Love this place. Great food all around, great staff, very clean and the place looks really nice. They make a great spider roll. My only complaint is on a very busy night service is slow. Other than that I have not had a bad experience. I eat here all the time and recommend it to anyone who loves good Japanese food. The Chinese food is also great.

Very well priced. Tons of food. Great quality and orientation. I am super picky, but I really enjoyed myself. Waitress was very nice and didn’t freak out when my son made a mess. Will visit again or take to go without a doubt.

So excited that Rosendale now has an excellent Japanese restaurant! We went on their opening day which could be scary but it wasn’t. Yes, they were a little disorganized and slow but hey, it was their first day. We didn’t mind waiting because when the food arrived we were more than pleased. We had 4 rolls and all 4 were terrific. Can’t wait to work my way through the menu.

Not great. I got the sashimi deluxe and 4 of the pieces are imitation crab. The rest of the pieces are fresh out of the freezer and so cold, they taste like ice with a hint of fish. The agedashi tofu comes served on top of a white mayo-like sauce which defeats the purpose of the simple dish. The décor is nice and the service is friendly, but the food didn’t live up to expectations. I’m disappointed because was hoping to find good sushi/sashimi near where I live.

I’ve passed by this restaurant several times in my travels from Kingston to New Paltz and finally decided to stop in for dinner with my husband. We were pleasantly surprised with the ambience given that it’s location is in a strip mall. The staff were friendly, the service overall attentive. We started off with the Japanese dim sum app, which were well cooked and quite tasty. The sushi roll selection was extensive so we opted for a couple of traditional rolls along with a few more avant garde options. The presentation was lovely, everything tasted fresh. Nice meal all around!

It USED to be great. I’m not sure what happened, but the past two times I’ve gone(out of 5) once got really sick from the teriyaki chicken roll, and last time(yesterday) not only was the service terrible, but my hot tea was luke warm on all 4 refills even after politely informing them and asking for it to be hot. Then, my chicken Raman was barely warm and smelled rancid. Couldn’t even eat it and when i mentioned it, again politely, nothing was done, nor was it taken off the bill. The black pearl roll which is normally a favorite, was mushy and tasted off. Again, nothing done about it. Then, when requesting the check i needed change and sat waiting for nearly 15 minutes before being checked on. Asked specifically for change, and when i was handed back the folio, my 20 was still in it. Wtf… Not wanting to be a total jerk and just leaving a dollar and change for tip, i went up to the register and asked for change and when handing the 20, she pocketed it, said thank you, and started to walk away. I stopped her and said no, that i needed change and then she proceeds to not only answer the phone and continue to ignore me, but look at me like she had no idea why i was standing there. After 5 minutes, and a pleasant reminder, she asks someone to come make me change. I honestly didn’t even want to tip at that point but I’m not a jerk. Instead, i still gave her 18−20% and just will never be going back again. Such a shame because i really enjoyed this place when it first opened and thought it would get even better, not worse…

Came here for lunch and though I enjoyed some of it, here’s an explanation for my rating: Location and ambiance was very pleasant. The service was friendly and enjoyable as well. Our meal started with soup. I got the onion soup and my wife got the customary miso. I would describe them as msg water. However, this is typical of some Asian restaurants so we didn’t mind too much. The also-customary salad with ginger carrot dressing was nice with romaine lettuce. Then my bento box came. The fried gyoza and egg rolls were small but tasty(can’t go wrong with fried rolls). The California roll pieces were also okay. The fried rice also tasted very fresh. Now we get to the teriyaki chicken. It apparently was pre-cooked, then reheated with the teriyaki sauce on it. Had none of the tender smokey flavor that the most basic teriyaki has. It was hard, overcooked and had a stale flavor. In addition, the sauce was flavorless– salt, sugar, maybe food coloring, and that’s about it. My wife enjoyed her sushi lunch. However the fish lacked the firmness and sheen that fresh fish has. It was mostly dull and lifeless. For authentic asian food, I much much prefer the place in New Paltz that starts with an H and rhymes with okkaido, especially for sushi(though they don’t seem to serve lunch). In summary, this restaurant has good ambiance, good service, is clean, but the freshness and quality of food is lacking. I hope it improves and becomes successful.

I don’t have a single complaint about this wonderful Rosendale addition. Many Asian restaurants are sparsely decorated and suited mainly for takeout. And the takeout ends up being mediocre. Well Matsu exceeds my expectations in both categories. Beautiful restaurant, excellent takeout with surprises like soup and fried rice, and to top it off the food is amazing. I moved to Rosendale from NYC and my bar is high for Asian food! Matsu is a wonderful restaurant, offering delicious food in a nice atmosphere. Fun creative sushi rolls on top of the standards are prepared by two sushi chefs, and they are yummy! The best Asian in the area.

Matsu is an oasis in a desert of Hudson Valley sushi restaurants. The quality and presentation of the fish is outstanding. The rice doesn’t have that gummy texture you find in so many places. Definitely New York City caliber food, only with larger portions. Definitely worth the extra travel from New Paltz, where I’ve found the sushi is pretty mediocre. Tuna tataki and spider roll were pretty special.

Came here yesterday with a friend for lunch. We got there just as it opened so we were the only customers. The staff was polite, our lunch specials(maki combo for me, and bento box for my friend) arrived quickly. The views of the creek are amazing. It’s a beautiful restaurant and I hope to go back soon.

The food was good but it wasn’t excellent for the way it was priced. They need to come down on their prices.

We are thrilled to have this gem open here in Rosendale. Love the food and the staff is super kind and helpful. Yes, they are just opening and finding their groove but that is ok with me. We eat here at least once a week. As to the Unilocaler who wrote it is a insult to Japanese Cuisine… I highly disagree. I lived in Japan for many years and it is better. I’m sorry they didn’t build a volcano of onions, throw a shrimp in your mouth, or parade around the restaurant with a gong singing happy birthday to you.

The young lady who’s a bit mousier was our waitress today(did not catch her name.) took forever to take our order, took forever to get our food and it did not all come out at the same time. Right now we’re waiting on our check as she is just wandering around, checking on her phone and kind of ignoring us. Not cool.

I ordered chirashi — sashimi over rice with seaweed salad. The raw fish was of high quality. Also ordered takoyaki and gyoza, both good and reasonably priced. I’m excited to go back when they have their full bar. Staff also very polite and the space is nicely done. Happy that there’s another option in town — definitely one of the nicest spots in Rosendale now.

Thanks but no thanks. Terrible attempt at «Japanese Cuisine». It might even be fair to say, an insult. Extremely«american». crunchy this crunchy that. spicy sauce, special sauces all over everything. they have«sushi pizza», really? It looked unappitizing, some sort of fried tempura dough with a bunch of crunchy flakes and sauces all over. there might have been some fish too. Look. if you like that kind of stuff then you’ll love this place. If you like real authentic cuisine then I’d suggest going elsewhere.

I’ve taken a hiatus of sorts from Unilocal but felt the need to come back after last nights experience at a much anticipated opening of this new Sushi/Ramen restaurant. My 2 stars should be no reflection on the quality of food. Honestly, me & the soon to be Mrs have been searching far & wide for a good sushi place since moving out of the city over a year ago and by far this is the best quality fish we’ve had. We were disappointed that the Ramen chef was not there yet nor had they received their liquor license, but totally understandable not going to get on them about that. So here then lies the reason for my 2 star review. There were 4 of us, showed up at 7:30, were seated in 15 minutes, table was dirty, staff were a bit scattered,(they’ve only been opened a few days), but there were staff also just chilling out and chatting with each other. We ordered 4 hand spicy tuna maki rolls to start, $ 7 each is the most expensive we’ve seen up here. They were delicious, but loose the avocado and charge a dollar less. They came all laid out on one platter, before napkins, chopsticks, plates, before anything except water was on the table. What killed me was a table that just set down behind us asked what we ordered and then asked for the same; there’s came served in a totally different set up, more like ice cream cones in an upright holder. You have to keep it consistent especially if you’re going to walk by our table and serve it to the customers right next to us. I’m being a little picky and it really isn’t that bad, but our next serving, the Sushi pizza,(which by the way, amazing) came out about 30 minutes later. We ordered a Chirashi dish, a boat, and an additional roll. The Chirashi came out next, very fresh and a good choice of fish. We were hungry and now it was almost 50 minutes and no sign of our boat, one did pass us by, to the table that ordered the hand rolls and who set down after us! We waited over an entire hour for the boat and our Poisidan roll! Not once did the owner or manager come over to our table to apologize or offer us a complimentary app while we were waiting nor, (and this is where it hurts), was there anything taken off or discounted from our bill! Will I be back… most definitely, the food is delicious, I’m sure they’ll get their act together soon, but for now they need to know that they need help, a 4 top at 8PM on a Friday night should not have wait over an hour for their food, Sushi isn’t a 4 course meal. All in all our dinner was 2 hours, too long for anything higher then 2 stars. Step it up Matsu we’re counting on you!

We found this restaurant to be excellent and we think that you will too. Just look at the pictures we posted. We ordered a bunch of food. It was all good. We ordered sushi. It was good. It doesn’t get much better than this! Woohoo! As good as it gets!
