Writers & Books

First time here. Lots of different kinds of writing classes. Financial aid is available. They seem to hold lots of different events.
Enrolled my homeschoolers in a writing class but I’m considering taking one. They also have summer courses and camps available.

Writers & Books is a gem in the Neighborhood of the Arts. Billing itself as a «community literary center,» it offers a myriad of classes in writing and group reading for people of all ages, including children. The teachers are often community-​based professors or published writers. Every class I’ve taken there has been worthwhile and fulfilling. Poetry, comedy, screen-​writing, magazine writing, creative non-​fiction, fiction — they have it all. It’s also very flexible in terms of what you can sign up for: they have classes that can be bought in blocks, like 6 – 8 weeks, but they also have single-​day workshops if you’re unable to make such a commitment. In addition to writing classes, they have reading classes as well — this winter they offered workshops on the short stories of Flannery O’Connor (love her!), writings from the Civil War Campaign, and a class called «Reading Like a Writer.»
What are these classes like? They vary in terms of size, but they’re sure to be filled with very interesting and very talented people. Writers and Books sprouted some of my most cherished friendships that led to writing groups outside of the center. I was an English major in college but lost that side of myself for several years before Writers & Books reigned me back in and helped me to connect with like-​minded people again. The atmosphere is non-​judgmental but at the same time critical. There is usually one prompt or assignment per week and each class is spent discussing a particular craft detail and then sharing work and critiques.
If you’ve got a literary or creative side, I’d highly recommend checking out the course catalog and seeing if Writers & Books has a class that tickles your fancy.
