I am proud to live in a city where funky niche enterprises like this can happen. Smugtown Mushrooms’ mission is to make food, medicine and mushroom cultures available to everyone. On a visit to the Public Market, I happened to get drawn in by a garage sale out on the sidewalk in front. When I stepped inside, I found tea tastings, zines, and mycological culture aplenty. This is also an excellent place to find ramp leeks, in their season. The best part was a used book section that felt like visiting the shelves of a really cool aunt. Lots of stuff on empowerment, folk medicine, and earthy humor. This is a community-oriented space, so the customer-driven focus you might find in corporate retail doesn’t really apply here. Relax, try the tea, and soak in the culture.
