, etc. Our server had to bring the spreads separately. Despite having some burnt edges on one side, because of the lack of toasting on the underside of the bread it wasn’t remotely crunchy like toast should be. My dining partner ordered the Huevos Rancheros. When the dish arrived at the table the plate was positively swimming in grease. The tortillas were soggy and grease-soaked. He said the home fries the dish came with were by far the best part. I know I’ve been spoiled by the calibre of brunches in DC, but every single time I’ve ventured outside the warm embrace of my favorite Richmond restaurant for brunch I’ve been incredibly underwhelmed by RVA’s offerings. I know we have some great food in the River City. Why isn’t it translating to brunch?

Red. Velvet. Waffles. That’s really all you need to know. I’d been dying to go to LuLu’s for brunch and finally got there this past weekend and let me tell you, it was definitely worth the wait. The sister restaurant to Millie’s, another Richmond brunch powerhouse, Lulu’s holds her own in a city packed with brunch options. Some may even argue it’s better than Millie’s. I am normally an omelette aficionado and while I was tempted by the southwest omelette, I decided to try something different and went with the Huevos Rancheros. The serving was huuuuge and packed with flavor. They came with a side of breakfast potatoes that were some of the best I’ve ever had. My brunch companion, an eggs benedict ADDICT, naturally chose the eggs benedict option and proclaimed it the best he’d ever had. I tried some of the asparagus off of his eggs benedict and they were definitely little green spears of perfection. But what I really came to Lulu’s for, what I’d dreamed about for eons, were the red velvet waffles. We couldn’t possibly leave without trying this much lauded breakfast specialty could we? No, we couldn’t. Being the fatties that we are we ordered up a batch of the waffles to share and holy cow. I’m not normally a waffle person but I am most definitely a red velvet person and these babies lived up to their hype. They are served in four little quadrants which make them perfect for sharing and come with a side of pecan cream cheese, some type of strawberry compote that was AMAZING, and of course syrup. The breakfast cocktails are flowing, though not as prominent as they are at Millie’s, and unlike Millie’s you can actually make a brunch reservation which is awesome. Lulu’s definitely deserves to share more of the brunch spotlight in Richmond with her sister restaurant. She more than holds her own!

Average 3 stars for the overall experience~ Good things. red velvet waffles! My go to for brunch. For a dinner dish, I really like the camarones con arroz — crab, mussels, lobster over rice, kind of like a jambalaya. First time here I think had an omelette — sorry I don’t remember which one, but it was good! I wanted to give it a 5 but the service is consistently meh. The first time I was here, the service was so extremely slow. it was 45 min+ for our lunch to come out for our group of 5. Slow is excusable sometimes, because I can understand that they’re busy, but I when I got out of my seat to ask someone about our food, the waitstaff just mumbled that it’s coming soon without looking up. The manager had heard of this and had offered us a round of drinks if we gave it a second try, but service was still slow, despite empty tables all around us. We waited maybe 15 minutes to order, another 30 minutes for food to come out. Their dishes are good, but not sure if worth the wait. Food: 4.5 Service: 2 Overall: 3.5

Best place for brunch in Richmond! Even better than Millies. Yeah, I said it. If you come after 10:30am, I highly recommend reservations. I made a ressie at 10 on a Sunday and it was not too bad but 20 minutes later, it was packed with a line out the door. First things first: best, most creative brunch drinks I have EVER seen. Not your standard bloodys and mimosas here. Brazilian mimosas, moscow mules, poinsettia’s, and other interesting cocktails. They ALSO had the best bloody I’ve ever had, garnished with a strip of bacon and old bay seasoning. Atmosphere: Even though you are sitting pretty close to the other tables, the atmosphere is pretty bustling and loud, so you can speak up about last night’s debauchery to your heart’s content. And the restaurant is located right outside of the downtown farmer’s market, which I imagine must be fun and hoppin in the summer. Service is full of hipsters who are prompt and cool. Actually, we didn’t wait too long for our drinks or food the entire time we were there, which means an efficient kitchen and waitstaff. That’s pretty rare for the hipster crowd. Food: AMAZING! I ordered the lobster biscuit and my bf had the grilled corned beef. DELICIOUS. First of all, as a biscuit connoisseur, the biscuit was plush, fluffy and soft. Biscuit paradise! The lobster and hollandaise atop the biscuit got somehow lost a bit, but it’s lobster, you know what you’re getting with that. The house potatoes were perfectly browned and textured and the eggs were scrambled to perfection. My bf’s grilled corned beef exploded with flavor and he wasn’t sharing! And the asparagus on his plate had a nice sear and wasn’t soggy, which is pretty hard to do when surrounded by eggs and potatoes. Man, this was probably the best brunch experience we’ve ever had. EVERHAD, I said! This isn’t a huge restaurant but it does a good job of giving you a lively dining experience, with friendly service and absolutely amazing food. This will be the only place we go for brunch when visiting Richmond in the future.

After my previous review, the manager, Duncan, reached out and apologized for the service(or lack of). He hoped that we could give the café a second shot and offered a round of drinks on the house. Because the brunch we had was really good, we decided to go back for a second time — and this time, for dinner. The dinner was just as delicious as the breakfast! We had fries, empanadas, spicy shrimp tacos, the bacon and egg burger, and camarones con arroz(mix of seafood items). We all enjoyed our orders. My tacos weren’t really spicy, but they had great flavors. The burger was humongous, and anything with eggs is just pure awesome. The drinks/cocktails were good. I think my friends especially loved the Strawberry Mule. I found the drink a bit strong — which is not good for me since I’m slightly allergic to alcohol, but awesome for everyone else! We went on a Saturday night. It was not particularly busy, and we did find that the service was still a bit slow. However, our server Mollie was super friendly and sweet. She apologized for the delay at the beginning and was attentive throughout the night. Overall, this visit did change how I feel about Lulu’s, and will be back more often! I still think the food is a solid 4 star, but I am impressed with the manager’s customer service — addressing our concerns in a professional and friendly manner. So I’m bumping it up to a 5 star because of my experience as a whole with this place!

I got the eggs benedict and it was alright. Nothing to be crazy over but that’s probably because I’m a brunch fanatic and have too high of standards for brunch for my own good. The french toast was alright too… it was a little soggy for own liking. Overall, I don’t care to come back. But if my friends wanted to go then I’m more than happy to make a visit.

I’m ashamed to say that it has taken me this long to go to Lulu’s! Good God Almighty was that good! We are so, so spoiled here in Richmond. We have all of this great food in our backyard. Even though Lulu’s is a sister restaurant of Millie’s, in my opinion the food at Lulu’s was lightyears better. I enjoyed the amount of options, the space itself, and the service way better than at Millie’s. I’m totally a pancakes, french toast, and waffles type of brunch girls. Omelets are great for times when I’m wanting something a little lighter. It seems like at Millie’s, some type of omelet or breakfast enchilada is all you’re going to get. Even though Lulu’s didn’t have pancakes on the menu(grr), they did have french toast and waffles which I was super happy about. Luckily someone else in my party was into sharing, so we ordered two different entrees and split them. I got the french toast and she got the Atlantic Omelette. The omelette stood out in particular. That was one of the best I’ve ever had! It was so flavorful. I love love love seafood and this was like the perfect seafood extravaganza wrapped in egg. Bravo, Lulu’s.

A great brunch spot! I had expected Lulus to be rather small, just like many other popular food places in Richmond, but it was surprisingly pretty spacious. The inside has the booths laid out in a pretty cool looking way and it is very clean. Our waitress was great. She helped my friend and I pick out our dishes, letting us know what her favorites were and which ones were most popular(which was almost every dish). I got the Chorizo Frittata and my friend got the Lobster dish and we both thought they were great. Nice portions, but a little bit on the heavy side. Then again I guess that’s just how brunch food usually is. The only reason why im not giving Lulus the whole 5 stars is only because I wasn’t amazingly wowed or blown away. However, this is definitely one of the top, if not the first places that I’d choose to come to for brunch.

Admittedly it was Sunday Brunch, but despite having a reservation, getting seated and being served was extremely slow. We ordered the Huevos Rancheros and the Lulu’s Benedict. Huevos Racheros were very hearty and pretty tasty. The Benedict was on par with other Benedicts, however I don’t think it came with the correct ham. I say this because there was another variation of a Benedict available that was made with surryano ham, while the Lulu’s was made with country ham. The ham I got looked dried and nothing like a slice of country ham and was much crispy and saltier than country ham I’ve eaten. I know, ham may be ham and they may have their own variation, but I just wasn’t used to that texture and flavor. Both dishes came with a side of breakfast potatoes that I felt were over salted, so it was hard for me to appreciate the other seasoning. Ambiance was great for Sunday brunch and I’m sure for other meals. Large windows at the front provided great lighting and I enjoyed sitting at their little booth like tables towards the middle of the restaurant. The bar area seemed really fun to sit as well. Overall, service was mediocre and food was simply 3⁄5 for me so I am unsure if I would recommend or return in the future.

It has come to my attention that I may not have been very clear in my original review of LuLu’s, and that I may have come off as entitled and ungrateful. I wanted to take the opportunity to clear it up: Hostess/seating experience — excelled and accommodating, really got it right Waitress — super nice, had great suggestions and very knowledgeable Food and Drink — very very good and came quickly Manager — has completed ruined my experience; I had a mild distaste(if even that) when we originally visited, but that didn’t ruin my experience at all. However in my multiple interactions with them after the fact on Unilocal,I can honestly say I personally will never return, and it is 100% due to this one, singular person. So much so that I am dropping my review a star, solely on this bit of «customer service». So to be ABSOLUTELYCLEAR, I really liked LuLu’s and had an overall great brunch experience, but in light of how I have been treated today(and trust me, I worked in the food service industry for YEARS, and regardless of how irritated or unappreciated I may have felt, I would NEVER reach out and aggressively confront a CUSTOMER), I will not be returning.

I FINALLY got here for the legendary red velvet waffle.(I’m always gone on the weekends and never have gotten around to it.) And it was as damn good as everyone claims. Seriously, I never want to eat another waffle in my life if it’s not this one, and however they brew their coffee, it’s weirdly exceptionally delicious black. But seriously– the strawberry sauce, that pecan cream cheese, the fluffiness and lightness of the waffle: this is the only brunch I will ever want anymore. Definitely on par with Denver’s Snooze. Beautiful. A delight! I’ll be back a.s.a.p!(Side-note: Get all of the waffle’s fixin’s on the side, because it keeps the waffle crisper and you can portion what ever sauces, whipped cream etc. you want accordingly.) PS: They serve Gavina coffee, for anyone interested, because it’s damn good.(I asked, then went home and bought two tins off Amazon.)
