This place might be unknown to some. I have had the box lunched delivered but stumbled upon this location after touring the museum. The atmosphere on a beautiful day is quaint and peaceful in the garden patuo. I forgot we were in the middle if the city. The food is simple and amazing and plenty of it. We loved the potato salad and delightful deviled egg. All the sandwichws are fresh. Ample roast beef and the tuna on wheat was yummy.

We toured the Valentine and then went for a classic box lunch, with the upside down cupcake done their way. Perfect for after a morning of touring, the outdoor gardens were a quiet oasis in the middle of the city.

My husband and I stopped here for lunch after visiting the Museum of the Confederacy. It’s a little hard to find,(we needed to ask at the building next door), but glad we found it. It is not fancy at all, it is a little counter where you order and then you can eat inside or out in a little garden area that is very nice. What is great about the place is the food! All fresh made, and all very tasty. My husband got the roast beef sandwich, which was good, but I got the cold plate of chicken salad, with a side of potato salad, and deviled eggs. The potato salad was one of the best I have ever had. And the chicken salad was full of chicken and seasoned just right. Great lunch spot if you are in that area!

Good food, but kind of overpriced imho.

Wow, this is truly a diamond in the rough. I am in Richmond for a seminar and stumbled upon this little gem. The food is basic but reflects the down home cooking you would expect from being in the south. Eating out in the court yard with the sound of trickling water from the fountain was a very serene and rejuvenating experience. Absolutely would recommend for a quick bite to eat.

Great little find while my wife and I were visiting downtown Richmond, VA. Stopped by at the recommendation of Unilocal. We were greeted by Robin a very helpful lady that told us the history of the place. She had passion for what she was doing and it showed. My wife had a chicken salad sandwich that came with potato salad. The sandwich was made on home made white bread. She loved the sandwich and we both agreed that the potato salad was great. I had a deviled egg sandwich that was good. The meal came in a box referred to as a box lunch. The contents of the box was topped with a deviled egg which was a nice treat. We also both ordered a chocolate cake which fit into the box. Since it was a nice day we sat outside in the court yard. This was a great lunch and I recommend anyone in the area to visit. Thank you Robin for the excellent service…

I love this place. It’s reasonably priced, just the right amount of(delicious) food for lunch AND served in a garden courtyard with optional indoor seating if it’s too humid outside. Plus it’s so close to the hospital and graduate school campus. What more could you ask for? Have never been disappointed with anything I’ve ordered here.

The tiny cupcakey things were amazing, we won’t discuss how many I had for lunch. The sammich was a bit less exciting, possibly because I was –really– disappointed about the horseradish sauce option for my roast beef. I know it’s a problem the whole country faces, but finding there was sugar [rather a lot from the taste] in my horseradish sauce was sort of upsetting and it nearly ruined an otherwise decent lunch. Somewhere with good attention to detail in other areas could probably manage to make some sauces in house, I think, though I grant you packets of sauce are easier when packing boxes to go as they often do.

What a nice little find tucked away behind the Valentine Museum and MCV Putney House. After placing our order at the counter, BFF and I enjoyed our box lunches in a bright sunny space with wonderful view of the Valentine Museum garden, making it a nice spot for a ladies lunch. I opted for the box lunch which included a sandwich of my choice(chicken salad on a fluffy white roll), a side, a deviled egg(how southern!), a homemade cheese wafer(also southern) and cute little cupcake for dessert. BFF had a salad with a scoop of chicken salad(which also came with a cupcake for dessert). Yum! So if you find yourself around MCV at lunchtime, duck into the garden for a nice lunch treat.

So happy that they opened a location here at the VCU Medical campus, it is so much better than the previous tenants that really weren’t that good. Come here and grab an awesome boxed lunch, made to order, and then if it is nice enough, sit outside in the gardens and enjoy a beautiful day. I recommend the egg salad sandwich on white bread and the crushed almond cupcake… YUM.

If you want to meet a nice young doctor, the courtyard Café at the Valentine Richmond History Center is THE place to be in the spring, summer, and fall. It’s literally right next door to the hospital and the docs love to dine alfresco for breakfast and lunch in the scenic courtyard. Expect light fare from sandwiches and salads to fruit and bagels. It’s open from late March to the end of October from 9 to 3 and from November on from 10 – 2(and there is indoor seating for the cold months!)
