I usually find myself at Shogun when I’m in the mood for sushi, I don’t want to leave Irondequoit, and I know I just won’t be satisfied with Wegman’s sushi creations(good as they are, we all know it’s just not the same.) That being said, the sushi is to die for, and the décor inside is very warm, clean, and upscale feeling. You could easily have a romantic dinner here. However, that’s about the end of the positives. The outside décor is terrible– it makes the whole restaurant look run-down and I never know if they are closed or not until I get right up to the front doors– it’s that dead looking. The hibachi is no better or worse then any other hibachi restaurant. The chefs do the same tricks(light the vegetable volcano on fire, catch rice balls in your lap) that every other hibachi restaurant does. It’s nothing special or extraordinary, but good food none the less. I really believe that a re-model of the outside of the building would do wonders for Shogun Palace. They are the only place besides Wegmans to get sushi in Irondequoit, so why is it always so dead inside?

When I want Japanese during the workday, this is where I end up. Colleagues and I often end up here for a quick lunch out of the office. The service varies depending on the day, and as others have mentioned, a few of the staff speak limited English, but the host(?) is always available to help clarify any questions that I’ve had about the menu. The restaurant is beautiful, sleek and modern with hibachi tables in the back of the restaurant. They even have a koi pond upon entering. I’ve only ever sat at the small booths near the bar, and they are always clean and orderly. The lunch menu is plentiful with bento boxes, sushi(raw or cooked) lunch specials, etc. I usually order the two roll sushi lunch special, which you can choose from a selection of their rolls. On my most recent visit, I asked for one shrimp avocado roll and one tuna roll. We had a language issue when my dining companion asked the waitress whether the tuna came with rice on the outside or inside and she did not understand the question. I said it didn’t matter, so it was a non issue(it comes wrapped with the rice on the inside, FYI). We started the meal with miso soup — it’s good, but nothing to rave about. I’ve had better. We asked for edamame to start… yeah, it never came. There were maybe four other table in the restaurant, and we waited about 25 minutes for our dishes to come out(my two rolls and my friend’s bento box). While we waited for the dishes, my friend had to flag down the waitress and tell her to just forget the edamame(she looked flustered and caught off guard and then said«oh, ok. sorry». The sushi IS good — it’s fresh and very tasty. I tried some of the bento box, the fried tofu was good(especially the sauce drizzled on top; akin to a sweeter sesame sauce) as well as the seaweed salad. This could be a great lunch spot on East Ridge Road — but their staff need some better training(I can totally understand the language barrier, but the timing and forgetting dishes need to get fixed). I haven’t tried them for hibachi, but given some of the reviews of a certain chef, I’ll probably stick to lunch.

Buyer Beware! Restaurant charges $ 5.00 to share, which IS reasonable, however they do NOT provide the«shared» rice and vegetables. Additionally, when the Kid’s Shrimp is ordered, they charge you for an Adult Shrimp that is NOWHERE on the menu! Apparently, there is an 18% charge for gratuity for parties of six or more so you can refill your own drinks! This charge can NOT be found anywhere on the menu either! When you explain issues to the manager, it becomes YOUR problem!

Their food is always fresh. I prefer this hibachi over the others.

Service was good. I was only unhappy that the entrance of the restaurant has a median that was not clearly marked and because of the snow I drove over it bottoming out my car on it. There was a horrible crunching noise as the middle of the car landed on the concrete median. It was nicely camoflaged with the snow. If they have one of these, there should be a pole on it so it can be seen even with some snow.

Let me just say if you can get by the absolutely awful customer service, the sushi is actually quite tasty and the udon is good. I’ve been there twice, but we didn’t do hibachi either time. Both times I was there, I didn’t see my server in the first 20 minutes of being seated, well beyond the amount of time it took to review the 6 page menu and decide. And both times there were hardly any people, so it wasn’t like they were too busy. Both times I was served at a different time than the other person I was with, making the other person sit and wait for my food. The second time I ordered sushi and my husband didn’t so that’s somewhat understandable, but the first time I was there my father and I ordered the same thing but with a different protein. I wouldn’t have gone back after the first time, but I had already purchased a Groupon I couldn’t return. When it was time to pay, they made us sit for 20 minutes because their ipad was broken and it took a manager, who had left the building and was standing outside, to redeem the Groupon. After waiting for 15 minutes angry as she walked around the entire restaurant with my phone looking lost, we said we’d just pay full price, but she wouldn’t even let us do that. At that point we really just wanted to leave. But I guess at least we got served at all. After this experience I talked to a friend who told me she should have warned me because she once went in, sat for 20 minutes, requested a server, was stared at blankly and then just walked out.

The food wasn’t anything special. You can easily get comparable or better hibachi and sushi at other restaurants. It’s by far the most expensive restaurant in Irondequoit and I constantly feel underdressed every time I go there(which frankly is rare). The sushi is always fresh but usually requires a lengthy wait. If it was delicious and inventive and unique, I’d be more okay with it. Unfortunately, its not. The kitchen entrees are okay, sometimes too sweet for me but I can usually make it work. The biggest issue I have is with the service. All but one of the employees I encountered(4 total) barely spoke English. I can appreciate giving people jobs when its hard to find them. Our server didn’t understand what each different menu item came with and couldn’t really answer our questions because she couldn’t understand them, one woman who I guess was a busser didn’t speak English at all, the host did his best and understood us pretty well but couldn’t communicate to us as clearly and the last guy was a breath of fresh air because I could actually understand him. We would up getting 2 salads with out bento boxes, a napkin with gum inside of it, no soy sauce and a lot of confusion. Honestly, I usually only order out here because its close and the sushi is pretty good most of the time, albeit expensive.

First time there and had a little bit of everything. Sushi, hibachi and a cooked dish and it was excellent. Beautiful atmosphere and great service. Other reviewers were talking about the hibachi chef being to quiet, ours was quiet who cares! We had our friends to talk to. lol he was talented and put on quite a show. Will definitely go back and I highly recommend.

At first I was impressed by the ambiance. Very nice inside, however it was very cold. So cold that I wanted to sit at the table with my jacket on. People around us had actually done so. The service was horrible, it took our food literally, no exaggeration, 50 minutes to come out. I got Salmon and it was still raw. The waiter only came when she was bringing something to our table. I had to ask another waiter to get her to complain about my Salmon. When she came, she asked it I wanted it «thrown» back on the grill. I said No, I was already frustrated and annoyed by the fact that it took so long to come out in the first place. We told her we were ready for the check, she came back and told me she was going to take 20% off, but still charge us for the RAW Salmon that I did not eat. After complaining to the manager, he reluctantly took the Salmon off the bill. Although we were over charged for a bottle of wine, we didn’t feel like arguing, we just wanted to leave. It was a very disappointing experience, especially since we were celebrating a special occasion. It was not crowded by the way. This poor service seems to be their norm. I don’t know about the hibachi portion, it seems to have gotten good reviews. However, if you choose the dining option, beware!!!

I really, really loved this place! I came on Sunday with a couple girl friends. While I was waiting for them to show up I got a bottle of Sake at the bar. It was pretty good. Very dry, but I like that kind of thing. The prices were affordable. The bar tender was very nice and explained any questions I had about the drink menu. The restaurant is very clean. I like the layout. There’s a sushi bar and regular tables in the front and then you go around the corner into another room and there are the hibachi grills. Which I think is great because I know it can be pretty loud, especially when you have a whole group of people. So it keeps the noise away from the regular diners or those sitting at the bar and sushi bar. There is also a window between the regular dining area and the hibachi area which is pretty neat. People in the regular dining area can also watch the show. When we were ready to be seated it was very slow so we got a seat right away. The waitress was very nice and fast. Our cook was fantastic and funny! He was great with the tricks and everything he did. I got the scallops. They were cooked to perfection. a little crispy/browned outside and delicious. There was so much food! I ended up taking half of it home. There were also three different sauces and the cook was really nice and explained what each one was, what it tasted like and what it was best paired with. The prices were completely affordable. I think it was $ 22 for the scallop plate that I got. And there was SOMUCHFOOD! Totally worth every penny. Everything was delicious, everyone was funny, fast and kind. I will absolutely be coming back and recommending this place to others.

Came for some sushi and some beers. They also have hibachi if that’s what you’re in the mood for! The sushi was pretty delicious and inventive(although there was a LOT of eel on the menu, which I’m not a huge fan of). The portions were generous. We also had the wasabi pork sashimi which was delicious! Probably my favorite part of the meal.

5⁄5 or 2/5, depending who your hibachi chef is, this review is NOT for the dining area as I have not experienced that. I know I write a lot and I’m sorry, but this is one worth the read so you know just how different each visit can be. I’ve come here several times, with several parties, groups, etc. 3 times in fact. And I’ve noticed a trend in the reviews, every BAD experience was when the chef was Shogun(He acts like the owner but I’ve been told he isn’t, I’ll be going in to check soon). So when my friend told me with the highest enthusiasm that the 3rd time we went we were getting him, the«UNDISPUTED» best hibachi chef in New York, to be our chef, I was not only skeptical, I was slightly worried. But since our first 2 visits were good, I tried to put it aside and have faith. I’ll review the visits in order, and each one briefly until the final visit. The first two visits would have easily been 5 star reviews. Chi was my chef and he is amazing in every way. Great service, great performance, and the food was PERFECT. Third time is the lucky number, right? Heh… no… This time was another friends birthday, we went with him, his family, and several of our friends, we had the entire thing to ourselves, and my friend was SO excited to have Shogun himself be our chef… his excitement, as well as most others, didn’t last long however. The food was still reasonably good, not quite as good since he kept not paying attention to it being too busy ranting, but good enough so I won’t bother reviewing that at all. It was the choice of his conversation that rubbed everyone wrong. We also had my friends grandmother with us which made it even worse. He was constantly overriding our conversations with his own banter about how awful the other hibachi places are, how stupid past customers were, how awesome his jokes about people are, how he’s the best in the area(he told us this no less than 10 times during our meal, I wanted to start counting but couldn’t be assed), made jokes about each of us, and had a very rude sense of humor. I understand some people are amused by it, and, coming from being at a fire house all the time it usually doesn’t bother me, but there’s a time and a place for everything, and someone celebrating a birthday with their grandmother at the table isn’t that time. The mood was not at all what it was my first two visits, in fact, the most talkative of us were all quiet, unsure what to say to avoid being the next one ridiculed. When I mentioned I wanted desert he looked at me, and referring to what I can only imagine to be my weight replied with«of course you do»…Thanks bro, I needed that reminder. That trip… terrible, we barely even enjoyed our meals and the talk all night was about how disappointed we were and upset. I felt bad that my friend essentially paid a bunch of money to be humiliated and insulted in front of his family on his birthday. They went back without me for a 4th visit and ended up with Shogun again, and once again they were super disappointed. Lesson learned. Great restaurant, less than great chef(or whatever he is…) After all of that, I will say this, I DO recommend this place, highly, however, I recommend«Chi» as the chef… not Shogun.

I would rate this place a zero if it gave me the opportunity to do so. I drove 10 miles in the snow because I wanted hibachi for dinner. But because I was by myself they refused me service at the hibachi. This is a horrible establishment.

We randomly walked in on a Sunday afternoon and the place was understandably dead. We sat at the hibachi table and ordered… The mushroom soup and the green salad were both delicious! Then the cook came out. He said his name was Shogun; I don’t know if he is the owner or if it was just part of his shtick. He tried to be funny but he didn’t know how and just ended up being rude. First off, he started complaining about a customer he had last week and went on and on about her. On and on. Then he told me if she couldn’t handle it then she shouldn’t come in his restaurant. Then he said by the look on my face, maybe I couldn’t handle it and shouldn’t be there either. Then when I told him I didn’t want any rice he made fun of me. Repeatedly. A lot. He asked several times, Why? Why don’t you like my rice? I really didn’t want to talk to him about my reasons for not wanting rice and wished he would drop it. He gave me no warning that he was throwing a ball of rice at me wanting me to catch it in my mouth and it hit me in the face. He was not funny and, albeit accidentally, he insulted me and my guests more than once. Our vegetables, steak and fish were all cooked perfectly but sadly, were each immediately drenched in an array of overly sweet sugary sauces. I know everyone has different tastes and many people might like to be overly sauced with sugar but for us it just took away from what otherwise could have been a healthy meal. It was an expensive meal to be treated the way we were. But the proteins were cooked well. If not for the rude chef and the sugary sauces, the food could’ve earned this place 4 stars. But having grown up working in family owned and operated businesses, I am a stickler for customer service and Shogun failed.

We brought a full twelve top table in for Hibachi for our twin daughters’ sweet sixteen, and another table of three of us in the main dining room. While the quality of the food is very good, and the hibachi group seemed to have a great time, with the usual fanfare of spinning eggs, flying rice balls, and onion volcanoes… we languished in the main dining room for nearly 30 minutes before a server was sent over, and not until after we complained. Another exceedingly long wait for salads and then another torturous long fidgety wait for the first entrée in a dining room that felt cold even with a fleece on. It didn’t help that our waiter looked about 18 and was largely clueless and inexperienced. First entrée came out as an app, and then 10 minutes before the next entrée, then another 10 minutes until the last entrée came out. Inexcusably bad timing. Regarding the food, the spring rolls were crisp and tasty, wasabi shumai was spicy and moist with a spicy brown sauce of soy, ginger, sesame and red chils. Grilled shrimp was good, but rather skimpy for $ 18, and was incorrectly served without rice. Udon noodle soup was quite good, but difficult to get to the slippery noodles. This was more a splurge for the girls, but you would have thought that we would have been given VIP service considering we were spending several hundred dollars on the Hibachi table alone. A very disappointing experience for the parents, but an enjoyable party celebration for the girls. Hibachi is admittedly is where the money is being made, but it would behoove the owners to pay attention to what’s going on in the dining room. Probably the slowest and most clueless dining experience I’ve had in recent memory… too bad since the food is quite good. But I will likely take my money elsewhere for the next celebration.

I’ve personally visited over 20 Hibachi grills across the world, and this is definitely the best tasting food I’ve had at any of them! How? It’s all in the sauces! At most Hibachi restaurants, you get 2 tiny bowls of sauce, most often a mustard-based and a ginger-based sauce(white/yellow and red/brown respectively). At Shogun, we received 2 sauces to begin with, and then our chef made 2 additional sauces. All 4 were absolutely incredible! They’re custom-made here, so they don’t really have names, but the one that really stands out is the spicy sauce. I don’t know what’s in it, but I bought a quart of it to take home(a true bargain at only $ 10!), it was that good! Don’t be scared of the term«spicy», it’s not that spicy, but has a little kick. Just right and very tasty! Like most Hibachi places, it is a little loud with all the knife clanging and people applauding as the chefs perform some trick. And of course the grill fans are right there in front of you, and they are very loud. Our chef was very entertaining. He did all the typical Hibachi knife twirling, the onion volcano(but with a unique twist of pouring sauce inside, which then spouted out like lava. Never seen that before!). The food he cooked for us was very good, though no different from most good Hibachi places. But those sauces… Amazing! Really made the night! I’m not sure if the sauces are his personal creation or standard at the restaurant, but they were all incredible. I’ll be stopping in every so often to buy more to take home. I highly recommend this place!
