Solid Chinese food with good service. Food was tasty and came out fast. The sesame noodles were good. We had general’s chicken and two types of beef. I would go back and recommend it to people in the Stamford/Greenwich area.

Hunan is a good place to get Chinese food that is more authentic than American. We have been patrons for more than 20 years. The people that own Hunan are very nice and friendly. Dim sum on weekends is nice. And it beats driving to Flushing, Queens on a weekend. While I frequent Hunan often it’s my first time checking in and giving a review. I must say I was surprised when Unilocal prompted a question after«do they take credit cards» with is this place a «dive»…really Unilocal? What kind of question is that to ask? And NO it is not a dive. The food is good and the special menu offers some nice extra special dishes. Let’s face it: authentic Chinese is nowhere to be found in Connecticut. And nearby Westchester locations are a crap shoot at best. Hunan is doing a good job and the weekend crowds of die hard regulars is a good indicator of what they offer.

Hit the spot for dim sum. Not the best, but the only place in this area. The cart was ready with all different dishes ready for the pickings. My fav and got two dishes of chicken feet. If you want to try dim sum, it’s worth coming here without going to the city or White Plains. It’s best to come after 12 or 1230 when all the different dished are cooked. We came here at 1130 when they opened and the main dishes were done and by the time other dishes were ready we will full.

Consistently good food. We have been here for dim sum a few times. It’s nice to sit at a restaurant and eat good dim sum without dealing with the crowds and madness in NYC. Wouldn’t say the service is particularly warm but I find that is often the case at Chinese restaurants. The workers have been very nice to our kids however.

The hubby was craving dim sum, so after searching on Unilocal this place came up. The pictures looked good, so even though the reviews were not that good we wanted to give it a try. Service was slow, no one ever ask if we wanted something else to drink besides water, and we waited and waited until the foodcart came, we choose to try the Sui Mai(our favorite dim sum), some Hao Kao and a another shrimp and por dumplings. The siu Mai was average, the other dumplings were non memorable but the one we did like a lot was the Hao Kao(shrimp dumpling), UNTIL we found a hair in the dumpling’s dough, then everything went down hill. I do understand that does mistakes can happen, but with the poor service, average food and piece of hair, we were done. Service? 2 stars Food? 3stars(average) — 1 for the hair :-/ Wont we back :(

My children(4yo &3yo) love coming here. The staff speaks Cantonese to them. They are quite friendly & pleasant to us whenever we dine here. Char sio bao and the shanghai dumplings are Chinatown delicious. I miss Hong Kong and whenever I crave Cantonese cooking, I often seek this place out. My favs: 1) char siobao 2) sautéed gailan 3) five spice chicken feet 4) snails in black bean sauce 4) pork dumplings

My friend told me about this dim sum place so we tried and honestly I was so disappointed. The selection of dim sum was very small, and I can’t get over how rude and unfriendly the waitress was. She completely ruined our dining experience there. I will never go back again.

one of the worse places I ate at. I was driving to boston and got really hungry and stopped around here and wanted some Asian food because it never steered me wrong. when I saw there was a minimum you had to order to sit in and dine I should have noticed something was wrong. the minimum per person was $ 12. I had to order things I didn’t want to meet their requirements. I had their soup, it wasnt half bad but the main course were terrible. the flavor was mismatched and tasted unpleasant. I think we ordered egg foo young. it looked like plain brown sauce over egg. the waiter was nice actually. all I remembered from this experience was the food was bad. this does not feel like hong kong at all, it feels like a fast food Chinese food with horrible cooking.

Tried the dim sum and it’s really good! Had all my favorites like chicken feet, shrimp dumpling and shobao with bbq pork inside! They had carts and I think this is as close to chinatown dim sum as I’m gonna get in CT. I’ve been eating dim sum since I was a baby and I approve!

And the Worst service/attitude” goes to… the waitress literally THREW our plates and chopsticks. There was a dirty napkin in front of me when I sat down, and my tea cup was still wet… Horrible food, dim sum included — chicken feet did not taste fresh(yes, there are fresh tasting feet. as much as that sounds sounds contradictory) Ugly and dreary décor

Perfectly lovely dimsum. We came in on a Sunday afternoon for dimsum with the family. It was busy, but not packed. The selection was delicious, and I really liked the dumplings and humbow. Everything was so simple, but it was deliciously satisfying and no-fuss. I recommend the vegetables as well for a breakup to the fried and bready options. The only complaint I had was that the ventilation of the restaurant meant that the sterno from the carts filled the room with a petroleum smell that was unappetizing. Perhaps it’s too be expected for dimsum, but it was rather off-putting. I will come here again with my family, as that the food was good, and I am especially interested in their non-dimsum options.

I guess I’m spoiled because I used to live along the Route 9 corridor west of Boston — an area with large Chinese and Indian populations and a dozen or so terrific restaurants from those cuisines. Most of the Chinese food I’ve had in and around Stamford is pretty lackluster, but I refuse to eat at P.F. Chang’s, so Hunan Café is a decent alternative for the basics. I have not been impressed by their fancier attempts, however, and find them overpriced for what they are. Stick to sweet & sour shrimp, vegetable bean curd soup and other standard fare, and you’ll get a decent meal at a fair price. Weekend dim sum is pretty good(hey, I can’t make it myself), but the selection is pretty narrow.

Like many restaurants of its kind, Hunan Café is a dying Chinese restaurant, giving way to P.F. Chang and his cookie-cutter horrors. The cowardly American palate prefers consistency over originality, leaving places like Hunan Café in the dust, unable to keep up. Despite their location in the ultra-upscale community of Greenwich, CT, Hunan Café is old, run down, and just kind of sad. Don’t get me wrong, the food itself is VERY good, especially their Dim Sum Sundays. But the experience that surrounds the food is highly depressing, leaving me to often seek greener pastures for Chinese food. Frankly, I’d rather go to Yangtze Riverside, order takeout, and sit outside on a nice park bench. It’s too bad, because I wish only the best for places like Hunan Café.

Many of the previous reviewers mention, the curt, rude and unfriendly staff. Couple that with inept order taking and being argumentative when attempting to have the waiter correct the order. Food was OK, but service is to be desired. There has to be better places to spend your dining dollars in this area. Skip this place for the attitude alone.

I used to really enjoy getting takeout from Hunan Café. We hadn’t been back in about 8 months and decided to try it again. The experience was terrible from start to end. The woman answering the phone was incredibly rude. Not the kind of treatment you’d expect — we weren’t even calling at a peak hour. She was very sharp and harsh. If the food was amazing I wouldn’t mind dealing with the treatment. But when we got our order my food wasn’t even what I asked for. That being said, it wasn’t tasty for what it was. I think the sauce consisted of salt and oil. My husband did not enjoy his duck. I didn’t have it so I can’t comment on what was wrong. And to top it off — No fortune cookies(I know that’s just a small detail, but still). Bad experience overall, and I wouldn’t recommend. They only thing Hunan Café has going is they are really close to where I live. If you do go, stick with the lo mein, spring rolls, and egg rolls.

This is a good take out place for chinese food. Love their beef broccoli and so far, everything we’ve tried here is decent. We usually just call for pick up but the few times that we’ve actually eaten inside, they’re very curt, but not in a rude way. We have also tried the dimsum and it’s pretty good, especially the shumais.

I’ve been several times for the Dim Sum on the weekends(12 – 3). It’s been hit or miss. Some days it’s fresh and delicious, other days it’s rubbery and old. I’ve tried a couple dishes from the regular menu and they have been very good. I wish the Dim Sum was more consistently fresh. Until then, 4 stars.

I went there for Dim Sum on a Sunday morning. It was fairly good. The food was nice, and very close to what Chinatown of NY has. Staffs were friendly, price wasn’t too bad either. I didn’t try order from Kitchen, but I think I will go back for Dim Sum for sure. Compare to the one that New Haven has, this Dim Sum has less choices, and smaller dishes too. However, the size doesn’t matter much because you actually cant eat as many different type dim sum as you want. Give it a try, you might like it.

Let me start off by saying most of the food is really good most of the time. Why a 2-star review? First and foremost, they use MSG in «everything»(their words, not mine). I did not realize this until I had taken a few bites and was very happy with the food(pan fried noodles, beef stir fry). I called to ask and sure enough… I think I’ve spoken to the same person every time I’ve called for take out and he’s not very nice. He has not messed up my order though so I guess that takes priority over friendliness. The restaurant itself is pretty tacky inside. We really only went here(past tense — no more now that we know about the MSG) to pick up food and I would say that’s how it is best enjoyed.

I can say with certitude that this place offers some of the best dim sum around — the best in CT and probably better than all in NYC and Flushing because it’s authentic but clean. If you’re looking for«westernized» Chinese takeout and the ambiance of a TGIF with waiters who become your best friends upon first meeting you, do not go here. This is a small place located in a strip mall next to a drug store, bakery, coffee shop and post office. The waiters can come off looking stoic, but are actually very nice and funny once you get to know them over time(been going here for years on weekends). The food here is great and dim sum is served in the afternoons only on weekends. Some dim sum dishes I suggest are: shrimp dumplings, shrimp siu mai, pork siu mai, steamed barbecue pork buns, salt and pepper calamari. For the daring, try tje salt and pepper prawns, fried taro or bean curd rolls.
