I went back to southbound with a very open mind. I loved it. Everything we had was perfect. The Baratta, salad, whole fish. All perfect. Great wine. Our server was excellent.

Food was good; although, for the price I have had much better downtown. Our waiter seemed completely disinterested and at times annoyed to be working. It was as if he could not be bothered to even pretend to be helpful. This combined with the okay food assured that we will look elsewhere in the future. It is a shame, because we were really hoping for a nice restaurant in this part of town.

The food presentation and atmosphere was perfect for a brunch situation. Service was excellent also. Get there early for early bird’s cinnamon bun special. To die for! We will definately be back. Hair of the dog great too!

I love this place! I have been here three times now, and it’s so nice to have a restaurant of this caliber on the south-side. The wait staff is super knowledgeable and the food is delicious. This visit we asked the server to make some recommendation, both recommendation we would have probably not ordered on our own and they were fantastic. We had an octopus appetizer and the duck entrée. The wine she picked out for me was spot on as well. It’s always a great experience and great food at southbound.

We made a 5PM reservation and got a little excited and arrived at the place about fifteen minutes earlier. As expected, we had to go back since they were in the middle of setting up for service. We ended up getting a snacky-snack from a BBQ joint next door. We came back for our table and ended up changing our mind so we sat at the bar. Surprisingly they have an awesome cocktails menu. We ordered six different things from the menu and they were all delicious, I was so happy and excited about the service, food, etc until the point where we got our mussels. Long story short the mussels were«off», I normally never send anything back to the kitchen out of respect however this time it was inedible because the mussels were«off». They took it off the check and offer if we want something else from the menu and we respectfully declined the offer. I would’ve given five stars if it wasn’t because of the damn mussels. Highly recommend this place! Ohh btw, did I mention that the location of this restaurant is super awkward. It’s located within a mall strip. Easy and convenient parking spot though.

Wonderful to have such a great place so close to home. Now that they have been open for a while the need for reservations has died down, we are there more often — which is good for me because we are really last minute impulse eat-out people. I personally like the place for their handicapped access and super friendly accommodating staff. I also love that the chefs are open to alterations to fit food preferences and vegetarian options. Always have the option of small plates in salad selections. The changes in menu for seasons are also refreshing. I do miss the acorn squash now that it’s spring, but trust that something new will wow me the next time we go. YUM!

We loved dinner at Southbound and we are thrilled that they now offer Sunday brunch. We went this morning for their first day of brunch and enjoyed everything we tried. Fried chicken and grits, local veggie Benedict, and duck hash. The Bloody Mary and Michelada hit the spot. We appreciated the 10:30 a.m. opening time. I look forward to going back.

This establish is a stand out, on several levels. Not only is the food superb but the staff is truly exceptional. My son, who happens to have autism as well an intellectual disability, also has a highly developed palate and extensive experience dining out. The wait staff as well as the management treated him with the utmost respect and dignity, responding to his taste and sense of humor to make his evening just as special as he is. The oysters and mussels were terrific as was all the seafood, but again, the kindness of the staff made the night unique. Thank you and we will certainly be back!

We went to try Southbound during the Restaurant Week. The restaurant is located in a good area, in my opinion, across from Gelati Celesti!(excuse my spelling…) Although it was not regular menu, food was definitely delicious! Serving size is a bit small but it didn’t bother me. We had fried oysters, onion soup, steak, chicken with polenta, even mac & cheese for my 18 month old son. All yummy! Dessert was Ok though. Service was great and very kid friendly. It was a busy Friday night, but we didn’t feel the service was slow at all.

I waited and waited for Southbound to open then when it did, it seemed almost impossible to get a reservation! Well a year went by and on the way home from Stony Point Mall, on a whim, I called and they had ONE table available! Yup, we scooted right over! There are so many things to like about Southbound. First I’ll mention the food. We ordered a salad to split and two pasta dishes. Without asking, they split the salad onto two plates. Nice Touch! It had a lovely light lemony dressing and left us wishing we’d ordered two! I selected the daily pasta special which had shrimp and fresh spring peas in a creamy sauce. Perfect seasonal dish. From the menu, Schweety ordered the rigatoni which was hearty and delicious. I love that they make their pastas in house. It really makes a difference. The service is great. Our waitress had a good sense of humor and was fun to have her serve us. Also a longtime favorite bartender has joined the staff so it was good to see him, too. The apmoshere is a breath of fresh air in the ‘burbs. Upscale but relaxed. The kind of place you can come for a monumental event or just a burger because you don’t want to cook. I really look forward to coming back and dining on the patio or having that burger at the bar.

Really enjoyed this place. Sorta upscale. The night our party of three went it was prix fixe all week doing some charity drive which was fine. I had a small bibb lettuce salad, the sirloin grilled with fingerling potatoes and greens and finished with a salted caramel panna cotta. Everything superb quality and very good service. Would go here again.

I made a reservation for my husbands birthday. They printed off the menu with Happy birthday and made him seem so special from the hostess to the waiter… it was so lovely. The meal of catfish and crabcakes was amazing, as usual and it was topped off by a complementary dessert with a candle for my husband. The staff’s attention to detail is unparallel and the service is stellar. Get your butt there as soon as you can, you will love it!

I love Southbound. They have a great bar, and the food is always outstanding. I love that the south side finally has its own good restaurant that is worthy of special nights out AND just-because meals. I always make a reservation to avoid the wait, the line at the door can look daunting on the weekends.

Dove in here on a rainy Sunday night. Completely casual attire but the food was exquisite. Some of the best we have had in Richmond. The pimento cheese appetizer was delightful and the rockfish superb. Even my son’s fish and chips off the kids menu was authentic and so worthy that he ate the whole item. Truly worth visiting Southbound if you get the chance.

I have been dying to try this place out since before it was open! The hubs and I decided to make reservations for our anniversary dinner and we were not disappointed. While this is an upscale restaurant, they welcome their younger patrons with open arms. We had our six year old daughter with us. She was given a kids menu and some wiki stix(bendable wax sticks from the local toy store next store) to play with in lieu of the traditional paper placemat and crayons. We started with the sausage plate as a starter. For entrées my husband had the pork steak, our daughter the mac and cheese, and I opted for the duck breast. The sausage plate had three different house made sausages plated with mustard and a delicious pimento cheese. Delish! Out entrées didn’t disappoint either. The kids mac and cheese was a dish I wouldn’t mind ordering myself. It had a duper creamy four cheese sauce. It’s so refreshing to see a place serving tea Mac and cheese instead of the stuff that clearly came from a box. The pork steak was perfectly seasoned and cooked to perfection, as was my medium rare duck breast. Every sauce, vegetable and spice was well thought out and each complemented the main ingredient perfectly. My only disappointment was that I waited so long to come in! I will be back for sure!

We enjoyed a wonderful New Years dinner at Southbound. Although the menu was prefix, it had some excellent choices and was still reasonably priced. The crab bisque for a starter was good. The main course of duck breast was perfectly prepared, I thought the crispy skin was great. I loved the chocolate cremuex rounded out the dinner nicely. My wife had the beef tartare and crab cakes that were wonderful as well. The service was prompt and polite. A nice atmosphere but it was had to judge on New Years eve. I thought the beer selection was a little lacking.

We had visited Southbound when it first opened and I’m glad we went again. The menu was more diverse(more vegetarian options — thank you very much!). The food was fabulous. Elevated flavors and nice combinations. The service was terrific. Our waitress was helpful and attentive. The apps were the stars — fresh baked bread, pimento cheese and pickles. Best comfort food you can get. The entrees are unique so the menu can still be considered limited but it’s easy to see how the restaurant has grown and progressed. Looking forward to going again soon!

So happy to have finally tried this place. While this may be located in a strip mall, this is no mall restaurant! We arrived on a busy Friday evening(around 6pm or so) without a reservation. But the hostess was able to seat us quickly at a tall-top in the bar area. We were promptly welcomed by the bar manager, who provided us with run down of the Happy Hour specials and menus. I had read about Southbound making their own tonic water so I had to get a G&T(even if it is no longer summer). DH got a Happy Hour cider special. We also ordered fried clam strips from the«Snack» menu($ 2 off during Happy Hour) while we made up our minds about dinner. The house-made tonic water did not disappoint. It completely transformed the taste of the gin in my G&T cocktail. I may never buy another bottle of Canada Dry for my home use again! The fried clam strips for our snack were exceptionally well prepared and served with a side of crab remoulade for dipping. Light, crispy and absolutely delicious. I could have easily made my dinner with several orders of this. For dinner, DH opted for the Oyster Po’Boy sandwich special, served with a side of slaw and fries for $ 13. I was in the mood for something heartier and ordered the Bistro Steak($ 24), which I ordered rare. DH certainly enjoyed his sandwich. But let me tell you about my dinner! My steak was gorgeous and cooked to absolute perfection. Rare, not raw, and seasoned with a bit of garlic and pepper. Just enough but not too much. It was served with fingerling potatoes, broccolini, and a bit of hollandaise. Even though we were seated in the bar, we enjoyed good service, even with the bar getting busier by the minute with a Friday night crowd. But what impressed DH the most about the service was watching one of the waitstaff clearing off the table next to us, noticing the table was a bit wobbly and then taking the time to make sure to level and stabilize the table before the next party would be seated. Taking the time to pay attention to those details makes for a great place. One that we look forward to returning again and again!

Definitely a trendy spot right now. It is a location that really needed an upscale restaurant. Very convenient to get to right at Hugeunot and Chippenham in the old Stony Point shopping center(not to be confused with or accessible from Stoney Point fashion park one exit up). Not very big place and has established a very good crowd especially at the bar. So reservations are pretty much required.

My wife and I had a chance to check out Southbound for date night. Having never been to that area we didn’t know what to expect. Unfortunately the first impression wasn’t fantastic. It’s located in a strip mall with no real definable character, but I guess is wasn’t bad either. The atmosphere for west Enders of Richmond reminded me of Tazza Kitchen but not quite as put together. To start though, the service was great. The bar tender and servers were very friendly and helpful. I ordered and old fashioned And my wife got wine. Both hit the spot. For mains, I got the special monkfish and she got the double cheeseburger. The monkfish was fine. Well cooked, but otherwise somewhat lackluster. The burger was better. They overloaded the special jam which made for a sweeter than desired experience but solid non the less. Overall, we probably won’t be back. The scene, food and price were all just middle of the road. Interesting, because their other restaurants are amazing.
