Great IPA selection, not to mention the fact that they are a top of the line meat market. As you step inside you feel like you are in Brooklyn. Great job keep it up South Wedge

I am so happy to have discovered this place. Adam and I stopped eating beef on a regular basis a couple of years ago and haven’t really cared… Until I came here. My first trip was for a ramen Wednesday. Although I felt it was a little expensive for a bowl of ramen and a soda, it was totally worth it. The bowl of ramen was huge! I couldn’t even finish half. Thankfully they are kind enough to give you containers to take your left overs home. 1 bowl can literally feed two people. While getting my ramen I decided I needed some beef. I asked Adam what he wanted out of the case for dinner and he picked steak. He was expecting a little measly hunk of beef like we would get at Wegmans. When I got home and showed him the steak, he was thrilled. We paid $ 10.00 for 2 fresh steaks that were about an inch thick. I had some homemade steak seasoning that I put on them and then grilled them. They were melt in your mouth amazing. I don’t think I have ever had steak that good that cost under $ 30 at a restaurant. I can hardly imagine how good these steaks would have tasted if I put a little more effort into it. The next week I was back. I had been wanting beef stew and Adam wanted burgers. The stew beef was amazing. It literally fell apart in the stew and the pieces that didn’t fall apart were so tender they melted away in your mouth. Needless to say, we didn’t mind the leftovers we had. I got ground beef with bacon in it for our burgers. It went beyond our expectations. When I told Adam there was bacon in it he had a thought that it was cooked bacon bits. It blew his mind when he figured out it is ground bacon in with the ground beef so it is a constant mix of beef and bacon! Imagine every bite having the perfect ratio of both! The beef and bacon kind of have a smoky taste to it and would be perfect on the grill. They use everything they can and anything humans wouldn’t eat becomes dog treats that you can buy. Treats for the whole family! In addition to all of the amazing pork and beef they have, there is a full food menu so you can get lunch and there are many fresh sides and food they freshly make and pop in the freezer for you to purchase. You can easily get entire meals here. The only negatives I can think of: the parking lot gets filled up quickly and you may have to park on the street, the measuring system isn’t exact. I asked for ½ lb of stew beef and got just shy of 1 lb and I asked for 1 lb of ground beef and got 1 ½ and lastly, only a negative if you are easily creeped out — don’t come here if you are not okay with seeing eyeless pig heads. Overall, this place is amazing. Adam and I have stopped buying beef from Wegmans and will only get it here for now on and I urge you to do the same. I am in love with Wegmans, don’t get me wrong, but sometimes the grass is greener on the other side.

For a butcher shop, McCann’s has a lot to offer! Aside from cut meats, they also have hot and prepared foods, beers on tap and daily specials. I was there Wednesday afternoon for lunch and had a couple different things. I treated myself and got the daily special, which was ramen, a side of beef fat fries and a bread pudding. All great choices. The ramen was savory and more on the heartier side. It’s rare to have broth this meaty. The ramen was packed with even more protein: the pork katsu and egg. The bread pudding was super sweet. I was surprised with the first bite but quickly acclimated to the taste. Overall, a great place for a quick bite or a grab and go. A must for meat lovers and foodies.

I joined my fellow lunch Unilocalers for Ramen Wednesday this wintery afternoon cuz… soup. I got the ramen(duh) and it came in a huge bowl! The barbequed pork was crunchy and a bit sweet and well received by my tablemates. I’ve never had crispy pork in my ramen and it was delightful! I had Fiz pop which I haven’t had since like 1985 and the bread pudding for dessert. I really had a great time and a great meal. My only two dislikes? A touch cold in there and the bread pudding was savory not sweet enough. Otherwise stellar lunch!

Still great selection of meats, if you come at the right time. I’ve been coming here quite consistently for a while and I wanted to mention a few of my favorites. I loved their bacons(duck and beef bacon are great) Their stocks in the freezer case are so much better than anything you can find in the supermarket. They may seem pricey, but it’s super concentrated, so you need less than usual. Their bulgogi sandwich is so good, and I learned that it’s available all the time. Unfortunately, their ramen is only available on Wednesdays.

I have been a fan of McCann’s on Facebook for a bit and hadn’t had the chance to go over to their store. I was waiting until I had availability on a Tuesday afternoon so I could head over there to get their bulgogi Sammy lunch special. I was unsure exactly where on S Clinton it was so I did drive by it at first. The parking lot had ample parking so I had no problem finding a spot. Staff was friendly & welcoming. Environment was open, bright and clean. From the cooler there were many options for drinks including beer. Since I was on a lunch break I opted for a local favorite. Fiz Soda. My order consisted of the bulgogi Sammy & a side order of fries. Everything made fresh when ordered. Bread was a little burnt in some spots so I did taste that a few times during my sandwich. Meat was hot and juicy. I was disappointed in the fact that it tasted NOTHING like Korean bulgogi. I am Korean so I have a lot of experience in this & also make it myself. Flavor was good but not what I was expecting. Slaw that came on top was fresh and tasteful and fries were hot & crispy. I plan to try McCann’s again for their meat but probably not for their sandwich. They did have a wide variety of meat & sides to choose from.

Been MANY times to buy meat. Was there today. Nothing in the meat case. Why??? On a Saturday? Saw a review from earlier this week. Same thing. The counter help was no help. Tough to make money at a butcher shop selling pre made frittatas. Will give it another try only because the prior experiences were so good. First time I didn’t see owner there. Update — Kevin, the owner, responded to my review. Very impressed actually. Will give it another try as I have ALWAYS had a great experience until last visit. I guess everyone is enriched to a bad day.

1st time at Mccann’s. Walked in and stood at the meat case for 5 minutes with no one helping me. There were 2 people working the case. There was one other person there who was checking out. Finally help came-asked for a steak, strip, tenderloin, rib eye, t bone, I was told they had nothing, only what was in the case which was basically less tender cuts which was not what I needed. Before I could ask anything else, the person walked away as I stood there looking at the sausages for another three minutes so I walked out. I can’t comment on the quality of meat but I’ve never been in a butcher shop where no steaks of any kind were available-my dad owned a butcher shop in Illinois so I do have so expertise on butchering. this may not be an issue for folks living in that area, but I drove 8 miles to the shop. I may add the the walk in behind the counter displayed a lot of beef aging and ready to be cut. I guess all of the people with positive reviews must have called in first-lesson learned.

Had the plate. At $ 16, I had hope it would be worth it. It wasn’t. The burger was tasty but salty. One thick patty. overly watery mac salad and decent but salty fries. The«hot sauce» was not memorable. Got a side of some kind of asian salad which was ok. Bacon cookie tasted like they use bacon fat in lieu of butter. greasy. Unimpressed. Won’t be back. Not sure they will last long as the Saturday at noon crowd was all of 3 couples. Cases were empty or dried out looking.

Had a great experience at McCann’s and I will be going back! Went in to pick up a couple steaks, I don’t frequently buy meat from a butcher so I wasn’t sure what to ask for as they have a lot of cuts I was unfamiliar with. The owner was the one who helped me, asking what qualities I like in beef, how I plan to cook it, and then suggested two different cuts. Was extremely happy with both the meat I got and the personal service. The prepared food looked delicious and I can’t wait to go back to get lunch!

I too think McCann’s is a great ‘work in progress’. So happy to have a place like this around, and I will continue to avidly support it. The owners and staff deserve our full support. they are super nice and dedicated people. Since Unilocal reviews are intended to be useful to owners, I like to keep them honest, in hopes of improvements being made when multiple reviewers may be pointing out similar issues, and McCann’s strikes me as an establishment that cares about these things. So… Homemade sausages are AMAZING. Korean sausage is especially unique and inspired. Kimchi was good, but the flavor profile was a bit off to me. Next time I’ll try the other flavors. Our whole chicken cooked up DELISH! So tender and juicy, and we felt good knowing it had been raised with care. Duck bacon was also delicious. We bought items to go, and then sat and ate lunch there, too. The fries in beef fat are inspired… ours were perfectly crisped, though decidedly over-salted(we had to make frequent trips to the tiny water cooler for cups of water… btw, they don’t sell bottled water, which struck me as really odd). The butchers behind the meat counter were a highlight of the visit. So knowledgeable, and as another customer wrote, make your decision process feel almost ‘intellectual’. Great sense of humor and creativity, too. Really, they were just super cool. What was ‘not as successful’… The Ramen. While yummy, noodly and generous, it tasted more like beef noodle soup. Which is fine if it’s advertised as beef noodle soup, but not if you really wanted ramen. The eggs were a bit overdone, the broth was on the bland side, and there wasn’t enough layered flavors you normally find in ramen. We also noted they had used spaghetti noodles, instead of authentic ramen noodles. This made the dish too heavy, and we both felt ‘belly bloat’ a few hours later, which is something you rarely get from authentic ramen(ramen noodles use a different wheat than pasta noodles, which won’t bloat you like pasta will). Along with our other fresh meats to take home, we bought some prepared ribs, and when we ate them a few days later, neither of us enjoyed them much. As another reviewer noted, they tasted ‘weird’, and while weird can be good, I do not much care for weird when it’s $ 20/lb. We did look at the prepared salads case, but both quickly decided they didn’t look very good. So, I cannot comment on those, but I guess it says something that we skipped them in the first place. A week later, we returned again, to try their breakfast sandwich. Yikes, it was really not good. The description sounds amazing, but the execution just didn’t match up. I think the problem was that all the ingredients are similar… soft and fatty. The bacon was way undercooked, the ham was very fatty, and the eggs had been fried in way too much butter. The big, soft bun had been buttered as well. The cheese had melted into a greasy state, as well, and did not offer a sharp flavor… no real flavor at all in fact. It was like a big grease fest with only mild flavor to it, which just killed the experience. We both doused it in hot sauce, to try to cut the fat and give it some taste, but what it really needed was some form of ‘alternate’ texture or flavor, to round it out and make it more interesting. If the bacon had been crisped, it would have helped, or if the egg had been scrambled, or the sandwich served on a toasted english muffin or crusty bread, maybe? Honestly, I think it was trying too hard. A well prepared, non greasy egg, on a quality bread, with one delicious meat choice, and a side of an inspired sauce dipping, is what I wish they served. Not the heart attack breakfast. :) My end take is that this place has considerable promise, but is still working out the kinks. I think they’d improve greatly in the prepared foods area if they brought in ‘guest chefs’ to work with, or at least a professional chef to handle the prepared foods. They clearly have highly trained butchers, and a well-trained chef would make this place rock right off the charts. These guys deserve our patience and support, so I will keep going back, and hopefully edit my review to reflect some better overall experiences. I would really love to give them 5-stars at some point.

They don’t grill for free like they used to, but I’ll still buy meat here since it’s reasonably priced and convenient for me. I always feel good about getting meat here knowing that it comes from local farmers and is butchered freshly. I like to come here mostly for the prepared foods. The greens, grilled veggies, japchae(Korean noodles with beef) and sausage sandwiches were all delicious. And if you get a chance, try the kimchi mac ‘n cheese. It’s one of my favorite rendtions of a true classic.

I stopped at McCann’s for lunch with a few colleagues last week. Overall, we had a great experience, the food was delicious and reasonably priced. The interior is very cool-looking, too. If you’ve never been there, I would strongly recommend that you review the menu online before going into the restaurant. While I had looked at the menu before going, my colleague did not. When we got there, there were no printed menus or signs. When my colleague asked what the lunch menu items were(other than the special, for which there was signage at the counter), the staff person only pointed to the special and mentioned that she could build her own sandwich. It would have been nice to have a menu to look while we were there.

Sammy bulgogi and beef fat infused fries are amazing here. I’m very particular about beef bulgogi and I get disappointed easily when some restaurants get it wrong, but I was pleasantly surprised. Will come back for both meats and sandwiches.

Best butcher in Rochester, no doubt about it. The prepared food is utterly amazing, they sure do know how to cook some meat in this place! So fresh, so good. Check them out for sure!

I have eaten here twice and both times my wife and I split a dry aged steak, beef fat fried french fries and a bone marrow bone. They were excellent both times. Their bone marrow bones are the largest I have seen served in town, and the fries are great. Can’t wait to try some other things. We did buy one of each sausage, but that was a gift for a friend’s birthday, so I can not comment on how they were as I did not taste them.

Great staff and very knowledgable, their intellect matches the immaculate quality of their products! If you have the opportunity, talk to the butcher on duty. It’s refreshing to watch and listen to people who are passionate about their craft. The butcher is no exception to this. His meticulous attention to detail as he makes his cuts, to his pleasant and welcoming responses to questions. I believe everything, even what’s in the drink coolers is locally sourced! Big win for Rochester! If you go for lunch, step it up and get the fries as your side. You will not regret it.

If mass-produced meats makes you feel queasy, McCann’s local meats will quickly reaffirm that butchery, if done correctly, is a true art form. And this place is spectacular! Their local meat sourcing, whole animal philosophy makes this place a true gem. Not only are they supporting local farmers, they make even the last scraps irresistibly appealing. This place is like a meat museum where everything is curated perfectly to appeal to all your senses. Today I ate the worlds greatest burger Thanks to the genius and friendly butcher. Who graciously combined bacon with dry aged ground beef for us on the spot. This level of customization is literally unlike anywhere I’ve ever been. And the taste quality raised the bar so high I don’t think I can ever eat any other burger again. Do yourself a favor and support this art form and enjoy yourself a kimchi sausage they are also out of this world.

I really like McCann’s and I think the selection, concept and passion here are all commendable. The owner/head butcher is often around to answer questions or make suggestions. The selection is impressive and not badly priced for local antibiotic-free organic meat. If you’re a little queasy you may want to skip the awesome bird’s-eye view of the carving room, where half-cows and sheets of meat hang from the ceiling waiting to be carved. Lunchtime gets pretty busy on weekdays and can take a little while — get there between 11:30 and 12 to get your first pick and serve! The McCann’s burger is awesome. The empanadas are excellent and taste a bit like Cornish pasties. Yum! We’ve bought the IPA bangers and pork ribs and cooked them at home. The pork ribs had incredible flavor. A very hearty welcome to a great new local butcher shop!

This review is based solely on their prepared food. The pros to my experience today was the friendly and welcoming staff — guy at register need not apply. I follow McCann’s on FB and have been meaning to try these yummy looking specials I keep seeing. Today they were offering sweet and spicy chicken wings served with daikon and carrot sticks vs namasu. Per sign, they were«tossed in soy sauce, garlic, scallion, and sesame oil, topped with scallion and crushed peanuts». All these ingredients that would normally make a tasty sauce were not identifiable. It was not sweet, nor spicy… nor tasty. But they were soggy and drenched in this bland sauce. The wings were packed nicely with a pleasing presentation to hungry eyes. I also have to say that the sweet vinegar dressing for the daikon-carrot side was also a failure. It was all weak vinegar… Because my hungry eyes are bigger than the hoover dam, I added the Sloppy Joe to my bill. Now, the concept is great. This american classic was remixed with an over easy egg on top… YUM. From previous pictures this mound of awesome was served on a roll — mine came on Texas toast. This perplexed me since I wasn’t asked about a bread choice. By the time I brought it back to work(10 mins tops), the entire bottom slice was soggy, so I fork and knifed it. The meat sauce wasn’t special either… UGH. Pretty much everything on the prepared food roster was expensive. I’d pay for quality if the taste represented the price tag. Unfortunately, I can’t say it’s justified. They also sell 2oz containers of house made kimchi. But if the daikon-carrot execution was anything to go buy, I saved myself $ 2 by skipping it. I will probably go back to buy a couple of sausages to grill. Their price tags do not beat Costanza’s and I am afraid it won’t beat their taste either. They also have cottage pies for $ 10, which is Shepherd’d pie with mashed potato and cheese on top. This I’m curious about… but I will most likely not return for a long time.
