Wong Wong Chinese Restaurant

Great food, fair price!!. It’s not in a great area but I like to have hubs pick it up on his way home so really it’s a non issue… The wong wongs Crown is as great family meal and I LOVE crab Rangoon! Trying a new dish tonight so… update to follow

Let be Frank! I am a Chinese food lover! this location has some of the best combination fried rice I have ever tasted! I have not tasted anything else yet… I will go tomorrow during their lunch special to test out some other items.

Wong Wong is in a really crappy strip mall next to the BP station at the corner of Central Avenue and Auburn Street in Rockford. Don’t let that fool you. Even though they only take cash and they do have a bulletproof glass, this is the best Chinese restaurant in Rockford! Don’t let that punk student who thinks he knows everything fool you into missing a great opportunity! What could a 17-​year-​old kid know? The only drawback I see is that they don’t have an online menu so that you could order ahead and then pick up. It’s worth going in and ordering they’re very quick with bringing your food out. They do have a small dining room, it’s nothing to look at, but they know that carry out is where the real business is. Go ahead and give them a try, I think you’ll really like them as much as I do.

While I absolutely hate the location of this restaurant seeing as I try to avoid that area of town at all costs I do suck it up for Wong Wongs. It is the best Chinese in the area and they give you a lot of food for not a bad price. The egg rolls are some of the best I have had. I just wish they’d open another in the Roscoe — Machesney Park area

Wow, what a joke.
I finally made the trip to the west side for Wong Wong for two reasons: 1) I was reviewing the place for my final essay about Rockford-​area Asian restaurants I was in the middle of writing, and 2) my Rockford friends and coworkers swore Wong Wong was the absolute best Chinese food they’ve ever had. So I gave the place a shot. Bear in mind, I’m an Asian Chicagoan, born and raised, so my idea of awesome Chinese are the various offerings around Archer and Wentworth – Chicago’s Chinatown.
Wong Wong is located in your typical hood strip mall – I don’t recall what else flanked it, maybe a laundromat or liquor store or cash loan place or, as the previous reviewer mentioned, a weave shop. Anyways, when you get inside to place your order (cash only), the zero-​personality cashier is behind a (I assume) bulletproof glass partition. Really?
We get our food and sit down at the folding tables, which at least had picnic table cloths over them. The rest of the drab interior was no better – the place was randomly decorated with cheap mass-​produced Oriental junk you buy for $ 2 at any Asian market. The food, highly-​touted as among Rockford’s best, was not that good at all. I’ll give it to Wong Wong that the portions are cheap and large. But who wants to pay for a large portion of crappy food? I ordered the Mongolian beef, which was mostly vegetables and gravy. The rice and egg roll that accompanied it were average, but you can’t really mess those up.
Rockford, for all its shortcomings, does have some great restaurants and hidden gems. But Wong Wong is not one of them. You’d think a restaurant that requires a window that can take small arms fire to serve food so good that it’s prone to armed robbery, but the only thing getting robbed is your stomach and your time. I’ll go to Happy Wok before I ever come back to Wong Wong, and that’s saying a lot.

I loved Wong Wong’s. When I went to high school, this place is where I sometimes grabbed dinner on my merrily way home. The Singapore noodle and their Egg Foo Yong are quite good. They’re about the only place in Rockford with my fave Chow Fun noodles.
And it’s right by a place to grab a acouple weaves for yo head! 2 in 1 stop!
