Okay, so I normally don’t write Unilocal reviews but this one is worth it. I’ve been coming to this restaurant for MANY years. Since I was about 5 years old it had always been my favorite. Now I haven’t tasted much of there menus but my favorite dish there would have to be the fried fish with the beans and rice. That’s my go to plate & I always seem to go for it. I don’t live in the area anymore so I have to travel here & it’s always worth it. I suggest you get the Guacamole before your food comes in & order the fried fish !! If not the camarones a la Diablo are also very delicious as! But this being my favorite restaurant the quality in the agua de horchata has gone down and wish it was better. But I can live with it & very much recommend this place!

If you are looking for a fast and delicious bite to eat, this is your place! I have tried their burritos and fajitas and they are outstanding. The chips are perfectly made as well, along with spicy assortment of salsa’s. This place seemed to be a little underrated for my experience, because I have eaten here dozens of times and have never had anything negative to say! So yummy!

It’s been an old time favorite for over a decade. I love this little family owned business. The food is alwaysssss fresh and flavorfulllllll… they have outside seating and some seats are perfectly in shaded areas. Parking is minimal but you can always find street parking along the 23rd Street corridor.

I highly recommend the Bistec Ranchero plate. The sauce is perfect and the vegetables are fresh and cooked to perfection – slightly sautéd, not over cooked. The Huevos Rancheros are amazing for breakfast and there is comfortable outside seating. The neighborhood looks a little sketchy, but don’t let that stop you from enjoying good Mexican food in Richmond.

Haven’t been here in over 20 years. I was in town this weekend with family and I just had to stop by and bring the family with me too. Still tastes amazing. Feels like home. We ordered the huevos con chorizo, short stack pancakes and horchata. Love it!

It gets pretty crowded between 11:00 — 12:00 on weekdays. Their burrito is okay, it takes awhile for the food to come so you should definitely phone in your order and take it to go if you are here for lunch. The portions are a good size and the burrito comes with chips and salsa.

It’s Friday night and when you had a 2 hour commute from work, you can’t conjure up the energy to cook. I exclaimed to my husband, I feel like having a burrito. He looked at me as he normally does when I have my cravings and asked where to go in an exasperated but happy tone haha I chose Portumex because it was the closest one to where we were traveling. I had been craving a reputable breakfast burrito. I called in our orders. My choice consisted of eggs, potato, refried beans, cheese and rice. My husband wanted a healthy carne asada burrito substituting refried beans for black beans and refraining from the carbs in the rice. The total was $ 18 and some change which is a pretty normal charge for burritos nowadays. It took about 15 mins to get our food ready. Freshness is worth the wait. Size is reputable. Each burrito comes with a bag of tortilla chips and green and red salsas. The salsas are lacking. They were like flavored water. The burrito filled me up. I loved the cheese and beans. It was the right allotment to the eggs. My husband wasn’t impressed but he is impartial to the mission’s burritos. Otherwise, I’d go back to try it again minus their salsas. I would tell them that could use some work. Bold embodied flavors need there.

Been coming here since I was a kid and I love this darn place. Always get the shrimp and steak burrito every weekend. The salsa here is to die for. Nobody can touch my Portumex!!!

First time eating here. Not a good place to go for a veggie burrito. Bland refried beans and rice, and the chips taste burnt. I got to go, so maybe the dine in is better. Not what I was expecting for a 4 star reviewed place. I’ll take Talavera in Albany hands down, even though this is much closer to my house.

When in Richmond, check this place out. Came here for lunch. Lightning fast service, delicious chicken burrito. I even had some just past middle-aged ladies invite me to sit with them. I can’t say if that’s included for everyone else. Check it out.

I tried this place for breakfast and ordered the breakfast burrito and chilaquiles. I thought the breakfast burrito was pretty pricey, but when it came out, it was large and extremely delicious. There was a good amount of chorizo with each bite. The chilaquiles were tasty as well and a good size portion. The only reason I didn’t rate it 5 stars are the relatively high prices, but the taste and portions of the food make the prices well worth it. I will definitely be coming back to this place.

Good food and good service from the cashier to the bussers. The red salsa is yummy but spicy… Green salsa is even more spicy. Good size tacos and free chips and salsa??? Need I say more? They have their own little parking lot which makes it a little easier to get to. A gem in Richmond. I recommend it.

I came in looking for a quick alternative to typical fast food fare. Had a grilled fish taco which was healthful and delicious. Next, I had the tostada mexicana and that too was yummy. Service was professional, courteous, and quick. I would definitely come here again for a more substantial dinner plate.

Well, hello unassuming Mexican restaurant. Once a house, but now a popular Richmond Mexican restaurant, I was expecting desolation, not a pretty poppin’ off place. Sunday’s. Why? Because it’s pretty inexpensive, the food is hearty, tasty and ambiance is quite nice. Order up at the counter than find a table. They have both front outdoor patio seating, indoor seating or plenty seating in the back of the house — both inside and out. The menu offer’s a variety of items from burrito bowl style items to tortas, tacos, burritos to larger chicken and steak plates, to a pretty extensive breakfast menu. Me? I go for the diet plate. Far from diet, the dish consisted of strips of thinly pounded steak with onions with a side salad. It was plentiful and good. The salad was super basic and came with ranch that was by far one of the worst ranch dressings on the planet. I suggest mixing it all up and getting that steak juice all up on that salad. The chips and salsa were dece. The salsa lacked heat and depth, a bit on the watery side, but did taste homemade. If you opt for the guac it’s a pretty hearty portion and oh, so smooth. I’d say, go for broke and get the guacamole. Tortillas were tasty and definitely seemed they were freshly made/homemade. I can’t guarantee that, but I know tortillas and these definitely didn’t come from Safeway. The large plates of enchiladas and plates that were rolling by caused severe food envy. Looks like I’m gonna have to be back to try those bad boys. All in all, a solid spot in Richmond. Nothing too crazy, but I’d come again if I happened to be in the ‘hood.

Could not believe the review that said the folks at Portumex are rude! I’ve been going there for years, and they’ve always been unfailingly polite, courteous, friendly, &c – as well as fast, and excellent food. They’re just great.(FWIW, their name is a reflection of the owner/couple’s Mexican-Portguese heritage. Love the name!) I often phone my order in and come ten minutes later to pick it up. Once or twice I’ve either not been able to get them to answer the phone, or I’ve been put on infinity hold. But that’s rare and no doubt because they’re busy because, you see, they’re popular, because they’re GREAT! They’re just a lovely place.

Absolutely yummy. You have to know what to order and how to order to get the full satisfaction. Tipping ahead of time helps too.

If you find yourself in the San Pablo/Richmond hood, it’s impossible to resist the parade of «erias» lining the streets: pupserias, taquerias, paleterias, heladerias, you name it. It’s clear that some seriously legit Mexican grub can be had, but where to begin? We asked one of the locals and she pointed us to Portumex — a fave among her colleagues in the area. The 4-star Unilocal average confirmed the truth — this place is a crowd pleaser. Not only is their menu the answer to any and all Mexican food cravings you’re combating, the ambiance is utterly charming. Like a little yellow hacienda, they’ve put some love into the place with cute patio seating and a fresh bowl of spices on each table. The guy taking orders was a little gruff, but we didn’t feel terribly out of place with the steady flow of diverse customers coming in. We took home chicken enchiladas, fajitas, a carne asada plate, and a very sweet horchata which I nursed for a few days(seriously good in coffee, ya know). My $ 6 enchilada plate included 1 enchilada, rice and beans. That’s practically Taco Bell prices for an amazing, filling meal. The fajitas and carne asada also came with rice & beans, guac, sour cream and tortillas. My kind of happy meal! While the to-go option is great, Portumex is totally worth lingering at too. Good thing they don’t deliver, because I’d have them on speed dial todo los dias.

What a find! I do believe this is one of the better Mexican restaurants in the area and it is now very near the top of my favorite places for Mexican food. I like the building; it is a converted house that has a very warm and welcoming feel. Now for those people who might worry about going to Richmond and this area, yes, it does have a reputation for crime. I was waiting for my car to be serviced on the corner; I walked to San Pablo and back before I ate lunch. I did not feel too uncomfortable. With that out of the way the food is the reason I’ve been here several times. I’ve had steak rancheros, and cerviche tostado, chili rellenos, and S had fried catfish. When R met me here he had a chicken tostado. I don’t think they like the food as much as I do. It is the steak ranchero with pleasant gravy like sauce covering the tender, not overcooked strips of meat. I really like it and can’t think about not ordering it to try something else. The chips and two sauces that they bring to the table taste great. The food is so tasty that as I write this I feel like hopping in the car and feasting. The servings are generous and I had enough to take home each time I have eaten here.
