Being an Indian, I am very fond of Indian food, perhaps one of the major reasons is that it reminds me of home. Consequently we have visited several Indian restaurants over the years and it is a good thing that Rochester has a good number of places that serve good quality Indian good. Irondequoit however lacked an Indian restaurant to call its own till Taj Mahal came along, it’s name is now India house but I’m glad to say that the name change hasn’t resulted in a change of the taste and quality of food. We have ordered take out from this place on several occasions and the food has never be disappointing. The dishes taste great and the salt and spice content is often just right. The first thing that strikes you is the large number of dishes on their menu, we have tried a wide variety of things both on the vegetarian and non-vegetarian sides, such as the malai kofta, gucchi saag, shahi korma, lamb pakora, beef and chicken vindaloo and aloo gobi. The paneer and vegetable jalfrezi however weren’t as good as the other dishes. The second best thing about this place is their speed, I am always amazed by how they manage to get everything ready in the blink of an eye and that too with such good tastes. We haven’t yet had the opportunity to dine in and try out their lunch buffet, but I guess I can safely say that it is probably pretty good. Over the past few months they have made some changes to the interiors to spruce up the place and I’m hoping India house sticks around for a long long time.

So much for delicious Indian food in Irondequoit! After being open for a couple of months, Taj Mahal closed for several days and reopened as India House. I gather that this India House is the same India House on Clinton, as this Irondequoit restaurant had a «Best of 2014» sign on the door. Given that this is a new location, I call foul on the«Best of 2014.» Gone are the delicious spicy foods and here are the butter chicken, flavorless aloo ghobi, and other fare typical of the buffet at the location on Clinton. The food is edible, but far less interesting than what Taj Mahal was offering. I am not sure why the restaurant was sold or changed hands; perhaps the owners had to leave the area. However, the new India House in Irondequoit is a real disappointment. Too bad they couldn’t hire the old cook from Taj Mahal(though, I imagine the old cook was probably the owner or owner’s mother!) Location and food are forgettable.

Food was great. So nice to have an Indian restaurant in Irondequoit! Gave us free papadam to start. Okra side dish(also free) was excellent. The masala tea(sweetened, hot) was like other Indian restaurants’ chai tea, but not like Starbucks(which I liked). I hope this place sticks around!

So glad to finally have an Indian restaurant in my area! And it is excellent! Me and my husband have had the chicken makhani, bharta, a shredded paneer dish I can’t remember the name of, and both regular and garlic naan there… all were very very tasty! The staff is also very attentive and polite… just super nice!

Excellent service and food. I’ve never had Indian before but the staff was very helpful. Would certainly come again.
